CPU overheating issues in Desktops ·
I was pretty much set on grabbing the Intel Core i7 6700K, but now I’m kind of stuck in this dilemma between that and the Intel Core i7 6800K—I guess both have their own little pros and cons. It looks like the overclocking potential on the 6800K isn't too bad compared to the 6700K, though the temperatures can get pretty high. I mostly use my PC for gaming, with just a bit of rendering here and there—not super often, really—so maybe the 6700K would actually suit me better, but I'm still feeling drawn toward the 6800K. It feels a bit silly to drop the extra cash on a 6800K only to realize a month later that I basically threw money away.

Just pointing out you're basically halfway to a Broadwell-E build with that budget.

So your setup would run about

Intel Core i7 6700K $917
Z170 Motherboard $383
That NZXT Kraken X61 cooler 1350
----------
Total=5250

While you could get a hexa-core for $333 more. For me, that's a no-brainer.

It shows how much of a waste it is to pay $333 way too much for a cooler. An Intel Core i7 Skylake isn't exactly hard to cool; you could pull some serious overclocking even with a $100 cooler.

You can push this Intel Core i7 6800K pretty far on that Noctua NH-D14, or just pick a prettier cooler if aesthetics are your priority.

edit: not halfway, more like almost there. 😲

I thought about that too, but I figured I didn't really need the 6800K since the 6700K performed better in gaming—not by a huge margin, maybe just a few FPS, but that's enough for me, I guess. Plus, I don't render videos that often, so I don't really need those extra cores. I'd rather grab a nice NZXT Kraken X61 instead of going for the 6800K, and honestly, I've been using a stock cooler for three years now, so I won't miss the pump. It might sound a little silly, but I like having a good balance of aesthetics and performance, and I'm just not a big fan of how air coolers look.

Look, I get it, really—but since I already have an NZXT case and I’ve always wanted to try liquid cooling, I think I'll just go with that one. I like for my PC to feel pretty, don't judge me 😁
Anyway, thanks for the advice 👍

I might actually grab a new cooler sometime this week—since everyone’s saying this summer is going to be the hottest one yet, and honestly, nothing beats the frustration of thermal throttling. 😁

Just wanted to get some thoughts. I've already decided on getting the NZXT Kraken X61, but since they're mostly just available at Best Buy around here, I was wondering if they're actually reliable? From what I've gathered online, they seem solid, though it feels like everyone talks about smartphones instead of actual hardware.

P.S.—before anyone comes after me for picking a cooler for a locked CPU, I'm planning to pick up a 6700K this fall, so the upgrade should definitely pay off eventually. 😛

The title pretty much gives it away—my CPU temps are hitting 96 degrees at most. I'm just running the stock cooler right now, but the thing is, they haven't always been this high. I tried swapping out the thermal paste, and I even had a buddy lend me his stock cooler for a bit—but honestly, it didn't make much of a difference. I'm planning to pick up a new cooler this fall, but I really need a fix before then—unless there's absolutely nothing else I can do, in which case I might just go ahead and buy one now.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks so much for the help—everything's been ordered!

So, what am I supposed to do about this case? Am I stuck with just an SSD? My dad really wants to keep his old hard drive in the machine since he’s got all sorts of important files on there—it's not like he's exactly thrilled about the idea of moving everything over.

Btw, from what I can see, I'll probably need to pick up one of those SSD adapters too.

Also, maybe some recommendations for an IPS monitor while we're at it? I mean, since everything is being upgraded, it might as well be a good one 😁 Something from Best Buy or maybe Amazon

Well, the day has finally arrived—my parents decided it was time for a new computer, and naturally, they asked me to put it together. Since I’m much more into overkill builds than anything budget-friendly, I figured I’d come here to pick your brains instead. They really just need the bare minimum—mostly just browsing the web, using Word, and that kind of stuff—so there's definitely no need for a dedicated graphics card. I was thinking maybe you guys could suggest an APU or perhaps an Intel's CPU with integrated graphics? One thing to note is that they don't need a hard drive, but an SSD would be a must. I guess a 60GB one should be plenty for them. Also, they did ask if the case could be pretty small, since their desk isn't exactly huge.

Thanks in advance!
Best fans for the NZXT H440? in Desktops ·
I’ve been noticing that almost everyone who picks up an NZXT H440 tends to swap out the stock fans right away—usually for some Noctua ones. I guess I'm wondering if that's actually necessary, or if it’s even worth the upgrade? I was thinking about maybe putting three 120mm Noctuas in the front and maybe a 140mm Corsair fan on the back... though I'm not really looking to drop a ton of cash on this. Just wanted to poke around and see what you guys think.

Timothy Kim60 said:I think you might be mixing this up with the request above—his signature lists an i7 2600 and a gtx 770, so an R9 380 would actually be a bit of a downgrade

feralrider92

It should hold up—it pulls about 320w at full load when paired with an i7 4770 k overclocked to 4.4ghz click—though I guess I'm not sure if spending that much on a GPU is really worth it for you, but hey, it's your money and your call

Well, I'm planning to dip my toes into 4k gaming soon, and I really want to grab something that'll last me at least four years while still running everything smoothly.

I'm planning on picking up a GTX 980 ti G1 from Gigabyte in a few months once I've saved up enough—hopefully! My main question is whether it'll play nice with my current setup? I'm mostly just worried about the power supply side of things... everything else I think I have figured out. 🙂

A buddy of mine asked if I could put together a solid 1080p build that hits 60fps—his budget is roughly $2667.

So, I pulled this together—let me know where I might have missed the mark, since I usually just go overboard with overkill builds, so this was kind of a fun little challenge for me. He’s also looking for a new case, so if you guys have any recommendations, let me know and I'll pass them along.

Just a few quick things—he specifically requested a GTX 970 so he can stay quiet and stable for the next few years, and he wants to get it from Best Buy because it's easier for warranty stuff—since he's closest to a location in Cleveland and doesn't want any headaches there—though if anyone knows of another similar shop in the Cleveland area, feel free to shout it out. 🙂

I've just got this feeling that the B75 won't really handle overclocking—but hey, it’s probably not that big of a deal anyway. I'll give it some more thought, though I'll most likely end up grabbing that cooler.
CPU Cooler Recommendations? in Desktops ·
Hey there!
Since summer is right around the corner and things are heating up, I’m looking to swap out my Intel's stock cooler on my i7 2600 (non-K version) for something better. I've been eyeing the cm Seidon 120 v (ver. 2)—I'm pretty sure it'll fit my setup, but I always like to double-check first. My specs are listed below the post, so if anyone could just let me know if this is a go, I'd appreciate it.
Also, if anyone has suggestions for a different water cooler that offers better "bang for your buck," please let me know. I'm mainly upgrading because my CPU temps tend to spike quite high—hitting around 90 degrees—so maybe I didn't apply the thermal paste quite right, or something? Either way, I want to upgrade so I can try a little bit of overclocking.

Thanks in advance!
Windows Sierra Ralink Wi-Fi utility in IT Support ·
I'm running into a bit of a snag on Sierra with this Ralink wireless utility—it just crashes instantly whenever I try to open it. It’s kind of a weird situation because the utility needs to stay running in the background since it keeps auto-connecting me to a free public hotspot nearby, which isn't exactly what I want—I'd much rather just connect to my own home Wi-Fi. If anyone knows a fix, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks so much.

P.S. Just to clarify, we're talking about a Hackintosh here, not an actual Mac 😁

Maybe check out Amazon—they have a location in Seattle.

Well, I ended up picking this one since it seems like the best option I've found so far that actually works with my processor—I guess. Thanks, everyone!

Is this one any good too? http://bit.ly/1va6Qp9

I’d probably just go with this one because it's right there in the link—plus, I'm based near Niagara Falls, so it might be easier if something breaks—and honestly, those $67 aren't really a big deal to me, especially since I wouldn't have to swap out my motherboard for several years anyway.
New motherboard recommendations? in Desktops ·
I could use a little more help here! The motherboard I picked out is totally out of stock, and I can't find it anywhere else online. Does anyone know of another board with an LGA1155 socket that has a red and black theme? I'd be super grateful if someone could track one down—and if there really isn't anything in red and black, I guess just a plain black one would work too.
