Liberation as the goal. But for what? in Spirituality ·
Just like an apple tree doesn't drop fruit the moment it sprouts, spiritual growth takes time before those fruits finally appear. Take Milarepa, for instance. He started out filled with rage and even committed murder, yet he transformed into a Tibetan yogi who stands at the very pinnacle of spiritual mastery. It’s a powerful lesson for the average person who thinks they have it all figured out—you know, the "I know everything" crowd. It's just empty, dismissive philosophy. But honestly, if someone is truly happy, who am I to argue? Everyone knows what's best for themselves.
Liberation as the goal. But for what? in Spirituality ·
Wow, talk about missing the mark completely... I’d suggest you don't try to approach these books with pure logic alone, since they aren't exactly academic philosophy texts. The Tibetan Book of the Dead is essentially a guidebook for the deceased, offering them a chance to break free during that transition—basically avoiding being reborn into a cycle of bad karma or suffering. It’s all about progressing toward higher realms and achieving union with God or pure light. You’ve totally missed the point of the book!

casualtiger2 said:To me, this sounds a bit like an attack (or just a general judgment) against philosophers who are just spinning empty wheels and spiritualists who are selling smoke. Since many of us have dealt with that kind of attitude before—often much harsher—it shouldn't be a surprise when people respond with a little sarcasm or cynicism right out of the gate.
It also feels a bit like a "I'll ask, but I already know the answer" situation. I think a lot of people deceive themselves that way—hoping that if they just push hard enough for a long enough time, they can achieve something "their way" (which, let's face it, might be impossible) instead of actually trying to shift their perspective.

On the bright side, you kept the conversation going normally, which is already a huge plus (honestly, lately there's been a surge of clones just wasting everyone's time), so maybe we'll actually reach some kind of conclusion.

I find the posts from Maleficent, nimblemaker3, and bluemason3 to be very substantial, both theoretically and in terms of practical application.

The question of transcendence isn't about megalomania or a lack of humanity; it really is one of the most vital questions in spirituality.
~ "Seek first the kingdom of heaven, and all these things will be added to you" and
~ "The kingdom of heaven is within you"

While many interpret that as a total rejection of the material world, the spiritual path I follow (tantric) doesn't ignore any aspect of human existence.
Desires aren't suppressed, crushed, or cast aside. They just get the place they deserve in a person's life. Nothing more, nothing less. And that goes for physical and mental needs too. But even then, the idea remains to "seek the kingdom of heaven first"—that need to distinguish the essential from the trivial, the permanent from the fleeting... as the Indians would say.
And without getting attached to them (vairagya).
Being centered in oneself and knowing who you are isn't a matter of ideology, philosophy, religion, or psychology—it's a matter of direct experience (though all those things can certainly help). And that requires grueling, daily work and introspection. There are no shortcuts, no magic wands, and no easy fixes.

Now, certain seeds have existed for thousands of years, but you could always say—for whatever reason—that you don't like those solutions.
Then it's on you to come up with a better one.
So, what would the ideal answer to your question look like to you?
Based on what theory or practice?
And why haven't you been able to achieve what you want so far? Where do you think it's stalling?

PS
"Lord, grant me the patience to endure
what I cannot change,
give me the strength to change
what I can change,
and
the wisdom to tell the difference."

Oh, dear casualtiger2, there absolutely are! One such way actually transcends most spiritual traditions and their typical practices. Unfortunately, that specific method is strictly forbidden in Western civilization.

There are methods created by men, and then there are the paths provided by God to make our return and reunification much smoother. With God, the process is effortless, whereas human systems make it incredibly difficult. Now, my dear casualtiger2, if you really want to know why people insist on making it so hard... just ask yourself why.

I’ve had a very similar experience, and for a few years now, everything has finally been settling into place. Perhaps I’m navigating similar waters as placidharbor7?
Actually, I was once the one doing all the searching, but then I just gave up—and that's exactly when everything started flowing to me. Right now, though, I'm struggling to fully embrace certain realizations because of old mental programming. One thing I’ve definitely sensed is the presence of God, but if I start bringing that up in spiritual discussions, people might think I'm just some religious fanatic. It’s truly fascinating how that works when discussing spirituality, even with something like Buddhism.
placidharbor7 once mentioned something about Kosmologos, which I'm quite eager to compare with my own insights.

Maybe Osho and the others only achieved a partial kind of enlightenment. How can I explain? You simply feel it, you know it, you recognize it...

Thanks for the posts, for two reasons.
First off, I was starting to lose hope that anyone would actually grasp what I meant regarding my—well, let’s call it "unbiased"—stance toward the users here (though anyone reading with a bit of common sense should have figured it out anyway).
Second, you saved me a ton of time on explaining myself—honestly, I probably wouldn't have phrased it any better.

Anyway, since this topic keeps coming up for some people—let’s lay out the facts.
"Objective objectivity"—the idea that some computer runs an algorithm on your posts to spit out a perfect score—doesn't exist. So, unless I get replaced, you're stuck dealing with me 🙂.

All that's left is the possibility that a moderator uses their own judgment to evaluate things based on the rules and how they see the situation. (As for the objectivity of moderation and answering specific complaints, I'll be posting a follow-up on my blog soon—though Edward Flores4 has already covered the essentials).

The forum rules come first.
Second, in my opinion, comes the actual purpose of this forum, which is tied to how most participants—including myself—view it.
This thread itself is the place where ideas can be shared, personal perspectives offered, and constructive suggestions made regarding the forum's purpose and content. That goes for everyone.
However, for reasons I can't quite wrap my head around, a handful of users decided it would be much more entertaining to use this thread (and that other one—even if their intentions differ) just to attack me.

To me, the core purpose of this forum is discussing spirituality. Since "spirituality" isn't exactly a strictly defined term, it's up to both you and me to set some boundaries (and share our visions) so we have a framework for our discussions.
While I think you can find a spiritual element in almost everything, in a narrower sense, we're talking about topics like self-discovery, the nature of the world, consciousness, altered states, philosophy, religion, ethics, psychology, sociology, history, and how individuals, groups, or humanity have pursued spiritual growth. [That includes everything from various development techniques—including those "woo-woo" methods—to meditation, prayer, chanting, yoga, karma yoga, concentration exercises, visualization, positive thinking, astrology, tarot, I Ching, Aikido... and a whole laundry list of other practices].

Of course, it’s unlikely any two users will agree perfectly on what constitutes spirituality, but I don't see that being a problem. It only becomes a problem when someone refuses to respect other viewpoints and fanatically insists their vision is the only truth, trying to convert others—which, frankly, is the exact opposite of what spirituality is all about.
Besides, you're all here, not at a sports bar, a political rally, or a church!

So, this is the general framework. It leaves room for nearly all expressions of spirituality, and through that variety, we can build a high-quality community. That is, assuming people actually write. As Edward Flores4 pointed out, you guys create the forum, not me.
I'm just here to make occasional corrections—not because I feel like playing cop, but because I see it as a way to improve the environment for everyone participating.

Right now, two major adjustments are underway. They stem directly from the rules, but they've been difficult to define and enforce until now.

1. Rigorous oversight of how participants express themselves.
In my view, things like insulting someone's family, calling people idiots or morons, telling people to check themselves into mental institutions, suggesting medication for certain issues, making arbitrary or derogatory comments about someone's character or actions—none of that is acceptable.Using solid data and actual quotes, then just constant attacking...
It doesn't help the discussion or the quality of this board—honestly, there’s no place for it here, (especially not in the spirituality section).
Most people already get this—look, we all have bad days where we snap at someone, it happens—but a handful of users seem hell-bent on pushing this exact style of "conversation."

Usually, it starts when people disagree. Instead of just calmly stating their piece and letting the other person be who they are—since you can't force a change of heart anyway—it turns into some sort of "Battle of the Alamo" where everyone starts firing wildly.
So, don't be surprised if I pop into a thread just because I see the signs of things going south. It's better for the community, and better for you (fewer strikes and warnings).

2. Cracking down on off-topic chatter.
We've got several informal cliques or "factions" floating around here with blurry boundaries—the tech gurus, the political junkies, the psychedelic crowd, the anti-political crowd, the offended, the free-thinking artists, and the general chatters.

For some weird reason, every single one of these groups acts like they own the place—trying to drag their specific niche into every single thread.
It usually looks like this:
Topic – "Butterflies in Madagascar”
- I saw some amazing butterflies in Madagascar once.
- Sure, but did anyone actually see them?
- That's nothing compared to the butterflies I see when I'm tripping.
- Wait, how can we talk about butterflies while the moderator is breathing down our necks? He's such a jerk.
- How can you even discuss butterflies when the main guy left the site and everything is falling apart?
- Anyway, let's talk about elephants in Asia instead.

Everyone belongs somewhere—though my particular little sect seems to have dwindled down to just one member. 😢

Look, I don't have any beef with any of these groups, but any off-topic rambling—basically forcing your group's specific drama or obsession onto a random topic—will be deleted, and eventually, the rules against it will get much stricter..

I think it's enough that we have one enlightenment school, one psychedelic thread, one thread for politics, one for the mods, one chat room, one thread for moderation issues, and one for suggestions to improve the site (other than firing the mod 🙂)...
All other threads should stay focused on their intended subjects.

Obviously, anyone can state their opinion in any thread, but intentionally—or even accidentally—hijacking a whole discussion to steer it toward one of those niches mentioned above won't be allowed.

If you have an issue with this, please make a reasoned argument.

@ Donna, this post is 😂
Please, following what I wrote above, refrain from trying to diagnose other members. You're at 10 strikes now. 😢
Thanks for the rest.

PS
The janitor is coming by to clean up the mess and toss the trash 😍, though I think it’s a shame to wipe out this whole chat (there are some good points in here), so I'll only be deleting the most egregious stuff.

, plus one thread on DMT, one on Ayahuasca, one chat room, one thread regarding moderation, and one for suggestions to improve the forum (other than firing the mod 🙂) …

If you disagree, please provide some actual arguments.[/I]

🙂
I really wouldn't bother writing this, but since you asked for an argument...😉
I’ve already told you my thoughts on drug terminology; using such broad terms isn't ideal when there are much more sophisticated, scientific terms available.
There isn't actually a specific psychedelic thread. There is just a general drugs thread—which used to be titled "Drug Abuse Under the Guise of Spirituality."
Since that thread was renamed, we were basically left with just the word "drugs."
And look, just the other day, some guy struggling with heroin addiction comes in trolling about having spiritual visions...
That simply isn't true, and you should know that, casualtiger2. History records the use of psychedelics for spiritual purposes, not narcotics or sedatives.
It’s honestly baffling to me that you don't realize how many different cultures have used ethnogenic substances for spiritual, shamanistic, or religious reasons.
I get that it might not interest you personally, but it's something you really ought to know and respect.

If the administration wants to police conversations about psychedelics, then they need to either ban the topic entirely or stop interfering with freedom of speech.

casualtiger2 said:First off—just to be clear—this isn't a discussion about psychedelics or using them.

What democratic rights am I missing here? Most people in the United States have already voted for their representatives—who, in turn, passed the laws that govern this entire forum. As far as I’m concerned, those rules are more than enough direction for me.
If you want to talk about psychedelics—and honestly, why should the word "drug" be considered offensive or unscientific when we're talking about heroin?—go for it. No one is stopping you. You’ve got at least two other threads open right now that cover that ground perfectly. As for me? I’m definitely not going to be the one to unlock a thread that my colleague already shut down.
If you’re trying to spark some kind of revolution or force your views on people—basically insisting you're the only one who's right—then you've picked the wrong place to hang out. Think whatever you want and lay out your arguments, but people are going to say what they're going to say. That's just how it works.
Look, if you’ve got a specific take on what defines a psychedelic versus what’s just straight-up a drug—make a dedicated thread for that. If you want to argue whether people should accept them or not, stick to those specific discussions. Don't mix the two.

Look, I think it’s great that you shared your experiences with psychedelics—really, it is—but don't expect everyone to see it through the same lens you do. People interpret things differently.
I honestly think there’s a direct link here to spirituality—to the point where things like meditation, yoga, chanting mantras, or even just falling in love actually change your physiology. It really does—your body starts pumping out its own natural "happiness hormones."
The whole point is that we're talking about hormones inherent to the body—things that don't wreck your nervous system, your physical health, or your psyche. Beyond that, they’re essentially just a direct byproduct of a person's own willpower, mental drive, and emotional state.
In that sense, I’d have to go with what Sanja said.
Quincy:
If what you're saying actually holds water, then hemp is one hell of a teacher.

Look, the whole point of being a teacher is to eventually make yourself obsolete—to get those students to a point where they’ve truly mastered the material and can fly solo without needing you anymore.

A teacher's job isn't to make students dependent on them—it's to make themselves obsolete.

So, are you actually suggesting that one of the logical outcomes of using weed for spiritual reasons is... just quitting the whole thing?
And one last thing—this isn't a thread about psychedelics. Nor is it some deep dive into global conspiracies.

Heroin falls under narcotics, whereas "drugs" is such a broad, vague term that usually carries a negative stigma.
Well, I actually thought you might agree that "drug" is an inadequate and confusing term here, since we're discussing psychedelics rather than every single substance out there.
So, I really don't see why it would be such a struggle for you to swap out "drugs" for a much more precise and appropriate term like "psychedelics."

Jeremy Palmer said:If you were paying close attention, you probably caught what she was saying at the end. She made it clear that these substances are strictly prohibited. They were only used during this experiment under incredibly controlled conditions, with every single participant being closely monitored. It’s worth noting that some people in the study actually experienced fear, anxiety, hallucinations, and other nasty side effects.

Besides, you can't just label a study "subjective" or "biased" without actually laying out the facts. You have to explain exactly why those findings would be considered false and what specific advantage the pharmaceutical industry gains by highlighting the risks associated with cannabis.

Also, Douglas, I have to say—looking back at your writing from about a year ago, things felt different. Your posts used to have this incredible clarity and punch; you were concise, sharp, and your logic was always rock solid. Now, it feels like something is missing. I’m not saying that maybe getting a little high gave you some new perspectives, but I highly doubt it stripped away your drive or left you feeling totally ungrounded. As a careful reader, I can tell a whole dimension of your voice has vanished. It honestly feels like the spirit of hemp has completely taken over your writing style.

And what didn't cause that in others? It isn't the fungus; it's just people being terrified of having their perception altered. Honestly, you get enough anxiety and fear just by turning on the TV and watching the news—way more than any mushroom could ever cause.

Furthermore, you can't just call a study "unobjective" without providing actual facts as to why it would be fraudulent, or explaining exactly what benefit Big Pharma gains by highlighting the dangers of cannabis.

Of course research funded by the government or the pharmaceutical industry isn't objective! It's designed solely to spread fear and propaganda to protect power and profit margins.
Cannabis is incredibly mild; you're more likely to die from too much coffee than from cannabis. It's all lies and propaganda. Cannabis is incredibly healing for humans—it's truly an amazing, divine miracle.
Do you have any idea how much the pharmaceutical industry rakes in from painkillers (opioids) and depression meds (psychiatric drugs) alone? And cannabis treats all of that far more safely and effectively.
Synthetic THC has been used in medicine for over 20 years now (costing about $1,300 a month), yet the plant itself is much more medicinal and completely free—it grows everywhere, regardless of the climate.

Also, dear Richard Walker79, your posts from a year ago were quite different from how they are now. Your writing used to have more lucidity, more strength, and your thoughts felt sharper, more concise, and clear. What you said had solid logic. I don't doubt that weed gave you some insights, but I highly doubt it stripped away your strength or withered your roots. A careful reader can see that an entire dimension has vanished from your writing, almost as if the spirit of cannabis has possessed your posts.

If you're referring to my writing on psychedelics... you probably are. The truth is, I just stayed quiet because I didn't want to look like a lunatic, but the movement is growing and consciousness is evolving here in the USA. In Western Europe and America, it isn't a big deal to risk your reputation by speaking up for psychedelics. Maybe things are slightly different here, especially among the spiritual crowd, but using psychedelics is inevitable for true spirituality. Spirituality without psychedelics is like trying to dig a hole with your bare fingers instead of a shovel. Human history has always involved the use of psychedelics, and those in power have always banned and persecuted them. Meditation and other spiritual paths were essentially invented by people to substitute for natural psychedelics.
I have to tell you the truth, no matter how crazy it might sound to you.

Especially since there are individuals among us who are well-versed in these terms, and they remain significant (to us).

The real issue is how the word "drugs" creates this massive misunderstanding. Instead of having a deep, spiritual discussion, the whole thing devolves into endless arguments about substance abuse, health risks, and youth. It’s been a mess—leading to user bans, nasty insults, threats, and constant censorship.
Please, can we stop sabotaging this thread? I suggest renaming it so we can pick up where we left off. Let's focus on using psychedelics for spiritual growth rather than getting bogged down in debates about drugs, prohibition, public health, or legal rights...

Didn't expect us to dive into the whole "evil moderator" vs. "righteous wolf" drama this quickly.
Instead of us chasing each other around the forum later, here's my honest suggestion—go gather more than half the votes from active users who want me to retire into legend—voluntarily.

You believe what you believe, and I believe what I believe. It's fine. I'm not banning anyone's "freedom to practice spirituality." The fact that you feel spirituality *must* involve drugs is your issue—and eventually, it'll be an issue for your family, the police, or the courts. Plenty of people understand spirituality differently. So, you're in the minority, and as such, you have all the rights and responsibilities of a minority. Pure democracy.

Maybe you're one of those "drugs elevated me, thank God" types, but hundreds of thousands of others found enlightenment through something else.
And for the record, I'm not banning "free speech"—you've got plenty of threads, and you're free to say what you think right here. So, stop making things up.
As far as I'm concerned—the end.

Well, I don't actually have those democratic rights, which is exactly why I'm telling you that using the word "drugs" isn't scientific; it's just a derogatory term. Why would we use offensive language when there's a perfectly valid scientific term like psychedelic?

Quincy:
Maybe you're one of those "drugs elevated me, thank goodness" types, but hundreds of thousands of others have been ruined by them.
Similarly, I'm not banning "free speech"—after all, you have various threads, and you're free to say what you think right here. So, you're just making things up.
As far as I'm concerned—the end.
Please understand that "drugs" is an insulting word. How would you react as a Christian if wine was labeled a drug and associated with addicts?

I won't even bother commenting on those hundreds of thousands who were supposedly ruined by psychedelics because that is 1000% a lie. But now I see you're talking about drugs...
This is the perfect example! I am discussing psychedelics, yet you are bringing up all kinds of drugs and just creating confusion. Where is the freedom in that? And why is the topic regarding the spiritual use of cannabis closed? Why can't we specify that we are talking about psychedelics rather than just any old drug?

Jeremy Palmer said:Why are you trying to sugarcoat the word drugs?

And why should the rest of us go along with it? If you think using them is perfectly fine, then the terminology shouldn't bother you so much.

It’s not about being a snake, it's just about calling things what they are...

Personally, I think it's fine for this topic to exist; it caters to the interests of the community and active members here on the spirituality-religion forum. However, changing the title just to soothe people's egos feels unnecessary. No one is calling you an addict, but there is a very thin line that users often don't realize they've crossed. Real recovery starts when someone admits they have a problem, and by then, it's usually quite late because denial is such a powerful force for anyone struggling with substance use.

When I look at the forum homepage, I see so many birthday wishes, and it's become pretty clear to me that we have a lot of minors hanging out here. We have kids who are only 12 or 13, high schoolers, and plenty of teenagers reading everything you post... In the US, kids often try their first joint during high school. If we all start babying the subject—pretending drugs are just "little treats" or divine gifts—what kind of message are we actually sending to those kids?

Well, we aren't even talking about "drugs"—we are talking about psychedelic spirituality.
There is no need for anyone to be defensive; we just need to clarify things so there isn't any confusion or unnecessary offense.
The way things are being said right now feels offensive because of the word choice.
Think about it: Christians use wine as a sacrament, but if you told them they were using drugs, they would be absolutely insulted!

Quincy:
It’s not a snake, it’s just a little legless creature crawling along....
I am not against substances because, let's face it, everyone uses something. However, the word "drugs" creates massive confusion and is far too offensive since it brings to mind heavy, dangerous, addictive substances.

Quincy:
Actually, dealing with addiction only starts once a person admits they have a problem, but by then it is often too late, because denial is such a powerful force for addicts....
People usually show physical symptoms of addiction long before they reach the stage of admitting they have one! It is just like admitting you are a witch. A little bit of pressure, some persecution, and a touch of blackmail, and suddenly—presto!—you have a witch.

Quincy:
I notice the forum covers always feature birthday wishes, which makes me realize there are quite a few minors here. Some are only 12 or 13 years old, and they read everything you write. If we all start defending drugs and claiming they are a divine gift, what kind of message are we sending to those kids?.....
And what about the discussions on politics or the adult forums? That certainly isn't for children either, is it?

I am sending these kids a message to THINK for themselves and to EDUCATE themselves about the psychedelic spirituality we are discussing. Isn't that a much better approach than spreading propaganda designed to control young minds?
I treat people like adults, not animals that need to be told what to do. In my opinion, "drugs" is simply an inadequate term; the world should use the perfectly appropriate scientific term: psychedelic.
