We could just go ahead and make our own separate lists of things we love versus things we absolutely despise.

swiftmaker12 said:Besides, today's Formula 1 fans don't really care about the drivers anymore; they’re mostly just pulling for the teams—basically just huge corporations—so it's just a totally natural part of how the whole Formula 1 business evolves...

That's an interesting way to look at it.
It would be pretty cool to see what everyone else thinks on this one.
Are we actually rooting for the driver or the squad?
Thinking back from the 70s through to the 80s, the 90s, and so on...🍿

I’m not out here making any grand predictions (not that Joe would want me to), because let’s be real, those rules and all that high-and-mighty nonsense are being written and enforced by everyone knows.
Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if that's exactly how Formula 1 ends up operating one day.
As for the answer to that little anecdote: I'm all for it in the way it's actually been applied (if you know what I mean) 😉
. But this current situation? It's honestly nauseating—I can't stand it one bit. 🤮

I mean, what’s actually the better play here: just letting the halo snap off and taking someone's head clean off, or actually coming up with a way to cool down the cockpit—assuming we can even make that work? There's plenty of tech out there today if you know where to look, though obviously, making it happen is going to be a massive headache. If we can pull off something similar in Endurance, then why the hell can't we do it here?

Just toss them into a clear bubble and call it a day. 🙂

When I screw up, I go all in and own the embarrassment.
Can we run a public poll or something? 🤔
Just so this whole disaster is laid out plain and simple.
Alright, let's have our one surviving expert, excuse me, Goofy, give us the word from Melbourne on whether that 1987 Ferrari actually had championship potential.
Look, I’ll admit I wasn't at the races live back in '87, but I lived and breathed it. If you ask me about 2010, people can claim I have no clue, but for 1987... man, oh man...
Basically, just like that guy who spends his life editing the American version of Wikipedia (yeah, yeah, I hear the sarcasm coming now), the consensus on 1987 is pretty much this:
Essentially, the single-seater proved itself to be competitive; if you set aside the eighth-place finish in Brazil and the fifteenth in Spain (both with Alboreto), the drivers never finished any lower than fourth. However, the number of retirements caused by mechanical failures actually outweighed the number of completed Grand Prix, leading to massive point losses due to sheer inconsistency and unreliability .
And honestly, if you want to fight me on it, I haven't seen a single driver win a championship while having more DNFs than actual finishes.
Like I already said, since the absolute best of the best was driving that Ferrari that year—with Gerhard Berger failing to finish 9 out of 16 races and Alboreto missing 10 out of 16—there is no way they take the title.
How?

Ret 28 Gerhard Berger Ferrari 5 Turbo Ret 28
Ret 28 Gerhard Berger Ferrari 62 Engine Ret 28

How?

And despite grabbing two wins in 1987 (which, obviously, weren't delivered by Michelle), they ended up being ranked as the 13th worst Ferrari season ever, sitting just behind that total train wreck of a year in 2014:

And again, I didn't write that part myself.

Alright, fine, I'll take the L, no big deal, I own it.

But seriously, saying someone could have clinched the title in a Ferrari back in '87? What kind of logic is that?
A TOTAL EMBARRASSMENT?
Was the '87 Ferrari actually a championship-caliber machine ready to dominate?

Ugh... here we go again OFF, let's just stop or take this somewhere else.
That was ages ago, so I might be fuzzy on some of the specifics.
Long story short: both Rubens Barrichello and Gerhard Berger were classic drivers in their prime who happened to be number two drivers at the same time, so they had the "bad luck" of basically being water boys for the lead driver. And honestly, it’s still the same way today. You just can't become a champion when you're driving alongside someone like Ayrton Senna or Michael Schumacher.
Plus, look at Berger—he actually spent two years as the lead driver at Ferrari alongside Gerhard Alboreto, back when that guy (I think he means Fercan) was barely dragging the car to the finish line every other race.
Take 1987 for example, which was 9 retirements, while Alboreto 10. What does that tell you about the car?
Even if some literal Martian—a mix of the absolute best of the best—had been driving that Ferrari back then, they would NEVER have been a Formula 1 champion. Period. The legendary lead drivers like Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell, or Nelson Piquet only had maybe 2, 3, or 4 retirements.
It was pretty much the same deal in 1988.
And don't even get me started on 1989, where there were 12 DNFs.
Back then, Senna would just go out, gather data, and watch his own back. That’s really all there is to it.

Nico Rosberg is a title contender about as much as Rubens Barrichello was during his Ferrari days or Gerhard Berger was at McLaren.

Don't you dare put Rubens Barrichello and Gerhard Berger in the same sentence. I don't care if your logic holds up. 😉

stormybadger8 said:That would imply the Bear is at least a full second faster than Ferrari, assuming Rosberg was actually pushing to the limit... which I seriously doubt is even remotely the case.

All things considered, this season is looking way worse than last year when it comes to how much the Bear is dominating everything...
And honestly, Ferrari is going to be busy fighting off AlphaTauri and Williams rather than actually chasing down Mercedes...

If anything, Red Bull might have a shot if they can actually pull something clever out of their sleeve with that "Tag" engine...
But beyond that, there's just no way, not even in some crazy alternate reality.

Look, Seb is happy with it, and he clearly knows what he's talking about:

Besides everything else...
I can't believe people are actually still debating whether the Honda power unit is going to be a total disaster or if they've actually figured things out. Looking at the data from the testing sessions, the power unit in the back of Jenson Button and Carlos Sainz's cars is basically just a Mark I 2016 engine that’s had a few quick fixes thrown at it to cover the gaps they realized they had over the winter. It’s not some revolutionary breakthrough; it’s more like a band-aid on a bullet wound. Everyone is acting like there's some massive leap forward, but let's be real—they're just trying to survive until next year when the real work starts. If you think they've solved their reliability issues overnight, you aren't paying attention to how these things actually work. It's the same old story with McHonda: promising big things in the press releases while the actual hardware is just catching up to where it should have been months ago. We'll see if this holds up once they hit the track in Melbourne, but right now, it looks like they're just spinning their wheels.
Sebastian Vettel isn't holding back: "The tech inside these F1 cars is just getting way too complicated."
