Mistaken wire transfer/payment error in Banking, Insurance & Loans ·
nimbleheron said:I'm dealing with pretty much the same headache.

So, I was an AT&T customer, and after getting hit with some collections, I started paying it off $133 in 12 monthly installments directly to AT&T's account, or so they told me at the time. Fast forward about a year after my last payment, and now the collection agency is telling me: "Oops, you sent that to the wrong account; you should've been paying us instead. You gotta go ask AT&T for a refund." So, I filed a formal request with AT&T on September 23rd, attached all my receipts and everything. Since then? Crickets. First, they promised to have it sorted within 15 days of receiving it (back on Sept 23rd), but then they changed their tune and said the dispute was being processed starting October 5th, meaning the new 15-day window ends October 20th. Well, October 20th is basically here, and I haven't heard a peep from them... Is there any way the IRS could just force a refund since that's where the money went?
What's my move here...

Once a garnishment kicks off, isn't the only smart move to just get that money into your account immediately (so it goes straight to the creditor)?
If you actually paid AT&T directly, they should have seen the debt dropping—or disappearing entirely—and been required to clear the garnishment with the bank (or the IRS).
That whole "you should have paid the agency's account" thing? Pretty sure that's total nonsense. Such an account doesn't even exist!
Just settle this directly with AT&T.
Western Union in Banking, Insurance & Loans ·
rustyridge said:I just got this email saying the United Nations fund based out of New York City, United Kingdom, is handing out donations from the UN to help people through this global financial crisis. They said I could pick up the cash via Western Union, but there’s a catch—I have to wire them $200 first for "identification purposes" and some security stuff to get an official file tag (IRF). They even gave me the exact details for where to send the money.
Obviously, I didn't send anything because it sounds totally sketchy... Has anyone else dealt with something like this lately?

Forget about it and definitely don't pay a dime!
(Great idea! 🙄)

Mark Turner7 said:Hey everyone,

So, I'm currently out in the USA and I'm running into this annoying headache with an Intel card from Chase Bank (my checking account).

At the end of last week, I pulled out about 200 bucks (roughly $200) and had 200 left over... so my plan was to head back on Monday to grab the rest, but when I get to that final step—you know, just hitting the button to release the cash—the machine hits me with a "not sufficient funds" message. Which is hilarious, because I checked my balance right there at the ATM and it clearly shows 204 bucks sitting there. I even tried just grabbing 50 bucks to see if that would work, but nope, same exact error. To make things even more interesting, my sister and my wife actually sent over another couple hundred later that same day, so the balance should be up to 423 now.

I figured I'd give it another shot on Tuesday, but again, the ATM gives me the same old song and dance. Just to rule out any weirdness, I tried the ATM at the hospital where I work, then tried a few other machines all over town, and it’s the same story everywhere. Does anyone have a clue what might be causing this? Or maybe you know someone who knows someone who deals with this kind of thing? Any info at all would be a huge help, thanks. 🙂

Not sure about the USA, but foreign ATMs are notorious for being wrong. It’ll tell you that you have, say, 200 dollars, when in reality you actually have USD!
Chase Student Starter Pack in Banking, Insurance & Loans ·
Ethan Thomas40 said:Hey, I know some of you have already touched on this, but I just need to say it out loud to ease my mind a bit. 😁 So, I only opted for the overdraft portion of my student banking package. For a while now, I’ve been sitting in a pretty deep deficit, even though I have steady deposits coming in every month... it's just how it is.
The other day, I was logged into my JPMorgan Chase online banking checking over my accounts, and when I saw that my overdraft limit expires on November 30th, I nearly had a heart attack. 🙂 Does that limit automatically extend for another six months, or what?

Well, if that's what it says, I guess that overdraft lasts forever since that date doesn't actually exist. 😂

Of course you can, at any ATM. But you'll probably save a few bucks if you hit up a Wells Fargo machine, since they're part of the JPMorgan Chase network over there.

Ryan Carter52 said:You could $1.75 I guess, but I don't really see the point, since she'll probably just laugh at you while you're stuck waiting in line for thirty minutes at Wells Fargo to make your $1.75.🙂
I've definitely paid $33 before.
Maybe just pay $17 if you feel like you absolutely have to.

It’s not worth paying $17 since you can't even pull out less than $33 😁 from an ATM anyway.
Opening a foreign currency account... in Banking, Insurance & Loans ·
analogowl7 said:Hey there, so I went ahead and set up a foreign currency account at Bank of America today, specifically in Euros. My main goal here is just to handle some online payments using my debit card, but I have a few lingering questions about how this all works.

First off, if I were to deposit, say, $5 into the account, am I going to get hit with some sort of transaction fee just for making that deposit?

Also, if I happen to deposit funds in U.S. dollars, does the system just automatically convert those over to Euros, and if so, what kind of conversion fees should I be expecting to see?

I was also wondering about the easiest way to check my balance—is there a specific fee for checking it, and can I just manage everything through their online banking portal?

Lastly, could someone clarify what the annual maintenance fees look like for holding an account like this?

Nope.

They don't convert; you just have both currencies sitting in the same account now.

Online works (for all currencies), or you can use an ATM (but only for USD).

Somewhere around $4-$6 every six months.
EDIT: Someone beat me to it, but the answers are the same! 🙂👍

It looks like my overdraft protection has been activated, and it seems like they're setting aside $20...
To give you some context, I carry both a Mastercard and a Maestro card. My relationship with the bank is pretty basic—they just deposit my paycheck into my checking account and I withdraw it from there. I also have a laptop I'm paying off in installments via my Mastercard, and occasionally I just hit up an ATM when I need some cash. Aside from that, I don't really do anything else with my finances. So, I guess the question is, do I actually need this overdraft protection and that extra buffer of $20?

No.🙂

I'm looking to pick up some in-game currency—you know, just like how those Facebook games have their specific "green bills," this game has its own special credits. But I’m a bit confused about the bank account situation. I was talking to my mom about it, and she mentioned I should open a standard checking account rather than a specialized savings or money market account, so that's where I'm stuck.

Mom is right (as usual)!
You only really need a savings account if you're doing some side hustle or freelance gig where they pay you out occasionally.

Does anyone have any recommendations on which one I should choose?

If you use a bank that also operates here in the US (like Wells Fargo, Chase, etc.), transferring the money back home is usually cheapest—ideally staying within the same banking group (like using Chase if you already have an account there).
