What do you guys think of this guy? in Martial Arts & Combat Sports ·

Is anyone actually hating on him?
I’d appreciate some actual detail on those theories of yours—they're too wordy for me to wrap my head around...
What does your Chinese contact think about him and his teacher?

What’s your take on these:

www.ymaa.com

www.taijiworld.com

Of course people are hating on him.

All those complicated theories you're talking about basically boil down to coordination and just putting in the work... 😬

My Chinese contact probably doesn't think much of him. But he should respect the teacher—the guy was a straight-up legend back in the day.

Got nothing to say about Lacy.

I dig the YMAA books because they gathered all the classic texts and put them in one spot—original Chinese, English translation, and interpretation. No clue about the training quality though.

Erle Montaigue can be a handful, and his Old Yang style is pretty controversial. He even put out one of those weird books (like dim mak Antigrappling or whatever it was called).

What else haven't you found out about Painter?

You really picked the perfect example with BKF 🙂

Watched videos of him and his main instructor—I’ve actually got some of his books. You can learn a ton from him, and those tricks he’s picked up over 40 years of training are insane (like, dodging a kidney shot... okay, I'm not even kidding)

People say he’s a legit fighter—even the guys who usually talk trash about him have to admit that part.

His books have some pretty solid theories on neuromuscular connection and kinesiological analysis of internal martial arts.

Now if you could just dig up John Painter and ask him about the guy...

So he’s actually the one claiming you don't need a heavy bag if you've just got a wall to hit? 😁

Nah, that's not what I meant. A brace alone doesn't make you a ninja.

look, if he had a massive titanium prosthetic instead of that missing leg, he'd learn some respect real quick...😬

Should we legally ban ruggedfalcon2 from using computers and trolling the forums just to help him reintegrate into society? Because once someone hits 8,000 posts, there's no coming back...

Hey crew—just got back from vacation 👍

Yo man! 👍

As for ruggedfalcon2, though... he's unstoppable. Like a force of nature. 😬

wanderingridge said:I think it was actually the other way around—that those Sanda fighters were just winning because of all the takedowns, though I'm not totally sure

Not really. Those guys started actually winning once they picked up Muay Thai training. Period.

Basically, Sanda is the Chinese take on MMA—you've got the striking from kickboxing mixed with wrestling (I think they only score the takedowns and skip the ground game, but I'd have to double-check that...).

Sanda is a hybrid—looks like boxing handwork, karate and TKD footwork, plus takedowns from shuai jiao (kind of like Chinese judo but without the ground fighting). Officially, they claim the top masters back in the '60s blended the best Kung Fu techniques to create Sanda... though you don't really see that happening. Per the rules, alongside standard kickboxing (low kicks, I guess), they allow elbows, arm locks, and throws. You can clinch, but only for a split second.

In a loose translation, Sanda means free fighting.

Anyway, Sanda fighters haven't exactly made a name for themselves against Muay Thai guys. Plus, they're usually absolute trash on the ground—at least based on the few videos I've watched...

Probably Sanda. It'll feel a lot like kickboxing to you...

It just goes to show what happens when you get too specialized in one specific style...🙂

Nah, he actually trains the cops—works for the local precinct and all that...

so... as far as I know, Schwarzenegger isn't even part of the WBC, he's IBF. He’s wearing a hakama in that photo because he's doing a kenjutsu demo—that's just what you wear for it... He actually grabbed that blue kimono from Tom Kokic since Kokic started rocking the blue ones and Schwarzenegger thought it looked cool 😁 And nobody was even tearing him apart on that thread—most of the replies were just people bickering about how "BJJ is the absolute best!" Sherdog is a garbage forum.

and if Schwarzenegger's red Chevy Silverado bothers you so much, just go talk to the guy and be civil about it.

It's like that old Bruce Lee movie... some guy loses his hand and ends up using an iron one instead.
