May God help me, and may He watch over all future medical students.😳

If there’s ever a petition for this, let me know!
I’ll sign it with my full name, Social Security number, and everything else you need!

There are some truly wonderful people working in our hospitals, but let's be honest, there’s also some absolute bottom-of-the-barrel behavior out there.
Unfortunately, just like in any other part of life, one terrible person can completely ruin the hard work of a hundred amazing ones.

I don't read every single post in detail because some of them honestly make my skin crawl!
ruggedscout91, what they were saying to you is basically nothing short of Nazism.
It's just pathetic.
The worst part is how hypocritical people are. They love acting like judges over who deserves decent care and treatment, but the second they find themselves in pain or needing help, they're the first ones fighting for their own lives—even though they wouldn't hesitate to leave someone else suffering in the dark.

Every other day? That sounds like quite the routine! I actually tried something similar last month when I was training for a local 5K, and let me tell you, the consistency really pays off!
Are you starting a new thread?

My wife, who's a bit older than me, has been fighting this battle alongside our son since he was 17. Her two favorite guys are both dealing with this, and she feels pretty helpless right now. I'm looking for some solid advice here for both of us, because honestly, I'm handling my own diagnosis like a total pro, you know?

There is actually a pretty massive thread dedicated to epilepsy filled with tons of posts
where patients and parents of kids with epilepsy all share their stories
you'll find all sorts of different experiences and helpful tips there!
Student tax exemptions: Who qualifies? in Health ·
casuallynx8 said:I would strongly advise against heading over to the Jefferson clinic; the crowds there are enough to make your head spin, and you likely have far more productive ways to spend your afternoon.

Medicare has a massive number of locations throughout New York City, so it might be worth looking for a spot that isn't quite so overwhelmed: . For instance, I recently visited the Jackson facility near the local sports complex.

It’s such a headache when you accidentally end up in the wrong line—it feels like everyone is staring at you! 😁
My daughter actually went through that whole nightmare of trying to deal with Medicare just two weeks ago. She was in and out of the building in literally five minutes—walked in, filled out her paperwork, and headed straight back out!

If you're living at home in New York City, you just grab a confirmation from your university and head straight to the Jefferson office to deal with Medicare!
Just a quick tip: ask at the entrance where to go! Since they have a separate line for people who aren't paying the policy fee, you don't want to end up stuck in the wrong queue for no reason.
Just a heads-up—about a week ago, two student claims came through my desk for orthopedic equipment verification!
Olivia White75 said:Have you tried calling Boise? My mom needed an MRI a little while back, and while they had her waiting two months in Seattle, they could get her in the same week in Boise! And that was all just using her standard insurance referral. I'm not sure if they have a CT scanner there, but it doesn't hurt to give them a quick ring and ask.

I gave them a call, and apparently their MRI machine won't even arrive until next spring.
Could you please check with your mom to see exactly where she went and if it was definitely an MRI?
Thanks! 🙂

It feels like such a catch-22!🙄 If you're really that unhappy with the situation, just head over to a private hospital or find one that doesn't have those university affiliations! Honestly, I had to switch to a private clinic last year for a quick checkup, and it made things so much smoother.

I honestly feel like every single hospital around here is constantly swarming with medical students! It’s like they’re everywhere you look.
Patients really do have the right to choose! It’s just common courtesy to ask them if they’re okay with students tagging along.
People say "free" healthcare isn't actually free, and they're right! I know plenty of folks who set aside a few thousand dollars every month for their coverage, so we definitely expect some real rights in return.
During my first pregnancy, they actually brought in about ten medical students just to watch me go through the labor process! It felt like a little classroom session right there in the delivery room.
I gotta say, I think you're right—it’s better to aim for that perfect middle ground, neither too much nor too little!
Honestly, I’ve just had enough of my own nonsense lately!
I honestly regret not standing my ground more when I should have! 😬
Honestly, there are definitely other situations where I wouldn't mind—like if I were seeing a rheumatologist, for example!
School vaccinations: A MUST! in Health ·
Justin Rivera17 said:Since it looks like everyone here is totally against "principles"... let me jump in as the counterpoint. 😉

Dylan, look—I think it’s just plain stupid not to get a tetanus shot. That vaccine has been around for a freaking eternity, and generations of people have basically proven it's "safe."

When I first read your post, I thought you were saying you didn't want to get this *new* vaccine. If that's the case, I am 100% behind you!!! But man, you gotta realize there is a massive difference between vaccines that have proven their "safety" over decades and these brand-new ones hitting the market. Your principle makes sense, though I'd personally prefer if you didn't use that word, since apparently "only idiots stick to principles."

Seriously ladies, you should've explained the difference between types of vaccines to the kid. And if he wants to hold onto a principle, we should be helping him figure out what that applies to, rather than being a bunch of nasty hens (no offense intended) typing stuff to an 18-year-old like, "hope you enjoy life in prison." Just paraphrasing here.

Zoe—shame on you. If anyone ever said something like that to my brother or my siblings while they were caught up in some teenage phase... they would have had a really bad time. Maybe go read a book on pedagogy; I seriously hope your job doesn't involve working with kids.

Anyway, back to the point: I got all my shots, except for the one for tuberculosis. Why? Because back in 2002, in my hometown, there were several cases of poisoning because the vaccine was handled totally wrong. Everyone in my age group who took it spent the next two years dealing with scars and pain. On the day the shots were given, I wasn't even at school, and then those "problematic, isolated cases" started popping up, so I just refused to get it. In the end, it turned out three kids hadn't gotten vaccinated—the doctor's son, the lawyer's son, and a local businessman's daughter 😁. Yeah, maybe that was a risky call, but for me, the risk of taking a botched vaccine was way higher.

I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST VACCINES THAT ARE PROVEN and used properly, but I honestly think only fools rush out to get every single new thing that hits the market. Just look at history... how many "miracle cures" ended up being things where women couldn't have kids, or kids had developmental issues...

Dylan, props to you for having a "principle," but please, get your tetanus shot (God forbid you fall off your bike onto a rusty nail and end up needing a leg amputation due to gangrene—something you could've avoided). Save the stubbornness for the stuff that promises the moon and delivers nothing.

Zoe should only feel bad if this were actually her own son.
At the end of the day, raising a kid is the parents' responsibility, not the community's or a bunch of random people on an internet forum.
So, let the parents be the ones feeling guilty
and deal with the fallout along with their principled son.
Plus, he's a high school senior, so he might already be an adult or almost there (which is probably why the parents aren't getting a lecture themselves), so he can just answer to his own conscience.
We really can't take responsibility for the choices of grown adults or try to raise them ourselves!
And hey, that young man will be heading to the polls to vote soon enough!😱
School vaccinations: A MUST! in Health ·
Noah Myers8 said:Nobody can force you. Any adult has the right to turn down any medical procedure, including vaccinations. The only thing you might have to deal with is a fine.

I totally respect where you're coming from,
but since we're all the ones footing the bill for our shaky healthcare system, I feel like people standing on principle should probably pay for those consequences out of their own pockets!
It doesn't mean

If it were actually the other way around, women would be getting shots after every single birth or miscarriage just to manage antibody levels.

How does a man decide to become an OB-GYN? in Women's Health ·
Donna Wood52 said:That's what the headline says.

I wouldn't say I'm shocked, since OB-GYN is just a medical specialty like any other. But I am genuinely curious—how does a man decide to become an OB-GYN and an obstetrician?

I can only tell you what one OB-GYN once told me
that witnessing his first birth was such a profound moment that he knew right then it was his life's calling.
The whole world just opened up for him! 😁
It sounds a little intense to me, but his entire face lights up whenever he talks about it.
And honestly, I'm certain 99.9% of them have totally pure intentions and don't associate their work with sex at all.

I don't have any connection to the medical field and would never want to go into it, but I'd much rather be an OB-GYN than a dentist!
Seriously, what actually drives people to become dentists? 😬
Honestly, those social interactions are driving me a little crazy! 😬
My mom used to work at a hospital (dealing with the same social issues), and she’d constantly have elderly folks cornering her in the hallways, trying to lecture her on what they thought were the rules...
The internet is absolutely incredible, but man, you see so much confusion in hospitals. Even with younger people who you'd assume are tech-savvy, if you tell them to just "Google it," they give you this look of pure bewilderment

Just digging and digging here!
I feel like a tiny little coal miner 😬
feralridge3 said:Where did you order yours if the wait is that long?
At Medikol, you're looking at a two to three month wait.
Earlier this year, I actually ended up paying out of pocket for an MRI, but Medicare reimbursed me because the scan confirmed the neurosurgeon was spot on.

vineyard
Well, that’s exactly what I did!
This is just a perfect example of how our healthcare system works.
Sadly, there are people who just can't navigate all these hoops—especially when nobody's willing to help guide them—and they end up stuck without the cash to pay upfront at places like Medikol while waiting for a refund.
I definitely know what all those different prescriptions mean
but how are you supposed to handle things like in the opening thread? When a specialist writes you a script but you can't just sit around waiting for a shift change to catch the doctor, so you leave your money at the pharmacy only to end up empty-handed

Honestly, I don't even want to get into the whole healthcare costs debate right now
But for the last six months, I've been "visiting" my neurologist, and every single month my appointment gets pushed back. Yesterday, I showed up at the clinic at 10:00 AM, scheduled for 11:00, only for the lady to have already headed home because she decided she wasn't busy enough
She runs her own practice, has a huge pile of patients booked, and she just bailed???? She decided there wasn't enough work to do???? Despite all of us sitting right there by the counter with a full sign-in sheet?????
I work in corporate finance, mostly dealing with paperwork, and I have never—not once—walked away from a job or a meeting just because I felt like it, nor have I ever shown up for a meeting only to have the other party completely ghost me
This was my third time having to take a day of vacation and spend money on gas, and it feels like such a slap in the face
Not just to me, but to a whole crowd of people
My next appointment isn't until October 29th.
Maybe we'll actually manage to see each other before the year is out!😬

This time, I actually agreed to see a substitute doctor instead.
Seriously, I haven't seen someone that arrogant, rude, and totally indifferent in a long time

And that, right there, is where 15% of our paychecks go down the drain
I’m a finance person, so I understand numbers and business models, and I get that the healthcare system is in debt, but they sure are quick to hand out those kinds of payouts
Yet when it comes to actual investments or equipment that gets bought but never used... we don't hear a peep about that...😁

My solution is to just go to a private specialist. But even if it sounds selfish, I feel like I’m entitled to some decent service after paying into this tiny little fund for 25 years (my salary is decent, and the amount I contribute to insurance could probably pay some people's entire monthly wages). Luckily, I can afford it, but most people simply can't

Oh, and yeah, I've been holding an appointment for an MRI since April 30th, 2010.😁
Thank God I only have multiple sclerosis; if I had a brain tumor, I could have passed away six times over by April 30th

Sorry, fadedmarlin402,
I just got a bit carried away by all this!😁
fadedmarlin402 said:I really hope someone takes a lesson from this example.

And what would that be?
Are we supposed to just show up to any doctor without checking our coverage and knowing the costs beforehand?
Unfortunately, for some people, $50 massive amounts of money (setting aside the whole debate over universal healthcare) are on the line, so I think it's only fair to give them a heads-up.
Is sleeping in socks weird? in Health ·
Megan Rodriguez78 said:And honestly, if someone spends years just sleeping in socks instead of actually seeing a doctor to fix their circulation, they clearly need a serious reality check.

It feels like circulation issues are constantly brushed off with advice like "just get used to it, everyone deals with this" 😁
or "just wait until you hit puberty, or menopause, or..."
I always joke that the safest bet is just to wait for a massive storm to hit—that’s when all those little aches finally disappear! 😁
