Frustrated about being left out of the inheritance in Psychology & Therapy ·
The way Americans view wealth feels so much more organic, just totally unburdened... it’s all about living in the now, whereas over here, it’s like everyone is obsessively stockpiling just to prepare for the afterlife or whatever... It’s honestly kind of darkly hilarious when you see people trying to extract their entire sense of purpose from these superficial side quests, and then those same shallow things end up being the only thing giving them a sense of status or just driving them straight into total frustration. I see these washed-up social climbers and Botoxed-out trophy wives who, because of how they grew up, genuinely believe they were cast in gold, and then on the flip side, you’ve got these paranoid types who act like they're constantly under siege... Honestly, both groups just look grotesque to me. To my mind, the only people with any real direction or soul are those who value themselves and others through actual humanity—people who actually trust their own wits and their own hard work... But these other folks? They’re just prisoners of their own delusions and that old-school mentality where having stuff is the only way to prove you actually exist.

And what you said about the other part is so true. Just a quick side note, though—they don't actually have kids together; she has a son from a previous marriage. And yeah, I really do try to look the other way or just ignore her, but her influence on him is just massive. Though, really, that's on HIM, unless she's somehow cast a spell on him, 😬 which doesn't sound entirely impossible.

Here's a perfect example: My dad invites me over for lunch, so I go. Lunch isn't even finished yet, and I pick up a newspaper to flip through for a bit, and she snaps at me, asking why I'm holding a newspaper instead of a broom to help sweep the patio.😲
And mind you, he only invites me over once a year. Being the "nice girl" I am, I just quietly picked up the broom just to please my dad. Looking back, I should have just told her to go fly a kite.🤣

What would you do in that situation?

I wouldn't say it's his fault, per se, he's just too weak to push back against her... I know it kills you to see your dad stuck in a position like that, it's just not right...

I’d either try to cut those visits down to an absolute bare minimum—like, practically non-existent—or if I felt up to it, I'd start opening my dad's eyes. Like, when she throws those little jabs at you, if your dad hears them, you could totally shut her down by pointing out how rude she's being, basically making her look small and uncivilized right in front of him...

As for that thing with the lunch, man, if I were in your shoes, I would've reacted the second my blood started boiling. It's possible I wouldn't have snapped at her if it was just us, but if Dad was listening, I would've told her she ought to spend more time reading books herself, since common etiquette says everyone picks up their own trash... then I'd just go right back to my paper, and if Dad was watching, I'd keep making her look bad in his eyes...

It just hit me while I'm typing this, the fact that your usual "just ignore her" tactic hasn't worked tells me just how thick-skinned and oblivious this woman is... so maybe a strategy of much harder resistance, where you peel back all those layers of her primitivity and expose her right in front of him, might actually get somewhere better...
The way you describe her, she sounds like a real piece of work...

How long have she and your dad been together?

He’s been there for me my whole life, helping me out and doing whatever I ask, but lately—maybe for the last seven years or so—I’ve realized he just seems focused on finding flaws. He’s constantly nitpicking everything about me and my son, his grandson

It’s anything from pointing out a blemish on my face (like, why would you even mention that??) to asking what’s wrong when I’m feeling under the weather. It’s like he just refuses to see the good stuff
I remember one day my little guy was eating a tomato, and it was so juicy it was dripping down his chin, and my unknown looks at me and asks why on earth the kid is drooling while he eats 😲

I honestly don't know what's gotten into him. We’ve never really been the type to sit down and have deep heart-to-hearts; we just don't have that kind of dynamic. Plus, he's become quite reserved, especially when he’s around his awful wife. And believe me, that isn't just my take—everyone feels it, even her own son
I just can't forgive him for letting her run the show like this. He is a completely different person depending on whether she’s standing next to him or not. It’s wild. Back in the day, whenever he wanted to give me money, he’d always go through these elaborate hoops just to make sure she didn't notice. He should have just stood his ground and said, "Here you go," and if she complained, he should have simply replied, "This is my child, and I'm giving it to her"
I just wish he'd wake up
I would never dream of doing anything to hurt him. Heavens, no! But the way he acts when she's around is just... not normal
God, if you're listening, please help pull him away from her negative influence 🙂

I totally forgot to mention when I was talking about my dad... he was always doing that thing where he’d point out my flaws, but you know, it was always super subtle and actually felt constructive...

So, if I had messed up just one question on a test, he wouldn't even call me out directly... instead, he’d just turn to the rest of the class and ask if anyone actually got a perfect score, and if someone did, he’d just give this little cleared-throat sound... like, "hmm-hm." He wouldn't be picking on me or anything, but he’d definitely drop those comments about how it only happened because I lost my focus or didn't go to the nurse when I needed to or whatever...

That definitely laid the groundwork for my future perfectionism, which can be an amazing tool to have in your kit, but I guess it can also turn into a pretty dangerous thing later on in life...

This is honestly killing me because it just keeps reminding me of my dad, so I have to mention... 😁
It’s always those kinds of questions, you know... everyone just looks my way like they're waiting for a chance to pity me, from the judgmental types to the people who act all pale and sickly, even the bottom-feeders, all because of how thin I am and this constant, nagging fear that I might just lose consciousness one of these days... 😕
So, even though we’ve totally changed how we deal with things, people still feel this weird, constant need to comment on me like I'm some kind of statue just standing there... 😁

I feel like I can speak freely here. Honestly, if he has a kid with this other woman, she probably can't see past her own nose, and to her, you’re just some obstacle she’d rather prune away. It's such a textbook situation, but knowing that doesn't make it any less gut-wrenching for you. Men often drift away from their kids when they leave their wives, and while that clearly isn't happening with your dad, his wife seems to have this totally warped view of everything. There's nothing you can do to change how she thinks, and you already know that...
If I were in your shoes, I’d try to just tune her out and focus entirely on being there for my dad as much as I possibly can.
I know you just want to erase her from existence like an eraser, and even though you can't actually do that, you can get pretty close by just ignoring her presence and putting all your energy into him.

So, what’s the deal with your relationship with your own dad...
What exactly are we even supposed to be thanking him for...
So, what exactly is everyone's beef with him...
Do any of you ladies deal with that whole unknown complex... you know, those weird sexual fantasies about your dad...
So, I've been thinking about this lately... whether guys actually deal with that whole Oedipus complex thing... like, if it's a real psychological hurdle or just something people throw around...
Ever had those moments where you just wanted to kill your dad...
Is your dad an authority figure, a buddy, some total stranger, or just someone you can't help but look down on with pity... or is he actually full of love for you, and you feel that same deep connection back to him...
It hasn't been that long since my dad brought out my old diary, like, really ancient... he stumbled upon it while he was clearing out the attic, all dusty and filled with the messy handwriting of my eight-year-old self. I'm positive he read those childhood ramblings because he looked at me with this bittersweet, playful expression and told me I still had plenty of room left to write... I won't go back into my eight-year-old headspace right now, but there was one part in there where I mentioned how I had a huge falling out with XY just because she kept picking on me and saying I was acting all high and mighty with my dad... She was always such a troublemaker, even though she was only seven, just a few months younger than me... 😬)
Pride... that’s really the core of everything I feel when I think about my dad. And then there's this vision of who I am, exactly like he saw in me—he always told me there was still so much more left for me to write, and that belief, that constant support... it meant everything. It’s this deep love mixed with those tiny little moments that you don't realize matter until they circle back to hit you out of nowhere. Like when I was fifteen and flying across the country on one of those long trips, he just stood there waving at the plane for forever after it had already disappeared into the sky. I didn't see it myself, obviously, but people told me about it later. They even asked my mom if he was super attached to me, and she was telling that story again last year, and one specific detail just caught me completely off guard... I actually broke down crying right then and there, which was weird because I'm not really the type to lose it like that. We definitely have that bond, sure, but he also pushed me toward being independent. I remember being only eight years old and taking the subway by myself to get to practice, just because he had this absolute faith that I could handle things on my own and do them right. I'm just really grateful for that...

There were issues—plenty of them. And honestly, I don't hold any grudges anymore. I had to step away the second that protective instinct he had started feeling less like love and more like he was suffocating me... In my rebellion, I made some calls I probably wouldn't have made if he’d just let our relationship breathe and grow naturally. He wanted to keep me as this little girl he could direct and guide forever, forgetting that he actually raised a fighter who knows how to handle herself and take charge... But he gets it now, and everything between us has finally shifted into something real.
When it comes to those complexes and that whole situation with ExxonMobil, I guess you could say they played a role in the parts of my life where my dad was my absolute hero... back when I was still trying to find my own footing and build up some actual confidence by just looking at him as an example. But in the more vulgar sense? It wasn't really ever there...
Honestly, I don't know if I actually wanted him dead or what, but he knew exactly how to push my buttons... there were moments when I felt like I just wanted to beat him senseless until he vanished from the face of the earth, and then once that anger finally passes, I'm right back to being fine again...

My relationship with my dad has gone through so many different chapters... first that childhood phase where he was basically a superhero, then moving into being super critical of him, followed by all that teenage rebellion, and finally reaching this long-term transformation where I’ve come to terms with the fact that even though he isn't this flawless mythical figure from a storybook, he really did just want what was best for me. When he tells me that I'm a better version of him, I think he feels like he actually succeeded in his mission. But I always tell him I'm not "better," we're just different... and even though I'm his daughter, I'm not some extension of him. My roots go in different directions, my values and my worldview are my own, even if he definitely left his mark on who I am today...
I’m just so incredibly grateful to him for raising me to be such a little fighter and teaching me that I’m the only one holding the reins of my own life... that I shouldn't give any weight to anyone else's words, unless it's the voice of my own conscience. He isn't even religious, but honestly, he taught me more about faith than anyone else ever could... about having true belief in myself and actually building the person I want to be...
Losing interest in socializing: Is anyone else feeling this? in Psychology & Therapy ·
I honestly think a better title would be—just losing the actual capacity to talk to people...

because if you actually had more time on your hands, you’d probably have the energy to socialize too. It isn't even about losing interest in others, which would be an internal thing, so it wouldn't necessarily cause a real issue...

I went through something similar where I was so burnt out that I didn't even have the strength to answer basic questions. My whole life just became this endless loop of college, work, hitting the gym, and then basically passing out in bed every single night...

The stuff happening around you is what forces you into that state, but you really have to watch out so it doesn't drag on too long, because those external pressures eventually start eating away at everything else...
Parental infatuation: Is this normal? in Psychology ·
Laura Ortiz83 said:THANK YOU!!! That is more than enough for me. I have zero interest in letting this thread drag on AGAIN!

Thanks.

I totally get why you’re linking those over-the-top fatherly gestures—let's call them displays of affection—to something more sinister like incest, even if it's just latent, but while they might seem to share some traits, it's honestly pretty hard to draw any real conclusions without knowing the full backstory of the entire family history... Incest typically happens within a family unit where the victim is usually a child going through puberty, which clearly isn't the case with your boyfriend. But reading through this, it feels to me like he's maybe not a victim per se, but he's definitely an object for his father's compulsive behaviors. Regardless of my take or how you personally perceive it since you're the one witnessing it, if your boyfriend hasn't been traumatized or if his dad's behavior doesn't actually bother him, then the only thing that truly matters is how that behavior makes him feel inside... You could also look at whether he's even aware that his dad's actions are inappropriate, or if he's just brushing off the weirdness because of the existing family dynamics, like maybe being aware of his mother's coldness and just trying to please the father he actually loves or respects more...
Parental infatuation: Is this normal? in Psychology ·
It’s totally possible, honestly... those are just well-documented, studied, and clearly defined psychological patterns that are completely inappropriate.

When parents are stuck in a marriage that isn't working, they often try to offload their own internal frustrations, tension, and especially those emotional and sexual voids onto their kids through forced intimacy... and even when it’s not explicitly sexual—like what you're describing with your boyfriend and his dad—if there’s this constant, repetitive touching or invading his personal space, it starts looking less like affection and more like some kind of compulsive behavior...
Once someone loses your respect, is there any coming back? in Psychology & Therapy ·
Hey everyone, I won't waste your time with a massive intro... It feels weirdly heavy to feel this need to reach out to people who might have walked a similar path at this hour, but honestly, it’s just practical. A nightmare woke me up about half an hour ago. I know it's just my brain processing suppressed disappointment toward someone—someone I didn't even confront in real life because, frankly, once I realized they had betrayed me, I just stayed silent... It was a total backstab. Whether it was jealousy or just a desperate need to cozy up to a third party by dragging my name through the mud, the motive doesn't really matter anymore. They just fell so low in my eyes... it’s that feeling where you aren't even angry enough to yell, you just look at them like some pathetic insect you wouldn't even bother stepping on. Just pure nausea when I think about them. Since we’ve been close basically our whole lives, there are so many connections, and plenty of other people who know both of us... I hear through the grapevine that this Person is struggling because I’m not reaching out, acting "weird" or distant, wondering if something happened to me (nothing bad has happened, thank God!)... they can sense I've pulled away, and they probably know why now. All those lies they told have finally brought the storm right to their own doorstep, realizing the doors are slammed shut and they're just pounding on them with nobody home to answer
.
To get back to that nightmare that jolted me awake—I rarely dream, and I've only had a few night terrors in my entire life. The reason I'm posting in the middle of the night is because of this specific one, the one where I woke up feeling like I was underwater. In the dream, we were facing off in front of two other people. I confronted her, saying everything I felt, laying it all out there... She looked so stricken with pain, her face just went blank, and she ran into a room and threw herself out a window. I looked out and saw her lying there, lifeless, from such a height. Seeing that broke something inside me. Even now, trying to recount that image, the words just catch in my throat
.
I wanted to share this traumatic late-night experience and ask how you would interpret a dream like this on a spiritual level... and also, how did you handle someone who disappointed you so deeply that you can't even stand the sight of them? Someone who just falls so low you lose all respect? And yet, you know deep down—without even trying to make excuses—that they aren't a saint; they're full of their own wounds and envy, and while they might love you in their own twisted way, they also hate you because you represent something they could never be. That’s how I feel about this Person, someone I've known forever, and despite everything, I don't wish them ill... I actually wish them the best. Her fate in the dream actually moved me to tears, which tells me I still love her, even if she's hit rock bottom in my eyes. I don't feel the need to call her out or explain myself... nothing at all. But even in real life, with her constantly checking up on me and trying to reach out, and now after this dream, it feels like she’s actually repenting. But just as I refuse to engage with her in person because she isn't worth the breath, I don't want to hear from her or see her under any circumstances
.
There’s no doubt about the bias or the gossiping involving that third party, because certain things could only have come from this Person
.
The question I'm left with is: when someone loses your respect this completely, is there ever a way back? And what does that road even look like?
