I honestly don't get why anyone would bother dealing with the hassle of traveling to Germany just to pay out-of-pocket for a surgery that’s basically routine—it's such a straightforward procedure. But look—no wireless network manager (whether it’s Windows or Atheros) actually has anything to do with that radio itself—that's strictly a power manager thing. If you can see networks but just can't connect, you're looking at a totally different headache—like your driver, card, or OS not being able to handle newer stuff like WPA2. You could try switching your AP over to WEP just to test it out—but seriously, don't leave it like that because WEP is a joke security-wise! WPA is fine, though...

Which network manager are you running, and how do you set it up? Just hit Control Panel—network connections—properties for your wireless network—hit the wireless tab—and check the box that says "use Windows to configure my wireless..."

Kids these days are just spinning their wheels trying to mess with drivers, different Windows versions, WPA, and all that nonsense—it’s a total waste of time. But look, Alex Johnson4 actually laid out a real way through this. Here’s the deal: the IBM Power Management tool lets you toggle the actual radio receiver using those Fn keys, rather than just disabling the whole thing in the Device Manager. It's entirely possible someone disabled the Wi-Fi radio before the OS was even finished installing, and now they're stuck. They won't be able to get it back online until they install that Power Management app and manually hit enable—or, better yet, just get the hotkey driver running and hit Fn-Fnešto.

Are you positive you actually installed both the Power Management driver and the app?

Just get that Power Management driver and app installed first—then you can go in there and flip the switch.

Skype versions older than 7.16 just don't work at all! I'm not even sure about 7.21 yet—so far, 7.40 seems to be holding up fine. God bless Microsoft, I guess.
