Joseph Taylor11 said:And just one more thing: I lived through '91 too... and I don't remember the entire country being under lockdown or everyone getting stuck within their tiny county lines (even though back then—just as a reminder—those counties basically only covered four modern-day neighborhoods plus the city!!).
So seriously—now is really not the time for war stories.
All we're waiting for now is for the old political factions to start clashing again... so we can finally figure out which way the wind is blowing.
(But honestly, I'm done talking about it... I always end up getting sucked into these debates... but if they didn't teach me how to think for myself, jbte, what was the point?...)

Of course it was; during those alerts, you weren't allowed to go anywhere...

And again, I'm not talking about war stories—I'm talking about how people managed to survive even worse crap during much harder times...

Like when you couldn't see or hear a single soul for weeks on end...

Nowadays, in this age of technology, you’ve got video calls and everything else you could possibly need...
Charles Fox10 said:I file my paperwork with the FBI every year like clockwork. I'll be there for three months, and there’s no reason to change that routine this summer.

I’d probably grab the GPS myself, even in the dead of night, if things really got messy.😁

Thermal imaging, Charles Fox10—it’s not like the old days where you just kill the lights and paddle a boat around...

To be honest, I’ve pretty much given up on my usual summer setup. Every year I spend six to eight weeks out on Murter or the Kornat islands, but this year? I’m terrified none of that is happening...

Maybe Kornat might still be on the table, but Murter—given everything going on right now—I don't want to mess around... especially not with the kids, since one of them has dealt with serious respiratory issues in the past...

I don't know, I stay in touch with my folks, and when my old man—whose colleagues in the medical field can't find a single positive thing to say after talking amongst themselves—is looking at everything through such a pessimistic lens, I’m certainly not feeling much more optimistic than he is...

My first theory was that everything would stabilize by April 15th... but seeing how this is unfolding, June 15th isn't even a sure bet...

How this is going to hit the economy and how the "average" person is actually going to stomach it—man, it scares me just thinking about it.
Jack Cook7 said:They’re probably just watching the main intersections or something.

One way or another, they must have had to pull people from somewhere else, especially since they were already spread thin dealing with border security and migrants.

Main intersections? Give me a break, man, there's nobody out there...

Everyone is obsessed with watching footage from Washington, D.C., or ST, and the main highway entrances... but nobody ever mentions the backroads... the ones cutting through the hills and valleys...

There isn't a government on Earth capable of controlling everything or covering every single road...

Especially not in the bigger cities, where the locals know all the shortcuts and side streets better than any cop ever could...

To actually control everything, you'd need the military, and even then, you have to wonder how much of a mess that would actually be...
Joseph Taylor11 said:Look, I wasn't even talking about being separated from a partner—because of this and that government (among other things), I've actually been distanced from him for months already—but that’s not what we're discussing here.

My point was that it’s absolutely insane that you can't even get into an HONEST grocery store!

And regarding that bolded part—if it lasts until early June—well, considering this all kicked off on March 23rd... that doesn't exactly look like "a couple of weeks" to me... and I know others feel the same way too...

But fine... I don't really have anything else to add to this topic—I'm just waiting to see how things play out. I see some people are already starting to crack after just one week... so I'm genuinely curious. Sometimes I hate being right—but I'm worried I might actually be right this time.

Again, I'm not trying to insult anyone, but if someone "cracks" after a single week just because they haven't seen someone, you really have to wonder what's going on upstairs...

Because what happens when life, God forbid, hits you even harder than this...

Do you immediately jump under a train or start doing stupid stuff?
Jessica Booth48 said:I agree. My partner is from 12 miles, a different municipality and a different county. I understand they claim this ban is for our own good, but something feels off. If they aren't issuing permits, why has the police force banned changing your residence? Specifically, we are renovating a house and living together, but due to work obligations (I have to work), I have to return to my registered address because I can't get a permit to be up there, yet they won't let me update my residency status.

So, what exactly were you waiting for before finally making the change?
Jack Cook7 said:I don't know, I was just guessing based on how things went down in Canada. We don't exactly have cops to throw around like confetti either. If they had to set up checkpoints in every single municipality to check passes, they had to pull those people from somewhere. Plus, there's the usual grind—we've already had a few robberies in Washington, D.C. (caught immediately, though).

Honestly, news about migrants just totally vanished from the media once everything started shutting down due to the epidemic.

Right now, there are about a hundred officers stuck in quarantine, so you can bet that number is going to climb.

Checkpoints? Please. Most of the roads are completely unmonitored...

Take today, for example—between Karlovac and Dug Resa, I didn't see a single patrol... yesterday was the exact same story.

During the week, they were only at one single location; the other four spots where you enter those cities on that route? Nothing.

In the entire K County area, they only had twelve checkpoints active...
electricbadger89 said:I'm with you on that.

I'm betting this lasts through June, maybe even longer.

Look, folks, and I really don't mean to offend anyone here, but honestly—how old are you people?

And more importantly, how "tough" do you think you actually are when things truly go south?

This current situation is nothing compared to what life can actually throw at you. People start whining immediately—talking about causing chaos, smashing through blockades, running from the police... it's ridiculous.

And this is coming from someone who basically admits they wouldn't even defend their own country, yet would somehow pull out all the stops if it involved a woman...

Absolute joke...
Joseph Taylor11 said:When I brought this up before, I got pretty chewed out by some people on here. So now, I mostly just lurk. I read everything, but I stay quiet. Still, I felt like I really needed to make this point.

It’s not about getting torn apart...

Look, nobody is claiming it's easy to be detached... but given how technology works these days, it’s a whole lot easier than it used to be...

It’s not like you have elderly folks who are immobile and left without any care... we aren't talking about not seeing a girlfriend for a couple of weeks...

So really, what are you so afraid of?
Jack Cook7 said:The Canadians have pulled most of their police away from the border with America to deal with things happening in Austria and Italy because of this epidemic. Since they left the border facing us totally wide open, they had to pass some law giving the military temporary extra powers just so they could send them out to our border.

I bet it’s the exact same story here; a huge chunk of the police have been moved elsewhere from the Canada border, so migrants are probably just wandering around freely right now. It’s just that those "democratic" news outlets got the memo to stay quiet about it. No news, no problem, right?

Where exactly was the police presence pulled from?

Can you give me an actual example?

And what's the reasoning behind it?

Shift schedules have been tweaked slightly because they're terrified of the virus getting into the system, so some people are basically on standby while on vacation... but there's absolutely no talk about pulling people off the border...
hollowtrucker77 said:Tell you what, let's go for a little stroll out in the field together and place a bet on whether we actually run into someone who shouldn't be there.
😉
Or maybe you actually know exactly how much our border is covered and protected?

Look, the chances of bumping into someone are always there...

But the whole "mass influx" thing isn't what it used to be...

And now the police actually have more time to comb through the rest of the border when nobody is showing up at the GP...
George Murphy12 said:Yeah, exactly—meat, chicken, frozen stuff... they just don't have it. 😁

I don't obsess over every cent or every sale, and honestly, considering gas prices are $4.00 it's better to just head out and buy what you need. Between the small grocery list and the price of produce, the gas cost pays for itself pretty damn fast because you actually have options. You don't have to settle for whatever random crap is on the shelf just because it's there.
Bottom line: in a big city, you've got choices. In a tiny rural town? You don't. More people means a higher chance of catching something...

But then again, cities have those specific restrictions—limited crowds in the stores, those two-meter lines waiting outside the shops... pharmacies are the same way...

Just watch your step with everything...

What's the actual vibe in the stores? What are people saying? Even the big-box retailers don't seem to have much meat left... or take something like German dough, crepes, or breadcrumbs for example...

I don't know, personally, we buy our meat directly from people we trust who raise it out on a farm... none of this processed stuff from corporate centers or whatever...

If it were easy, it would be... but hey, that's just how things are these days...

Thanks for the heads-up—didn't realize that...

And apparently, arguing with people and dealing with the spam is just part of the daily grind here...

You're completely off-topic.

You haven't actually linked what the Crisis Team is doing to those video clips of yours.

I'm definitely not watching that right now.

Interesting.

Honestly, your post isn't helping the discussion at all—it’s just a distraction from the actual topic.

But now I'm wondering—did you show up here just to pick a fight with me, or do you actually believe the Crisis Team is working in your best interest?
George Murphy12 said:You folks living in the city have it easy because you can just hit up a Target or a Walmart and actually have options.
Try to get that people in tiny rural towns with maybe two corner stores to their name don't have a choice... they buy what's there and that's that. No complaining about prices or selection when you're just trying to grab whatever's on the shelf to survive.
Then there's the permits—if you even get one approved, it's for a three-hour window once a week, and half the time they reject you anyway because they claim those two local shops are "enough"... good luck surviving weeks on that limited crap and those insane markups.

Basically, houses are miles apart and nobody talks to each other, plus the population is tiny. In the city, you go where you want, shop where you want, and at least there are plenty of people and actual variety in the aisles.

You aren't spending "way" more money; you're just spending more, which isn't the same thing...

I mean, what choice are you really looking for? Bread, dairy, meat, deli stuff, maybe some canned goods if that's your thing—you can find all of that anywhere.

I get your point, I really do, but now isn't exactly the time to be obsessing over whether something is a dollar or two cheaper somewhere else...

If we're going to play that game, you might as well factor in the cost of gas it takes to drive all the way into the city to hit those big retailers...
Kyle Nelson2 said:They locked down their states. They shut down Lombardy, which has like 10 million people, but they did it everywhere else too.
Down here, they basically locked down every tiny little town... that's just a totally different situation.

Exactly...

The reason we shut everything down was so we wouldn't end up following their exact playbook...

I don't see what part of that is confusing.

And now you're telling me you're having issues with your cable signal and TV reception?

Trying to drag the IT sector into this whole mess while things are spiraling over there—well, that's just pure, unadulterated nonsense...
Kenneth Jones70 said:Look, this isn't the time for war stories or acting like a know-it-all.

I'm looking at this from the perspective of being grateful to everyone who fought for the freedom and rights that allow these mobsters to keep us indebted for the next 1,000 years.

So, this thread isn't about war stories. Honestly, if a war broke out today, I'd be the first one out of the country—I'm smart enough to realize there's no sense in throwing my life away for this homeland. That’s just how it is for a young guy focused on his job, his money, his investments, and his future.

If you were half as smart as you think you are, you'd see that nothing special is actually happening here.

For every doomsday scenario being written, there's evidence that completely shuts it down.

The virus spreading? Look—first off, I have a cousin living with her boyfriend who tested positive and already recovered.

They didn't even test her because they said they were waiting for symptoms—that there weren't enough tests available.

They didn't test everyone she had contact with either—her family with two little kids and a chronic patient.

And what? Are you going to lecture me again about that famous flu that supposedly kills everyone?

If it were true, they would have tested everyone who was exposed.

It’s not about the symptoms—it’s about the virus spreading through people who are infected but have no idea, or won't even show symptoms at all.

It’s like everyone thinks if we didn't get sick, it just means we caught the bug but our immune systems—you know, the MVPs—just shut it down before it could even start.

Anyway, there goes a few minutes of my life I'll never get back—spent replying to you when you clearly weren't looking for an answer.

Listen, let’s clear the air—nobody here ever talks about actual war stories. If I actually started diving into what things were really like back then, you probably wouldn't get a wink of sleep. Honestly, if you're the kind of sensitive soul who gets worked up just thinking about someone being out of sight for a little while, you’d be running straight to the cops or trying to bust through police blockades at the first sign of trouble. You just aren't built for this stuff.

Honestly, I can't say I'm surprised by your take—it’s not exactly groundbreaking. We saw plenty of people acting just like this back during the early '90s—folks who were more concerned with looking out for their own skin than actually standing up for any real principles or bigger ideals. It’s the same old story, really.

People like you aren't ever going to get people like me—and honestly, I’m not sure we even want to. It’s just one of those things.

Look, I get it. I was eighteen once too—just a kid, really—living abroad when everything kicked off. And then, suddenly, I found myself back home, stepping up to defend my own country.

And no, I wasn't crying just because I won't be seeing someone for a while...

Nothing special? Just the usual.

Having some trouble with your internet connection or your cable signal?

Are you not getting the photos from Italy, Spain, or France?

Don't you ever just feel that sheer, overwhelming desperation coming off their medical staff? It’s palpable.

Look, I guess you’re probably tied up with something—or maybe just too busy to actually make time to see anyone...

And people should just drop dead if anyone dares to claim this isn't a big deal... honestly.

Honestly, it’s just painful watching how people can be this clueless and uninformed when we literally have the entire internet at our fingertips...

Yet here we go again, with more nonsense claiming this is just like the flu...

The R0 for the flu is around 1.4 to 1.7—but the R0 for this crap is pushing 4...

By all means, feel free to show me some photos or videos where "just the flu" causes this kind of total meltdown in the healthcare system or carries this much mortality...

Ten percent of the dead in Italy—and you're out here rambling about the flu...
Kyle Nelson2 said:What's the actual difference between your stories and those tales soldiers used to tell their kids just to teach them discipline?

Back then, there was always just a small group of people on the front lines while the rest of the country tried to live as normally as possible.

Right now, it feels like the entire country is stuck in the trenches on the front line.

Actually, it's not even the whole country yet—it's the doctors and medical staff who are really on the front lines right now...

Once they get overwhelmed, that’s when we should probably start looking at what’s happening in Italy and Spain to see how bad things are getting over there...

The reason I brought up war is because, back then, you’d head off for long stretches without any of this modern tech to keep you connected...

Your comparison misses the mark, though, because during wartime, there were parts of America that the conflict didn't touch—places that could still function perfectly fine...

Today isn't like that. Today, everyone is vulnerable.
Kenneth Jones70 said:What "few weeks"? They pushed through an indefinite mandate that basically tramples on civil rights.

Same here. I don't have the energy or the will to waste my time on people like that. Honestly, they seem pretty heartless.

There's a massive difference between saying, "Look, a 14-day lockdown, then we move on," and making some mindless decision that stays indefinitely.

They could have just put the whole state under quarantine for 14 days—everyone on paid leave—with the government covering the wages for those two weeks.

That would actually be cheaper than the economic disaster this is going to turn into.

I'm sending an email tomorrow—just saw another member's comment too—and I'm looping in the President's office and CCing all the major news outlets.

I'm pissed, not gonna lie. Let's see who's actually speaking up.

EDIT: Though I'm sure they'll just hide behind that "protecting public health" excuse.

Whatever—they still need to make this workable.

But you aren't even complaining about the economy—you're just upset because you can't go see someone...

That is a completely different issue; the economy is moving along as well as it can...

But, since you brought up the economy...

If the government shut down all the potential hotspots—restaurants, bars, various shops and small businesses—and limited how many people can be in places like grocery stores, pharmacies, or repair shops, then why on earth are they allowing people to travel dozens of miles and potentially spread the virus?

Are you guys seriously not watching what's happening in the UK, Spain, or France?

This isn't about being heartless; it's just how things are right now...

They’re even patrolling the maritime borders now, Charles Fox10... I was just talking to some folks over on Martha's Vineyard yesterday, and apparently, things are being "reorganized" down there right now.😬

The problem is, a group with similar ideas tried this before, and it didn't exactly go well...

Look, there are some of us who spent three or four weeks at a time out in the Appalachians or near the Rockies back in the '90s—while snipers were popping off and grenades were flying all around us, much to the delight of the local kids...

And we did it without any connection to our families... because technology basically didn't exist, and I won't even get into the other reasons for that...

But you people? In this era of high-speed internet, smartphones, and endless apps, you think being alone for a little while is some kind of crisis...

If things actually got real—if you had to dodge the police or bust through blockades—you’d be running.

I agree, there's no point in this debate. You honestly have no clue what actual shit looks like—especially when your mother or your wife is waiting at home, praying you actually show up alive...

Or what it feels like every single time you say goodbye before heading to a post where you won't be back for weeks...

Or going back out into the field for the first time after being wounded, trying to deal with the chaos in your own head while watching your mother refuse to let go of your hands...

There are things you haven't experienced, and you should just thank whatever Bog you believe in that you didn't have to.

This is a minor issue that can—and must—be fixed...

Nobody said it would be easy, but the sheer amount of pathetic whining here is getting a bit much... especially considering everything modern technology provides.

That was quite the introduction.

I mean, I honestly don't get why there was all that wall of text before—it feels like it had absolutely zero connection to that last point you just made.

Honestly, this is just peak behavior—go ahead and bait someone into a conversation, stir the pot just to see the reaction, and then when it’s actually time to answer the question, suddenly you've got nothing to say. Classic.

I honestly don't think you quite grasp the scale of it—how much of our legal framework in the States is still just these ancient, frozen laws left over from the old days of the USA. It’s wild, really.

Maybe this topic is just getting a little too heavy for you to handle?

Is there actually a single post from him lately where he isn't either obsessing over his interlocutor or just straight-up baiting them? It feels like a constant loop—either he’s nitpicking someone else's argument or he's just throwing out provocations to see who bites. Honestly, I can't recall a single instance recently where he wasn't being intentionally difficult just for the sake of it.

P.S.

And all of this because he had the nerve to mention that we’re still stuck with some outdated laws left over from the old USA days. Once a few people here actually asked him to back that up, the whole thing just spiraled—total spin, dodging the question, and then trying to make it all about the person asking instead of the actual facts. Typical.
