GPU Buying Guide - (Read first post) in Desktops ·
I did a little digging on Craigslist (typed in AGP and scrolled through all the pages)☕ and honestly, most of this looks alright to me. I'll probably reach out to some of these folks and see if I can negotiate a better price...

Listed them from strongest to weakest...

The ASUS M2N32-SLI deluxe http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD... just sits there on my desk. Is it still worth looking at? I can't help but wonder if it actually holds up under pressure today. It’s a classic, right? But does that matter when everything moves so fast? Just thinking about it makes me curious. What do you guys think?
Check out this link to the ASUS M2N32-SLI deluxe http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD...eless_Edition/. Seriously, have you guys seen the specs on this thing? It’s pretty wild.

I've got an Intel Core 2 Duo running in my rig right now. Any thoughts?
My current card is an Nvidia 8800 GTS.

What’s actually the best move here? I'm trying to figure out what kind of upgrade would make the most sense for this motherboard. Honestly, the price of the graphics card doesn't matter to me, and I don't really care which shop I pick up from. What should I go with?

So, you think I should just go out and hunt down another 8800 GTS on eBay for like $50 and call it a day? Is that really what you're suggesting?🤷

So what if it runs hot? It’ll just be operating at maybe 80% of its actual potential, but it isn't going to spontaneously combust or anything. If you've got the cash, just buy it.🤷

If you can't find it at a local Best Buy or maybe a Target...$6.75 or some other big-box retailer...

If you’re living in the NYC area, this guy is selling a 4890 for $167 http://www.craigslist.org/listing/graphics-card-ad-3711272
Honestly, it's going to be pretty tough to find a better deal than this.

The PSU is rated for about 525W total. It looks like the 3.3V and 5V rails combined hit 270W, while the 12V rail maxes out at 360W (total combined power)

That's what it says about the power supply... honestly, I have no clue what all these numbers actually mean. 😁

Will it be enough, or am I cutting it too close? 🤷

I have this chance to swap my old 8800gt for a 4870x2... now I'm just sweating over one thing: would my 525w power supply (HIPER HPU-4S525) actually be enough to run that absolute monster? Here is what else is in the rig; CPU: Athlon x2 5000+be, motherboard: GA-M56S-S3, 2gb RAM, 3 hard drives (80, 160, 320)...
I mean, I'm pretty sure the answer is no, but man, I really wish it was yes.😁

It’s gotta be Homer!
Let me know when the kid with the ball shows up—I'm itching to overclock this processor.🤣🤣

Edward Peterson70 said:Aha. Wait, where did his signature go? 😁

It lasted about a month and a few days... then it just died on him.😠

Now I really need to find something good to use. I was thinking about throwing in some Homer Simpson clips.😁

Can we get one of those fortune tellers to give slyheron13 an answer? 🙄

I guess they've all been busy working lately, huh?😁

p.s.s. My signature looks much better now.😢

No worries, we're all here to help.😉 I haven't actually unlocked anything like this myself, though, so if things start smoking, don't go asking Andrew Fox74 for advice! 😁

I think this might be it, but honestly, you should probably do a little more digging on Google just to be safe

James Morris4 said:I’m running into some confusion again (?!)... I’ve been messing with these jumpers on my motherboard (if those little switches for clk_ratio are actually jumpers) trying to toggle them between on and off like usual. I found some specific combinations in the manual for the multipliers. So, I shut down the PC, set those "switches" to the combo for 12.5, but when I boot back up, the multiplier is stuck at 15 again. There's also this clk_sw thing I can't quite wrap my head around, but I've tried everything—even toggling the clk_sw between on and off—and nothing changes. Does anyone know why it won't stick?

It's likely that your processor is locked... which means you're stuck with whatever you've got (that single multiplier). Your only real option for changing the frequency is through the Front Side Bus.

James Morris4 said:Ahaaaaaa... everything makes sense now. Thanks for all the effort! 😉

No big deal, I just stumbled upon this by accident and figured I'd just copy and paste it here.

James Morris4 said:By the way, what's your current setup? I don't think I caught your specs earlier...

Motherboard: 7N400-Pro2 Rev 1.0
AMD Athlon 2500+, Volcano 12 cooler... what are we looking at here?
RAM setup: 2x 512MB, 333MHz.
Graphics card situation: I had an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro flashed to run like a 9800SE—honestly, such a legendary card—but it finally kicked the bucket. So now? It’s just an ATI Radeon 7200.😁 Time to go out and grab some new gear.

If I can track down the manual, I'll take a look, but something isn't adding up... You mentioned an AMD Athlon 3000+ at 1.8 GHz, right? But I've got a 2400+ running at 2.0 GHz. How does that work? Am I just totally lost when it comes to this stuff? 😁

I think it all comes down to the core architecture. My processor uses a Barton core, so it runs at a lower clock speed, but it has more cache and stays cooler (at least, I think it does). Plus, the Front Side Bus is higher, whereas yours is a Thoroughbred....

James Morris4 said:Man, at least you actually have access to the multiplier! I can't find it anywhere. I've been looking at screenshots online and seeing people diving into the Registry Mechanic... or even the BIOS, but I'd never find those settings if I didn't already know exactly where to look. I try hitting CTRL + F1 and all I get is a bunch of extra options under advanced chipset stuff or whatever, but there's absolutely no sign of a multiplier setting.

I was under the impression that most CPUs only support a single multiplier unless they're unlocked or a mobile version. I can't adjust the multipliers through the motherboard either; I think you have to use specific jumpers on the board (look for clk_ratio in the manual). Personally, I just bumped it up using the Front Side Bus. I pushed it to 200 and my CPU jumped from 2500+ (1.8) straight to 3200+ (2.2).

p.s. these American boards don't have MIT support.

Bryan Wood49 said:OT: I'm really curious to see how long Andrew Fox74 can hold out with this signature....🤣

Honestly, he’s been holding steady for about two weeks now. 😁
Running from the moderators like a fugitive on the run. 😛

James Morris4 said:My board is three years old, an ASUS Motherboard, and I highly doubt it has any auto-recovery features... 😁
But I definitely still have the battery. 🙂

I have the 7n400-pro2. Same exact mess. No jumpers, no automatic settings, just the battery to worry about.
As for overclocking? I gave up on that. Since I only have two multipliers to choose from, it’s either 2500+ or 3200+, nothing in between.

Do you happen to have a motherboard jumper to reset the BIOS? 🙄 You should check your manual—mine doesn't actually have one. Or, did you try pulling the battery out of the board? 3. No.

Basically, you just reset your BIOS back to the factory defaults. And with those default settings, the processor isn't overclocked, and everything else is stuck at 5.

I filed my formal objection (handed over two copies—they took one and stamped/returned the other), but now I'm stuck wondering: how long does this actually take to process? When am I going to get a summons or some kind of notice? Is it going to be in a week? A month? A whole year?
