Are people actually good? in Psychology ·
Alright, let's keep this going... At the end of the day, what actually matters is being honest with yourself and finding some peace with who you are. When you finally reach that point, you stop giving a damn about what every idiot thinks. But when you're insecure? That's when you're trapped, constantly worrying about every moron's opinion because you haven't learned to value yourself yet. That’s my little nugget of wisdom for the day. 🙂

Look, my philosophy is pretty simple: if I give someone my heart, I expect them to show up and return the favor. That’s it. It’s not about being petty; it’s just that I have no interest in pouring energy into a void. I'm not some wide-eyed optimist who doesn't see what's happening right in front of her.
As for anyone who can't meet me halfway? They can take a hike and find somewhere else to be.
That's just how it is.

Someone does something to you that really hurts you... then later on, you get the perfect chance to get even. Are you going to take it???

I wouldn't, because then I'd just be becoming exactly like them.

And I wouldn't go crawling back to them demanding they treat me better just because I was nice to them before... I'd just walk away and let them become a complete stranger. They wouldn't mean anything to me anymore.

But I'd sleep pretty soundly knowing I didn't go out of my way to hurt anyone.

We aren't even talking about the same thing, so I don't really follow you. If someone hurts me, I settle the score. But if they offer me kindness, I return it tenfold. It's simple math. Besides, I have no idea why you find me so fascinating, considering you and your crowd haven't exactly been anything but hostile toward me.😕
You know perfectly well we don't get along, yet here you are, popping up in every single one of my threads. What's the end game?😕

William Garcia64 said:At 18, I hit a massive reality check. Before that, I lived entirely inside books and my own imagination—horrors like the Holocaust felt like distant, historical footnotes rather than actual reality. Then, it all clicked: the world isn't just populated by "good people." I realized that while most people try, there’s a dark undercurrent out there—and while that small percentage of truly malicious individuals ends up behind bars, the rest of the world is much more complicated. It took me a long time to accept that people aren't just black or white; most of us live in the gray area—I'm talking about the everyday people you pass on the street, not the absolute monsters.
Over time, I’ve built up a bit of a defense mechanism—I can even find myself being pretty harsh toward someone if I really have to (strictly as a means of self-defense, of course). As for my kindness? Honestly, I’m good to others mostly out of pure selfishness: it simply feels good to be a decent person.

Exactly. People are inherently selfish. We act kind because we expect something in return—it's standard operating procedure. Personally, I don't do things for others out of pure altruism; I do them so they'll be grateful and pay it forward. Anyone claiming they're a "saint" or a "pure soul" is lying through their teeth. Those are the first ones you'll see lash out. If a person doesn't possess a healthy dose of egoism and self-love, they're fundamentally broken. A little self-interest is actually the foundation of mental health. People who lack it either live miserable lives or end up in some dark place. That's just the logic. Clearly, some people have never learned to love themselves, so they spend their entire lives just trying to please everyone else. It's pathetic.

Steven Rivera7 said:Growing up, my folks always drilled this one rule into my head: "If someone throws a stone at you, toss them a loaf of bread instead."
Honestly, treating people that way is a total game-changer!

Sure, that sounds great on paper, but honestly? I wish I had met someone like you back in the day. In my experience, people usually start with the stones, and if they're feeling generous, they finish by throwing stale bread at your head... 😲

So, we’re basically agreeing that people aren't inherently good... and honestly, they probably aren't. Most people you encounter in passing will never show you an ounce of genuine kindness. Maybe there's goodness in those we're actually close to, but life has a way of leaving you isolated sometimes. That's when you realize just how much malice exists in everyone else. But then again, none of that really matters if you have someone you love—someone who actually gives a damn about you. If you've got that, the rest is just noise.
But once you're feeling empty, or you actually need something from someone, that’s when you see the truth: they won't lift a finger to help. I see it all the time on TV, too. You'll see someone acting vulnerable or being respectful, and instead of meeting them with empathy, people just laugh at them. It’s like everyone assumes everyone else is just as cold as they are. They see someone being kind or polite and immediately view them as an easy target for mockery or an attack. That kind of behavior belongs in a middle school hallway, not among adults. It’s pathetic.
You feel this most acutely when you're down or in trouble. That’s when you realize how few people are actually standing by your side willing to help. People tell you to just "smile more" or "stay positive," as if that's easy. Sure, anyone can fake a smile, but when you're deep in a rut, that isn't always an option.

Look, here’s my take: I approach everyone with the assumption that they’re fundamentally good. I just don't get it lately. Why does it feel like everyone is working overtime to prove they’re actually the exact opposite? It feels universal. I try to help people, point them toward what I think is their best path—I don't mind sharing a breakthrough I've worked hard on if it might make their lives easier or help them succeed. I go out of my way to smile at people. But honestly, I can't tell if society has truly devolved into this mass of selfish, malicious actors, or if everyone has just become incredibly paranoid. Every time I offer a smile, people recoil like I’m about to vomit on them. It’s a pattern: the more I need a bit of warmth, the colder and more guarded people become. Is it just me, or is this happening to everyone else too? And once you actually start talking to someone, they don't even hesitate to throw a nasty insult right in your face. I keep adjusting my attitude toward them, hoping things will shift, but it never does. Maybe I trust people too easily? Maybe I'm just being a nuisance? Regardless, I feel a total lack of respect from those around me, even at 28. Do you all feel this same disconnect from people, or am I just shouting into a void? Have people really changed this much, or is there something else broken? I struggle to find any sincerity, kindness, or genuine innocence anymore. In anyone.

scarms, check your PMs.

Thank God! You people have already exhausted me. I’ve been on this site for two months and haven't heard a single intelligent thought or anything remotely useful for my life... so... it's just a total waste of time for me here. If only I could actually resolve some complex or frustration instead.
Henry Garcia10 said:I saw her posts for the first time a few days ago. I've been away for a while, honestly. But I have no clue who she is. Some kind of clone, perhaps.

A troll? A clone? Come on, you can do better than that. What kind of insults are those? They're practically preschool level. Who am I even talking to here? This is just my own masochism acting up after a breakup.
Morgan Long49 said:@Henry Garcia10: I just wanted to ask 😕 , have you and Robert Murphy8 been messing with us all along, or was everything she said above her actual, honest opinion?

Look, we know each other—it’s all just banter. What do you mean "genuine opinion"? Is it bad? Yeah, it is. She already told me about her track record with a revolving door of guys. A total disaster.
I’m honestly surprised I haven't been banned yet. I’ve insulted enough people here to warrant a permanent lockout, it's ridiculous. These moderators are way too patient.
Henry Garcia10 said:troll😬

I'll take that as a compliment. Thanks.
Alright, I’ve finally calmed down.
Susan Harris89 said:I used to harbor those very same notions myself. However, I eventually discovered the profound utility of the ignore button 🙂

I get that, but ignoring someone doesn't actually point out how dense or moronic they're being. This way, you do. He needs to be made aware that he's nothing more than a tiny little worm.
Morgan Long49 said:If that doesn't warrant a ban, I don't know what does!
Seriously, lady, take a look in the mirror—it's pretty obvious who the one with issues is here.
Do terms like ego mechanisms, projection, negation, regression, or repression mean anything to you at all?

Just get lost and go deal with your own baggage somewhere else, you miserable amateur.
Lisa Rodriguez84 said:Look, I’ve tried every angle in the book, and honestly? I just don't hang out with those kinds of idiots who live to provoke people anymore. I keep my circle as small as necessary and that's about it.
I mean, I have a few friends who actually turned into that type of person. They used to be perfectly fine, but now? All they care about is mocking someone, throwing insults, or trying to get a rise out of people.

Well, you'll find plenty of those types on forums... especially certain mindless women. People who seem to have straw instead of brains. You run into them in real life, too. With people like that, you have to hit back three times harder. I was at Target recently and started putting my things into an empty shopping cart, when some woman comes up to tell me they were "her cart." I just gave her a calm, "Okay." Then her mother shows up, clearly looking for a fight, asking how I dared to use "their" cart. How I shut them down. I said, "Oh, excuse me! If these truly are *your* carts, please forgive my audacity for putting things in them!" I used my most biting, sarcastic tone. The looks they gave me... they realized right then they couldn't bully or mess with me. That's the kind of trash you have to meet with equal force. They actually ended up laughing afterward.
You have to give these foolish women such a sharp response that they realize exactly who they're messing with. It reminds me of when some obnoxious woman showed up at my door just to talk trash. I didn't even want to open it, but when I finally did, I let her have it with such a loud, mocking sarcasm that she hasn't dared ring my doorbell since. I can be pretty nasty when provoked. Honestly, it's quite satisfying.
Susan Harris89 said:Robert Murphy8, you know, it might be worth considering that this forum could serve as an ideal training ground for the art of ignoring others. Perhaps give it a shot.

No. My rule is simple: ignore someone if they take a shot at you once or twice. But when they start stalking you across the entire forum like some obsessed lunatic just to talk trash? That’s when you snap back and tell them to get lost. She wants to call me a troll? She should probably go take a good look in the mirror first to see what an actual troll looks like.🤣
I’m not about to sit here wasting smart takes while a few degenerates use my posts as a punching bag. They're going to feel the heat eventually.
Susan Harris89 said:In my estimation, when one encounters individuals of that particular temperament, there really isn't much room for maneuver—one can either choose to simply look the other way and ignore them entirely, or else prepare for the inevitability of an argument.

No. I've changed my mind. You have to answer people like that! And give it back to them twice as hard.
Henry Garcia10 said:Based on your very first post, I’m pretty sure you're just a troll. I didn't actually write that myself; I just repeated it after seeing firsthand that people like this really do exist and walk around our streets like everything is fine. Sucking the life out of everyone around them, of course.

And you? You're a total moron and a complete jerk—just like your profile says. A real piece of work. Honestly, I couldn't care less what some idiot thinks about me.
Morgan Long49 said:Honestly, I try my best to keep up with you, and it’s clear to me that you are easily one of the kindest, most sincere people in this entire country. It seems like you're constantly surrounded by these incredibly bitter, malicious types who just can't help themselves. They provoke you, they're disrespectful, they try to belittle you... just pure spite. It’s honestly sad to watch.
What is it they actually want from you? Why is it that everyone seems so determined to pick on you specifically?

Human stupidity is bottomless. A literal void. And online? It's an absolute wasteland of idiots. Just pure, unadulterated fools. People who offer zero value to anyone, except perhaps as a way to soothe their own fragile egos since they lack any actual virtues—not to mention they clearly lack even a shred of sense in those tiny heads of theirs. All they possess is this infinite, deep-sea level of sheer stupidity.
boldeagle3 said:I wouldn't go so far as to give you a compliment, but I might consider banning you... 🙂

As if I ever expected anything decent from this crowd. 🙂 - 🙂
