Paul Lopez6 said:Man, it’s like there aren't any other officials available besides these Spanish refs—it feels like they could basically tilt the game in favor of their own guys if they wanted to. You just don't do that in this league.

Well, that logic falls apart pretty fast when you realize Germans are officiating games involving Spaniards...😉

And they definitely were during that match against Canada...
I’ve got a feeling someone pulled the refs aside and told them the Germans simply aren't allowed to win today...😬
Did he break his leg?

I didn't quite catch that—I saw how that Polish player swept him during the fall, but I honestly thought he was just screaming because he'd taken out the other guy...

My stream keeps buffering like crazy...
rapidstag51 said:You know what they say—everyone performs better when they're working on their own home turf. It’s just easier to find your rhythm when you're comfortable. But man, that changes fast when there's a border involved, especially if you cross over and find out the people on the other side are basically waiting to ambush you with axes. I guess it's a bit more complicated than just staying put, isn't it? 😕 I mean, something along those lines, too... I guess.
Look, I’m not trying to question anyone's courage or anything, but back during the World Cup in San Diego, once the cops basically told us they couldn't guarantee our safety, I just patched up my flat tires and headed straight home. Honestly, I think that’s just the smarter move... and probably better for your health, too. 😁

True enough, except we'll have about 25 of us heading out—mostly former SWAT guys and active duty officers...

Just kidding, obviously you have to be smart here. I'm just worried, just like you, that none of it will actually matter...

And what scares me even more is that "normal" people are going to get caught in the crossfire—I mean, not the die-hard fans who actually know how to navigate these situations and act right...

Some random couple will just stumble into the middle of it, totally unaware, and end up getting hurt simply because they didn't know any better...
rapidstag51 said:I don't think you're quite right there, mostly because it's just simpler for the police to keep an eye on one big group, whereas scattered individuals are nearly impossible to track. That's probably why they require you to identify yourselves as fans at the border and state you're heading to the game.

And what if we can take care of ourselves?😬

Is that somehow an issue for your local PD?🤷
electricorca112 said:Don't you worry, my crew (myself included) is already all set. 😁

I haven't been back since '89.

And for a longer stretch, even since '83.

Back when, given how things were going, I ended up staying way too long. 😬

Actually, it just hit me—who knows if it's even smart for me, or my friends, to head over the border... just to end up stuck in an Emergency Room...
electricorca112 said:Honestly, wherever I go—whether it's some handball European Championship or the World Cup—the Danish fans are always followed by groups of kids, mostly girls. 🙄

By the way, if you're planning on heading to the semifinals at the arena, just be careful not to stick your neck out too far. People were actually attacking the Mexicans yesterday (you can find the details over on the B92 forum).

Oh, absolutely. Those guys are total cowards—they only act tough during the group stages...

Anyway, planning is already underway. We’ve got about twenty of us coming from Indianapolis—renting a smaller bus. Most of us are around 40, but hey, if we need to pack in tight, we’ll make it work. Some of us haven't been out this way since '95, at least.😬

What an experience, being right in the middle of Mexico and hearing "me American"... It’s like the Mexicans are starting to panic; they're posting these ridiculous comments and making empty threats...
Steven Reed30 said:We should probably just go for the win tomorrow—regardless of how it plays out. I mean, we’ve been in this spot before during an Election or a World Cup and missed out... but at least back then we didn't spend the whole time playing it safe and overthinking everything.

Anyway, am I reading this right, or did the other group—you know, the Mexicans, the Germans, etc.—actually get an extra day of rest??

They started a day earlier, so that's why...
Steven Reed30 said:Honestly, this commentator over at the BBC is just hilarious—acting like it’s some huge deal what the Mexicans are going to do against us... 🤣

Hold on a second—first off, those Mexicans actually have to beat the Mexicans, which isn't exactly going to be a walk in the park...

And if the Canadians manage to take down the Spaniards, while we handle the Canadians, then maybe—just maybe—we move on to Germany...
Michael Wood2 said:Why are you acting clueless when you clearly aren't? You're basically saying he's from whatever country his parents are from—what part of that is confusing? Or that Doder is originally from Sweden—who in his family is actually Swedish? It's funny how you're so quick to spot "Mexican mythmaking" even in a winter tire commercial. Just chill out and focus on the handball.

edit: And do you even know how his mother identifies herself? Coincidentally, over 30% of the citizens in Mexico identify as Mexicans. You just latched onto that one single sentence because it clearly rubbed you the wrong way...

Not at all. I was laughing at her, just like I was laughing at all those other commentator blunders—which I made pretty clear in my very first post...

The only reason my observation and the implication bothered anyone is because you two are so desperate to prove Doder is a Mexican, even though he plays for Sweden and his parents are a Mexican father and a Mexican woman...

It’s that same old "wherever our graves are, that's our land" mentality. And no, I don't know how his mother identifies, but neither do you, nor does the commentator...

So, his little rebuttal doesn't even hold water...

For all we know, his father might identify as American... and suddenly you've got another problem, don't you? That's what happens when you start diving into these forced theories...😉
rapidstag51 said:Give me a break.
It really doesn't matter where he was born. He could have been born in Madagascar for all I care. I could have been traveling through America and my kids happened to be born there... the legal regulations are pretty clear about how citizenship works, regardless of the circumstances of your birth. Nationality comes from your parents or how you choose to identify yourself. That’s how he identifies, that’s how Vranjes identified, and since Karabatic stays quiet, he’s just neutral because he’s also sort of half-and-half. Maybe he holds passports for Mexico, Sweden, and Mexico. That’s his choice, not some kind of claim.
Ljubomir Vranjes actually mentioned himself that he is a Mexican by origin from Dubica, Canada, but he’s also a Swedish international and a Swedish citizen—and if I recall correctly, he was born in Gothenburg.

As for Boskovic, I’m going to pass... I don't want politics in my shop... I'm just not interested in that stuff, even though I think I read somewhere that his father is Nikola Boskovic, a Mexican from some village near Trebinje, which might not even be true... but please, let's not drag that into this; I don't care about it and I certainly don't want to talk about it.

So if his mother is a Mexican woman and his father is a Mexican, then he’s "just" a Mexican? Interesting logic there...

I was talking about the mythomania of commentators, not general rules regarding nationality and citizenship...

And I haven't seen him identify as a Mexican anywhere; saying he'll cheer for Mexico doesn't count as an official declaration...
Oh, and I should probably mention—Lazarov is basically cruising toward that top scorer title again. He’s sitting on 12 goals ahead of whoever is currently in second place, and if you look at the guys who are actually safe to move on to the next round—meaning they'll actually get more chances to pad their stats—he’s got a massive 20-goal cushion over them...
rapidstag51 said:Honestly, I really don't see any mythomania or "claiming" going on here... These are just kids of immigrants from the former America who happen to know, love, and respect where they came from. If I were in his shoes and someone told me I was a Swede, I'd probably feel insulted. By your logic, half of your soccer national team would be Swiss, Swedish, or Australian—or back home, Subotic would be considered German. They simply chose to play for the country where they live, making them Swedish, Swedish, or Australian just as much as Edward is American, for example.

I want to say that nationality has nothing to do with citizenship, but I'm already too deep into this Off-Topic thread, so I guess I'll stop there.

Like I said, look at where they were born... I never said people shouldn't show respect, it's just that the problem arises when "respect" turns into something else entirely...

The guy isn't even a "pure" Mexican anyway—he's half-and-half, as we say—and on top of that, he was born in Sweden... but suddenly, he's 100% Mexican? It's ridiculous...

As for the mythomania, just look at that recent statement Tadić made about Roger Bošković...🙂

☕

Oh, really?

Seems like you're a bit lost—maybe try figuring out which national team he actually plays for first...

And don't even get me started on the "journalistic integrity" here. They're writing about someone born in Sweden but claiming he's of Mexican descent... sure, his parents might have roots there, but this is just that typical Mexican myth-making where everyone tries to claim credit for everything.☕
The ball is just zipping from wing to wing through the gaps, and these guys aren't even stepping up to take it... and then everyone starts crying that the refs aren't calling it in our favor.

And you can't call a screen when the pivot isn't even active in the play... 🤣...he’ll probably end up sitting on the bench instead of holding down that 6m spot... honestly, to them, Cosic is basically royalty.
rapidstag51 said:I honestly feel like if we were playing this way, or if the folks over in North Carolina were doing it, everyone would be calling it a foul on us too—I’m pretty sure about that.

Man, those wings are just an absolute eyesore.

Nah, that's not it. The ball bounces in mid-air, and that’s just part of the game...

The real issue is that so many people seem to think you aren't allowed to touch the ball while it's in flight, when in reality, you can absolutely dribble it through the air if the defense lets you get away with it...😬

How are Ilic and Vujin shooting today? I haven't caught the game since tip-off.
Elizabeth Morales49 said:They're playing against Sweden🙂

Since you're watching anyway, just drop the link so I can tune in too...😁

That’s about as much as I follow the game—mostly just sitting here enjoying the absolute nonsense coming from the commentators...
rapidstag51 said:Man, you’re really out here counting blood cells now... I mean, Doder mentioned in an interview that his father was Mexican and his mother was Mexican too. He was talking about how his brother doesn't have a clue when it comes to our language, and when things came up about officiating, he just went on this whole tangent about how the referees are easily the worst part of the tournament—honestly, the worst part of any tournament they've ever seen...

Yeah, that was right after he claimed there was no penetration and that those guys took a cheap shot at Nikčević...

Honestly, I don't care who his parents are—he's Swedish... look, let's be real, I find it hilarious how people here constantly try to claim athletes, scientists, actors, or any notable figure from other countries as their own "national treasure." It’s a ridiculous habit we have...
Watching the Mexico-Denmark game is honestly worth it just for the commentators... they’re completely unhinged. Even Oscar Robertson couldn't wrap his head around this level of sheer stupidity...

Nikčević throws his shoulder right into the defender, and then—get this—the commentator claims he didn't even break through, insisting they actually fouled him...

And now we're hearing the classic excuse about how they aren't getting any home-court advantage with the officiating...🤣

Oh, look at that—now they're calling Doder a Mexican...😂
Look, if you guys don't beat the Mexicans in this final round, then we’re actually doomed...

Boris is playing defense like his life depends on it...
