What should I try, guys? Not sure where to start... 🙂 Yeah, fair enough. It's tough to really talk about conditioning when you're doing anaerobic training... 😁

I'm looking into starting some martial arts, and this one gym keeps popping up for me—the location is perfect, the schedule works, and the price is actually decent. But when I started digging around to see what people thought, I kept seeing people call it a "cult." I’m definitely not trying to join a cult, so I’m curious... why do they have that reputation? I’d hate to pass up a great gym if these rumors are just total lies...
Daniel Garcia said:Nah, you got it wrong—you’re mixing up modern Japanese styles with traditional JJ. On the traditional stuff, they stick strictly to techniques from that era and the philosophy behind them, whereas modern is all about being sports-oriented.
Like I said, different sports require totally different kinds of conditioning. An MMA fighter or a grappler would probably drop dead during a heavy striking session, and vice versa.
I was thinking about that JJ taught by Hrvoje Znaor over in Split, but whatever... 😁 I heard their training sessions are absolutely brutal...
Come on, explain why a wrestler would die in a striking drill. It sounds backwards to me, since wrestlers pull those crazy heavy workouts...

It doesn't necessarily have to be the sole purpose, but I want the discipline that pushes cardiovascular limits the most. I’d lean toward Eastern disciplines—not boxing or anything like that—but I'm open to suggestions. What are you all recommending?
Also, is starting at 19 too late? I have no intention of going pro; I just want something to prepare me for my service in the military.
Endurance in terms of cardio, or endurance in terms of toughness (taking hits, throws, grappling...)?
Either way, BJJ would be great for that, or traditional Jiu-Jitsu, maybe wrestling too... basically any grappling style...
Taylor Evans2 said:Hey there! I'm looking to get into some kind of martial art, just for fun and fitness. I want something that isn't really about throwing punches or taking hits, though. I'm more interested in stuff focused on defense, self-protection, blocking, and just dodging strikes... so what would you guys recommend? I was thinking maybe Aikido?...
JJ, BJJ, Judo, Krav Maga, Systema, or even shooting... 😎 there's plenty to choose from... 😁
I saw those prices, I was just tripping over that "from Saturday" part. Clearly, arriving on Saturday or staying through Monday/Tuesday costs the same... 😢 But hey, it's not even that bad... 😁
how much would a ticket run if I showed up, say, on Saturday at 5 PM and stayed until Sunday at 4 AM? does that count as a 2-day pass or... how does it work? 😁
The UFC is more of a massive organization than anything else, so calling it a "UFC club" doesn't really land right... 😁 In the States, the UFC is basically what you linked me to, even if that specific name sounds kind of hilarious to me—having that many different sports all under one roof... 🤷
I'm guessing you mean an MMA gym, definitely not some "UFC club"... 😁
Whether BJJ or wrestling works for a "one vs. many" situation without using dirty tricks really depends on if we're talking about a street fight or a staged thing at a gym... though honestly, saying a street fight is "clean" is kind of a joke... 😁 Since you're big on Krav Maga, maybe just go train that since you brought it up as an example... If you want one-on-one fighting under UFC rules, BJJ might be your best bet...
But looking at your posts, I can't tell what you're actually after... Just looking for a hobby, wanting to learn self-defense, or do you just love sparring and martial arts in general...?
velvetseal14 said:Hey, if you had to pick just two from this list, which ones would they be?
Muay Thai, kickboxing, judo, BJJ
Give me the reasons why or why not...
Been looking into all of them, and I'd probably go Muay Thai and BJJ... Just for my own goals, though. They cover both standing and ground work perfectly... what about you?
slydriver52 said:I told the guy he shouldn't get lost in the supplement jungle. Why waste cash on junk filled with filler when you can grab the good stuff for the same price?
With those three, it doesn't matter what he picks. No real difference in results, just the price tag...
slydriver52 said:Don't just grab whatever. Seriously, please don't give out advice like that... If you've got Gold Standard from Optimum Nutrition or some EAS whey, stick with those. If you're watching your wallet, go with Twinlab. You could also try Olimp; they mix really well and probably have the least artificial sweeteners since it tastes kind of bland... which is usually a sign of good quality. Cytosport is huge here in the States—their Muscle Milk is everywhere, though that's not pure whey. They do have pure stuff, but I wouldn't bother because it's overpriced. Just like EAS, Cytosport carries that NSF certification for quality control. http://eas.com/pro-certified/nsf Stay away from Dymatize (maybe their natural whey if you can find it, the ingredients actually surprised me and it uses stevia instead of fake sweeteners, but even then, the protein percentage and the concentrate-to-isolate ratio seem iffy based on how it mixes in milk)... Avoid Universal Nutrition too. They're famous mostly for their animal products and used to be big on amino acids, but their protein quality is questionable. Their BCAA capsules? Total disaster. Labrada is way too expensive for what you actually get, and Weider is basically just paying for a famous name while getting lower quality products at crazy prices. Muscletech gets all the hype, but you aren't getting any extra quality for the premium price they charge, same goes for BSN. Personally, I'd go with Optimum, EAS, or Olimp (if you don't mind that slightly bland taste), because I've used them and they've always been solid...
And let me know if you end up getting an extra 72.57284 grams compared to the others... 🤣 🤣
velvettrucker3 said:Thinking about picking up some whey protein... anyone know if I should go with Elite Whey, Pro Whey, or Gold Whey?...
Just grab whatever...
James Lee142 slydriver52 said:Hey everyone, looking for some protein supplement advice to help me bulk up... hoping to pack on maybe 20 or so pounds pretty quick. I'm sitting at 6'3" and only 155 lbs right now, so any recommendations would be huge, thanks...
If you're having a hard time packing on the pounds (which looks like the case here), I'd definitely suggest looking into some weight gainers... just search for them online... 👍
Just stick to what the label says... you can always go a little lower, but if you're gonna push it, maybe aim for 120% max... anything over that is just feeding your ego... 😁
slydriver52 said:If you're on a cycle, it's way too easy to just get soft if you aren't watching your diet and portions though it really comes down to your genetics and what you're running. I won't guess at percentages, but I will say anabolics won't do much if you don't know what you're doing because you'll need to overhaul your training and ramp up the food, which is tough since you have to scale up slowly without overdoing it... But like I said, that's a whole different beast altogether..................................
There are tons of guys who think they're "huge," but they're actually just fat... 😁 you see types like that hanging out near the entrances of big clubs in Vegas🤣
slydriver52 said:When you're on a cycle, your diet is everything. You really have to watch what you eat and how much goes in... I know what I'm talking about from experience. It's a whole different world and way too deep for this forum... 😉
If you want to get huge, it doesn't matter which supplements you stack while on steroids... your diet always has to be dialed in, regardless of the cycle... sure, more stuff might boost the results, but food does 80% of the heavy lifting for mass... but you're right, it's its own beast... 🙂
