SSD vs. HDD: What's the actual difference? in IT Support ·
An SSD is way faster than a traditional mechanical hard drive. We're talking quicker boot times, snappy app launches, and files opening almost instantly. Plus, they pull less power, tend to last longer, and run much quieter.

Now, whether any of that actually matters to you is anyone's guess. As for whether an SSD will even fit in your specific laptop? I haven't got a clue.

Just try plugging it in; it should start working right out of the box without you needing to install any drivers at all.

Thanks for the tip! I see it's actually possible to install the Windows Desktop on Fedora too, so I'll definitely be playing around with that once I have some free time.

Alright, thanks! I'm downloading Ubuntu and Fedora now. I think I'll grab Xubuntu as well, just so I can give them all a proper test run.

Mint is just a clean, little system built for end users.

If you're looking to spin up virtual machines, then you aren't an end user—you're a developer, and honestly, that's a whole different breed of user entirely.

It’s kind of wild how none of those Linux experts bothered to point that out to you. I guess they've never actually dealt with regular end users before.

Maybe that's why they don't have any.

Look, Mint works just fine for what I need to get done. Honestly, it’s been my first and only experience with Linux, and it hasn't let me down. But now that I've finally picked up a brand new laptop, I'm feeling a bit restless. I figured it's the perfect time to dive into some other distributions—just to see if there's something out there I might be missing.

driftingcanyon2 said:That Wi-Fi card probably just needs some proprietary firmware installed—it’s pretty common with Broadcom chips—but it's usually a quick fix. I also completely forgot to mention that MX Linux handles all of this much more smoothly. AHS If you're looking for better driver support, you should really look into the AHS version. The standard release can be a bit finicky and might be exactly why you're running into that specific headache. If you haven't given the AHS version a shot yet, it’s definitely worth a go. Otherwise, your best bets are probably sticking with Fedora or Ubuntu and its various derivatives.

Virtual machines aren't some terrifying monster, nor do you need to be a seasoned developer to get them up and running. While they might not exactly be "entry-level" territory, they're certainly nowhere near requiring professional dev skills. If you're just starting out, setting up a VMware machine on Windows is actually pretty straightforward.

I just gave that AHS version a shot myself. It’s a real shame, too, because I actually really like MX Linux, but I just couldn't get it to recognize my wireless card. No matter what. I tried following a few different guides from their official forums, but absolutely nothing worked. Maybe I'll give it another go one of these days.

So, I’ve been thinking about this lately—if you're looking to dive into the world of Ubuntu derivatives, which one actually makes sense to spend your time on? Is Xubuntu really worth the effort, or should you be looking elsewhere? Honestly, there are so many options out there that it can get a bit overwhelming if you don't have a specific goal in mind.

driftingcanyon2 said:If you're just starting out, I'd suggest looking into MX Linux or PCLinuxOS; honestly, they both feel like a significant step up from Mint.

Thanks for the tip! MX looks solid on paper, but unfortunately, it won't recognize the wireless card in my HP laptop, so I'm stuck without Wi-Fi. I tried Googling a fix, but nothing simple popped up—there are tons of threads about this on their forums, but I haven't been able to nail down a solution yet. As for PCLinuxOS, I haven't really warmed up to it yet, though I plan to tinker with it a bit more.

Does anyone else have any other suggestions?

So, I've got a question for the group: what should an average user look into as an alternative to Ubuntu? This is actually my first foray into Linux, and while I'm enjoying it, I’m really itching to branch out and try a different OS.

Your top 3 Sci-Fi movie scenes? in Movies ·
That moment in Signs (2002) when it turns out the Alien invaders looking to take over Earth are actually allergic to water.

When Vickers goes sprinting in a straight line right in front of a crashing spacecraft in Prometheus (2012).

The scene in Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983) featuring the band in Jabba the Hutt's palace—well, not the original one, but that CGI version they added later.

Three is way too few; I can think of several more.

When that spacecraft hits the Moon right in the eye in Le voyage dans la lune (1902).

Those three breasts in Total Recall (1990).

That head explosion in Scanners (1981).

Deckard shooting the replicant in the back in Blade Runner (1982).

When Zorg nearly chokes on a cherry in The Fifth Element (1997).

That bathroom scene in The Iron Giant (1999).

"The enemy can't press the button if you disable their hand," from Starship Troopers (1997).

The scene in the car in Children of Men (2006).

The fight over the desk in Brazil (1985).
How to upload files from a CD? in IT Support ·
Sarah Adams48 said:How on earth am I supposed to send this much data to someone? Is there a way to just host it somewhere so they can download it directly? I definitely don't want to try sending all of this via email.

Look, here is what you do. Just toss everything into a single folder, compress that folder using something like WinRAR or WinZip, and then upload it to a file-hosting site. You could use MediaFire—it’s incredibly user-friendly—or even something like Dropbox or Mega if you prefer. Once the upload finishes, you'll get a download link. Simply send that link to the recipient, and they can grab the file, unzip it using whatever software was used to pack it, and they're all set. It's that simple.

Honestly, that extra hundred bucks isn't even worth stressing over. It's a non-issue.$67 Look, I wrote "1000" just to put some kind of number in there. I’m fully aware my rig isn't exactly a powerhouse, and honestly, I’m not even a hardcore gamer, so I figured there might be something decent available for a lower price point—I haven't really kept up with how much things cost these days. Does anyone know if there’s actually a massive performance gap between an NVIDIA GTX 1050 and an NVIDIA GTX 1060? I tried digging through the specs for both, but frankly, I'm completely lost.

EDIT: I just realized that the NVIDIA GTX 1050 that crimsonstag84 linked to me has already been sold. I think I'll give the ones you suggested a shot instead. If anyone else has some solid recommendations, please, don't be shy—let me know!

I'm looking for some advice on which GPU to pick up for some light gaming. I'm talking about titles from a few years back—nothing too crazy. I don't mind if I have to dial the settings down to low or medium. I'd love to play things like Alien: Isolation, Dishonored 2, or Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. If I'm lucky, maybe even Prey or Elex if the hardware can handle it. Should I be hunting for something brand new at a local shop like Best Buy, or am I better off scouring eBay or Facebook Marketplace for a used card? Ideally, I'd like to keep this under $333.
Movies based on TV shows in Movies ·
Paradise Hotel is essentially a spin-off of the series Bottom. Then you have The Naked Gun, which was built directly from the foundation of the show Police Squad!. The Fugitive actually stems from that same iconic TV series (which also served as the basis for U.S. Marshals). Similarly, Twilight Zone: The Movie is based on the original series. After Monty Python's Flying Circus, we saw several films follow suit. And let's not forget Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, which is tied back to the series Twin Peaks. You could also throw Jackass movies, Mission: Impossible, The Addams Family, The Untouchables, and so on into the mix.

Lately, I’ve been diving back into their early catalog, and honestly? Every single listen just seems to pull me in deeper. My heart still belongs to those classic eras when Roland was steering the ship (specifically Transmissions from The Satellite Heart and Clouds Taste Metallic), though I have to admit, in a Priest Driven Ambulance is getting dangerously close to becoming a top-tier favorite for me.

Then today, I stumble upon the new single from the upcoming album, and man, I am impressed. It’s refreshing. They haven't put out something this stripped-back and genuinely good in quite a while.

Most original alien life forms in sci-fi? in Movies ·
Think about it: a living, breathing ocean covering an entire world like in *Solaris*? Or maybe those mysterious entities from *The Abyss*? Then you’ve got the inscrutable aliens and their monolith from *2001: A Space Odyssey*. Or even that invisible presence from *Forbidden Planet*. Honestly, there are so many incredible examples of truly well-conceived aliens out there.
