Friendships vs. Acting Roles in Psychology ·
Kenneth Morris57 said:I’m not entirely sure if I picked the right title for this thread... but... anyway, let me just jump straight into the question: why on earth do some people switch up their roles when you're just, say, hanging out with friends?

They sit there and listen to you, totally willing to offer advice and everything, but then—and this is the part that gets me—they go and talk about your situation to someone else as if it isn't some deep, meaningful issue. It’s like they’re treating your life like some trivial little human-interest story in the local newspaper, you know? Just all sarcasm, jokes, and acting like they're somehow above it all!

I actually ended up calling out someone recently because they did the exact same thing to me... and well, they just shut down and got all huffy and offended... almost like I was the one in the wrong here, which, I don't know, doesn't seem right at all. I mean, obviously, I did confront them verbally, but I kept it really polite and civil since that's just how I was raised 😍

It's because, frankly, most people don't actually care. Most people don't feel any genuine emotional weight from someone else's struggles. You're better off being your own man when it comes to solving your problems.

In their eyes, your crisis is nothing more than gossip over morning coffee at Starbucks. It's just another story. There is no real empathy intended to help you; they simply play the part of a friend out of basic social politeness, purely so you won't think they're ignoring you or dismissing your words.

The worst thing you can do is show vulnerability or air your grievances in person. People operate on a principle of social hierarchy and dominance. They watch for moments of weakness, waiting for an opportunity to assert themselves and socially dominate someone who is currently down.

There are only two people who truly assist me with my issues, and they do it best.

One is myself, facing the problem and seeking the solution.
And the other is the positive, creative side of my own mind that generates the resolution or provides the drive to escape the mess.

Everyone else is just there to ensure I don't say anything to them. I won't give them the chance to spiritually wound me or socially degrade me by reducing my significant realities to something insignificant.
Is my dad losing it? in Psychology ·
Get him out to Norway immediately, or at least let him blast Burzum and Gorgoroth all day long

Jokes aside!

Your father is suffering from some seriously severe indoctrination

From your description, he sounds like someone who was living in a cave until yesterday and suddenly discovered this nonsense called "religion"
Either send him to a psychiatric ward or a mental asylum... I’m genuinely worried he thinks he’s stuck in the Middle Ages fighting a crusade.
Then again, since we live in an ultra-religious country full of zealots and shallow believers, maybe your father is actually considered a "socially acceptable person" here.
If you share that same rural, small-town religious mindset, then everything is fine with him.
But from the perspective of a civilized, urban person in the 21st century? Your father is beyond help.

Believe me, whenever I grab coffee with the guys from my neighborhood, I see at least two or three people drop at least $167 into a machine.
Here in San Francisco, people throw money at these things left and right... especially the younger crowd.

They clear roughly 3,000-$1333 a day on those machines, and every third day, they pay out a winner who probably walks away with something like $333 tops.

I’m looking at opening a cafe in a few years. I already have the space; I just need to
build up some more capital and get the place renovated. Everything else is ready—I could open whenever I want.

Just set up two poker machines and a Book of Ra machine.

But list them as entertainment devices, not gambling machines. That way, you aren't bleeding money on sales tax.
When the inspectors show up, you just hang a sign saying "machine out of order," or better yet, put a sticker on it saying "for entertainment purposes only." Even if the regulars and the gamblers know damn well that isn't true...

The inspectors leave, you flip the power back on, and you watch the local bettors and card sharks pour cash into your pocket. All profit goes straight to you.

And run some "specials"... coffee and a pastry$3.75 or maybe a combo deal with a muffin.$4.25
That’ll definitely pack the place out during the morning rush and the lunch hour.

Get two TVs. One small one for news tickers and a big one for the Champions League. You'll need that if you actually want decent foot traffic and popularity.

I know a cafe in my neighborhood—busiest spot around. They've been turning a massive profit for three years straight without a single issue from the IRS.

Look, everyone complains about these new tax regulations, but let's be real: there is no bypassing this through legal loopholes or shady side deals. It's unavoidable...
