Why do some people need so much money? in Psychology ·
Andrew Sullivan8 said:I’m posting this here in the spirituality section, too, since I’m not really sure where it fits best... 😉

"Every single day, you open the papers and see more scandals involving millions of dollars in fraud. It seems people will go to any lengths to get rich—stealing, killing, cheating, just committing any kind of crime imaginable...

What's interesting is that almost all these dishonest schemes are pulled off by people who don't actually need the money to survive. We aren't talking about someone on the brink of starvation or someone who can't afford basic clothes and is struggling to stay alive. It's usually the middle class or the wealthy elite—people who have plenty, but simply never have enough. So much for that idea that greed is driven by necessity...

Sometimes these folks have so much wealth that three generations of their descendants couldn't spend it all, yet they still pull dirty stunts just to stack up even more.

There's something deeply tragic about money, isn't there? How it manages to ruin so many lives..."

If we look at this through the lens of humans being essentially addictive animals, then money stops being a tool for survival or luxury—it becomes just another addiction.
Tutoring under duress in Law ·

One of my professors—the guy teaching my current class—was actually giving me private tutoring for that exact same subject back before graduation. Now things have taken a weird turn..
I’m trying to figure out my legal options here. I was essentially coerced into these sessions—he threatened that I’d fail the grade if I didn't comply—and then it bled into mandatory SAT prep. We'd have up to ten students in one session, and this guy was pulling in $400 for every two-hour block.

Legally speaking, he’s completely out of line. He's my instructor, he wasn't reporting any of this income to the IRS, and frankly, it's extortion.

Any advice? Where do I even start?

Does anyone know if this can actually be resolved? I dealt with something similar back in high school. We had about 30 of us showing up for Saturday tutoring sessions at the school just because the teacher wanted to buy new rims for his car. He’d drop hints every time he flipped through a contact list, targeting almost every student in the room. The only way out was to pay up—then you'd pass the exam regardless of how poorly you actually performed. You also have to consider the reality of the situation: the principal and the teacher were practically in cahoots. Think about that.
I can’t recall the exact thread—it was a while ago—but there was a massive misunderstanding because those damn ellipses can make a sentence completely unintelligible.😉

maybe things will stay this way in the future...

Oh, come on. Don't go there. That fairy gave you solid advice.
As for being alone? People just pretend it's some kind of tragedy. Because we’re social animals by nature, anyone who prefers their own company gets branded as a deviant freak. It’s an endless cycle of self-suggestion—we feed into that negative energy until it becomes our reality. The truth is, a natural loner actually *needs* solitude. For me, it provides freedom from everyone else's pressure and leaves me more time to be productive. When I finally feel like socializing again, I just seek out people I actually vibe with. And honestly? A little comfort food and some peace and quiet is all you really need.👍
Try looking at this "problem" as a filter—one that only lets through people who actually matter. For every negative, there’s a positive. Most people in life are just acquaintances anyway; if you're lucky, you might end up with one, two, maybe even three real friends. This black-and-white worldview? It suggests these types of people are more individualistic—which is a massive advantage. At the end of the day, science has proven nothing more important than frequencies and nothing else.
People who stand out from the crowd in Psychology ·
I read the headline and felt right at home. My entire life has been shaped—and arguably derailed—by a perspective driven by excessive emotion; I take everything far too personally. I overthink constantly, and frankly, it’s exhausting. Sometimes my internal monologue is so intense it actually shocks the people around me—which means I have to filter myself constantly just to function. It’s a burden. If only I were a bit more simple-minded, maybe fewer things would weigh so heavily on me.

It’s a shame there aren't more simple things like this that we can do regularly to actually feel happy.😢

A real shame, indeed.

Sure, but you're missing the point—it’s about the entire ritual, and the food is just one piece of the puzzle. You have the prep work, the presentation, the atmosphere, and so on. It all symbolizes the near-total sense of autonomy a regular person can actually claim.

There is a certain satisfaction in heading up to the smoking room in the attic—just to survey my stash of artisanal smoked sausages. I’ll grab one, head down to the kitchen, and slice it up alongside five or six varieties of cheese. Once I’ve assembled the perfect platter, I’ll slice some fresh cornbread, carry it all out to the patio under the cherry tree, and settle in. This isn't about mindless eating—it's about savoring every single bite. To finish? A glass of premium, dark, caramelized stout. Now *that* is living.
