steeleagle2 said:K-Lite is honestly great if you're still rocking Windows XP—it really hits that sweet spot there—but for anyone running Windows Vista or Windows 7, you're definitely better off looking elsewhere! Hey! Oh, and don't forget—there's an additional file specifically for x64! Click!.
Everything you need—absolutely everything—is sourced right here from this page!If you're looking to get your media playback sorted out—seriously, if you've ever sat there staring at a video file that just refuses to play properly—you really need to check this out: http://shark007.net/win7codecs.html It’s basically a lifesaver for anyone running Windows 7. I know, I know, sometimes these codec packs can feel like a bit much, but this specific one is quite the essential tool—it's almost like having a Swiss Army knife for your media player! Whether you're using VLC Media Player or trying to make things work seamlessly within the standard Windows environment, having these codecs installed just makes everything... smoother? There—I said it! It saves so much headache when you're just trying to watch a movie after a long day. Definitely worth a click if you want to avoid those annoying "format not supported" pop-ups. Happy watching!

Just a quick heads-up for anyone trying this—you’ll want to uninstall every single codec you currently have installed first. It’s super important! Once you’ve given the system a good restart, go ahead and install the x86 version (that's the first link in the list) and then just add the x64 plugin right after... and voilá! You're all set!🙂

Oh, one more thing! Before you dive too deep into the settings, try testing out a bunch of different video formats first. You know, grab an .avi, maybe a .wmv if you have one lying around, or even some DivX and MKV files. If the issue persists regardless of which format you throw at it—then we’re likely looking at a configuration problem with your graphics card settings. Honestly, just go ahead and install those codecs I mentioned; they are absolutely fantastic. Everything runs flawlessly on my end—well, except for one specific codec, but that’s getting a bit into the "Professional" weeds and I don't want to bore you with the technicalities!

Thanks a million!
The thing is—and this is driving me a little crazy—the picture quality looks absolutely stellar in Real Player, but then I switch over to BS Player and it’s just... well, it's a total disaster!
So, at the end of the day—just like that one guy mentioned earlier—you just set everything up, fire up VLC Media Player (using those standard default codecs), and honestly? It works like a charm so far! I’m definitely going to take a closer look at what you sent over, because my neighbor is actually dealing with the exact same headache, though he hasn't quite jumped into tinkering with it yet... mind you, he is running x86 Windows 7.

Look, here’s my foolproof routine—I strip out every single codec I have, absolutely everything... then I wipe all my players (like KM Player or VLC Media Player) and give the whole machine a good reboot. After that, I install ONLY VLC Media Player along with its specific codecs, leaving things like the K-Lite Codec Pack completely out of the equation. Just the player and its native stuff... and wouldn't you know it? The picture comes back perfectly fine!

Lmao, I’ve been dealing with this exact same headache—just can't seem to shake it... I actually ended up switching over to VLC Media Player, which honestly feels way more solid than VLC Media Player (which is starting to feel pretty mediocre lately).

Jack Garcia said:Just wipe Windows and start fresh with a clean install—there's no way you're running into this many glitches all on your own without something being broken deep down.

🙏🙏🤣 Ah, the classic "just give me the Wi-Fi" generation, huh?

Look for something like video Rendeless under the video settings—it’s a bit fuzzy in my mind right now—and then just switch it over to blabla9 (I can't quite recall the exact name, but I know there’s a number 9 in there somewhere! 😁 )
Windows 7 in Software ·
Honestly, I’ve never run into a single issue with codec packs before.
I even tried making my own custom pack—tried running everything totally bare, nothing worked... then I tried adding those codecs from VLC, and still, the exact same result...
Everything runs flawlessly on xpu, though...

Noah Sanchez39 said:Then... Download it! Go ahead—get it! So, I’ve been diving down a bit of a rabbit hole lately—you know how it goes!—thinking about those elusive 64-bit "codecs" specifically tailored for Windows 7 64-bit. It’s one of those little technical puzzles that seems simple enough until you actually start digging through the files, right? Anyway, just wanted to throw this out there for anyone else currently wrestling with media playback on their 64-bit setups! 🙄

Well, I mean—I'm pretty sure I mentioned earlier that both of them are actually 64-bit versions... and yeah, over here in the States, they definitely come in 64-bit!

I've run into a bit of a headache with my codec setup.
On my old Windows XP x86 32-bit machine—running K-Lita—the picture quality is absolutely stellar. But now that I've moved over to Windows 7 64-bit and installed the K-Lita pack, the video quality is just... well, it's atrocious! It looks like every single pixel is actually a giant 5x5 block of color—just total pixelation everywhere. I mean, if I'm sitting about 12 feet back on the couch, I might not even notice it, but if I actually want to sit down at my desk and enjoy a movie, it’s practically unwatchable. 😢

You really think so...

Haha, half the software I run keeps flagging that—even Skype is acting up about it! 🙂

Well, shoot—it looks like I've hit a bit of a snag! I went looking through my settings, but unfortunately, I don't see a "Power Management" tab anywhere to be found. 😢

I've seen quite a few people complaining about this exact issue when they use those boards..

Yep, it's definitely an Asus board.

It’s the exact same thing over here...
So, basically, Windows goes through its whole "shutting down" routine—you know, doing all the digital housekeeping—but then the actual machine just refuses to quit! It stays running, even though there's absolutely no signal going to the monitor. All the fans are spinning away, and that little LED indicator light is still glowing like everything is totally fine. But when I hit the power button to try and force it off? Nothing happens at all—well, except for that weird little response after about 4 seconds.

restlessangler said:It’s a classic point of confusion when moving between Vista and 7.
Don't just go to Start/ and look for the power icon there—instead, click that little right arrow at the very bottom-right corner of the menu, and that's where the options pop up including the Shut down command.

Hopefully that does the trick! Honestly, I’ve had to explain to all my new users—whether they're on Vista or, as of today, 7—that the logic is just a bit different.

I definitely learned that lesson the hard way myself, haha!

Thanks for the tip, but I'm totally missing the mark here. 😁
Here is a screenshot of the details...

edit: you can do what restlessangler suggested, but this link might help you set it so it defaults to shutdown automatically...

Unfortunately, that wasn't it either...

Is this some kind of software glitch, or could we be looking at a hardware issue?!

Noah Sanchez39 said:Have you given the settings in Control Panel \ Hardware and Sound \ Power Options a shot yet? It might be worth a look! 🤔

I haven't touched a single thing in there—honestly, I've left everything exactly as it was—but looking at it now, everything seems to be running smoothly! My only real hiccup is that the monitor keeps cutting out on me... though, thankfully, the computer itself isn't trying to go into sleep mode or anything like that. Just a little bit of a weird quirk with the screen!
Windows 7 in Software ·
I could really use a little hand here 😁
So, I’ve got Windows 7 installed on my machine, but whenever I go to Shut down -> Shut down, the computer just slips right into sleep mode... It refuses to actually power off! It's honestly ridiculous—I'm basically stuck using the old-school method of just smashing the physical power button!
Does anyone have any advice or a fix for this? Thanks a bunch!
James Morris4 said:First off, there are plenty of specialized forums for GPUs where you can hang out and get advice.
Secondly, yeah, it's totally worth it—the ATI Radeon HD 4870 is a solid card, you won't be disappointed.

Well, first of all, I've already joined those communities and started hanging out...
And secondly, thanks so much!
Hey there!
I could really use some help picking out a new graphics card.
My budget is sitting right around $400.
The closest thing I've found so far is this Sapphire AMD Radeon HD 4870—it’s got 1GB of DDR5 and supports DVI and HDTV. Is it actually worth grabbing?!

Also—does anyone happen to know the actual difference between HDMI and HDTV? Just trying to wrap my head around it!

Thanks a bunch!

goldenwalker42 said:The away goals rule matters. It shouldn't be scrapped. There’s still such a massive gap between playing at home versus being on the road. If you get rid of it, every visiting team will just park the bus. Even with the rule in place, Chelsea showed zero attacking intent at Camp Nou. Imagine how much worse it would be without it. Every single team would play purely defensive when traveling.

We can't have more than three substitutions. Too many changes during friendlies just dilutes the quality of the game.

Just because we're layering tech onto the game doesn't mean football actually gets better. It's rarely that simple.
Turns out even "smart" tech isn't exactly foolproof.
Reviewing replays mid-match is a dangerous game. Once a ref gets caught making a mistake on screen, they lose all authority with the players, the coaches, and the crowd instantly. It makes finishing the game smoothly nearly impossible; after that first blunder, every single call is going to be met with hostility. A referee needs to maintain total control from start to finish. This isn't tennis. In tennis, you can just flip a call and move on, but the atmosphere in an American stadium is a completely different beast.

Reducing the number of players on the field would just kill the tactical depth of the game. Eleven is the magic number. You need four in the backline, and any serious club needs at least one defensive anchor in the midfield, leaving five for the attack—assuming you aren't playing with overlapping fullbacks. The pitch is too wide; if you cut the roster, organizing a decent defense becomes impossible. We’d end up with endless 5-3 or 7-4 shootouts. That isn't real soccer. It’s not just about scoring goals; it's about organized, disciplined defending, not some frantic track meet where every other play ends in a goal.

The changes I’d make...

We need to cap clubs that rely on home-grown talent for at least 70% of their roster. That includes anyone coming up through the academy without having signed a pro deal elsewhere first. Just my two cents.

Putting officials behind the goal line. Seems like a way to make calling fouls on set pieces, box entries, or goal-line decisions any easier. Just more eyes for the same old mess.

I have to disagree here. If you've got a top-tier official, they’ll make the right calls. I really don't care about their "authority" if they're blowing calls like some amateur! Honestly, I think bad decisions impact the fans way more than any potential video correction ever would.

Personally, I’m all for adopting a system similar to what we see in hockey or football. You’ve got those replay monitors right by the center of the field—allowing the official to actually verify if they made the right call instead of just guessing. Plus, in American football, every coach gets one or two challenges per game to contest a ruling. It just adds a layer of fairness that's hard to argue with!
