Omicron variant in Coronavirus ·
Why should we be losing sleep over infection numbers if only a tiny fraction actually end up in the hospital? 🤔
And honestly, looking at the data right now, it’s tracking lower than Delta did.

So, apparently, if you're vaccinated over here and you've been in close contact with someone carrying Omicron, you're stuck in quarantine for 14 days 🤦

It’ll be interesting to see how that plays out, though honestly, nobody is actually tracking contacts anyway

It’ll just be a mess if people start freaking out over some mild variant numbers. At the end of the day, what actually matters is how things are moving—specifically, the count of new positive tests.

Since the pandemic started, nothing like this has actually helped stop the spread—maybe just slowed it down a bit. Honestly, I'm pretty sure Omicron has been making its rounds through Europe for quite some time now. It might not be everywhere yet, but it's there.

So, at this point, this whole 🤷

Everyone keeps harping on about how much more contagious it is or how fast it spreads. But honestly, does anyone actually care about what kind of illness it causes?
If the R value hits 5 but all it does is give people a runny nose and a cough—basically just a bad cold that keeps people out of the ER because they're staying home instead—then I don't see why there needs to be this massive panic or freakout.

Honestly, I wouldn't send my other kid anywhere either until I see those PCR results myself.

Honestly, 24 hours just feels a little too short for me 🤷
Religion classes in school - Megathread in Students & Teens ·
I see all these comments online from parents saying their kids don't attend religion classes anymore. I honestly assumed it was the same way at my kid's school.
With my little one in first grade, everyone goes to religion class.

There are 220 students across the first through fourth grades in this entire shift, and according to the school records, not even 10 skip the religious studies.

I figured it had become a massive trend everywhere to just opt out, so seeing this really caught me off guard. Maybe it’s just different depending on which part of the country you're in...

My first grader mentioned her teacher uses E-sphere. Does that mean we can log in at home to grab some materials too?
Would you get your kids vaccinated against COVID? in Coronavirus ·
Can I answer for her?

All the adults got the shot, but I’m drawing the line at my kids.
We didn't get vaccinated just to stay infection-free—I'm realistic enough to know we'll all end up catching COVID sooner or later. For me, it was about avoiding the heavy stuff and death. My parents are older and have health issues, so they were especially careful to get vaccinated to lower their risk of a fatal outcome. It was also about lowering the chance that I'd pass it on to them while trying to protect myself.

From what I can see, kids aren't seeing high death rates. I haven't heard anything about massive numbers of severe complications among them, so I don't think they need the vaccine right now.

So, I'm not one of those people claiming vaccination prevents you from getting infected. We're protecting ourselves against worse outcomes.

And no, I don't consider mRNA to be gene therapy. Besides, there are other types of vaccines out there besides mRNA.

When it comes to the flu, I’m getting my shot for the third year in a row.
As for the WHO vaccine, those guys can wait until there’s actual proof it won't leave people with long-term issues and that it actually does its job properly.

I think there were about 30,000 adults in the group

So yeah, there is zero chance this tiny sample size means anything at all

Is it just me, or does a test group of maybe 2,000 kids between the ages of 5 and 12 feel way too small to draw any real conclusions from?

Every few months, scientists drop some new "groundbreaking" update on COVID, constantly shifting their stance because they aren't even sure what they're doing half the time. Honestly? I’m not vaccinating my kids.

Everything changed so much in the last 18 months. Who knows what kind of nonsense we'll be hearing about in the next 18.

I reached out to our local epidemiologists to see where they stand on this. Their take? If kids are separated from anyone currently in isolation, then yeah, they’re cleared to head back to school or daycare.

I also sent an inquiry over to Medicare, but I'm still waiting to hear back from them.
Quarantine Life in Coronavirus ·
The way things work here, if you have a sibling in isolation, they aren't even allowed in school or daycare.
Quarantine Life in Coronavirus ·
Nah, unless they start showing symptoms

So, I just sent an email directly to the epidemiologist over at the local health clinic. Now we wait and see what happens.

that rule applies to people who are actually infected, rather than those who are just quarantining.

So I guess my only option is to argue with some CDC expert.
Or just tell them kids aren't hanging out anymore and send my son to school anyway.
