nobody and nothing said:As Plato and Aristotle once noted, wonder is the beginning—the *arche*—of philosophy. And just as Fink explains extensively in Introduction, we’re talking about that sense of awe triggered by things we previously took for granted. It's when something we thought was totally unquestionable suddenly sparks a "why?" That kind of wonder is the true *arche* of philosophical thought.
So, what can trigger this? Even something as simple as grass, honestly. In those moments of forced introspection, certain "obvious" truths tend to crumble, dissolve, or just vanish entirely.
So yeah, looking at grass as a potential gateway to the "beginning of philosophy" is definitely one way to see it.
But here’s the real question—maybe even the crucial one: how do we interpret this *arche*? Because *arche* isn't just a starting point in terms of time; it's also the origin, the principle, the fundamental source.
Which leads us to this:
- Is wonder merely a starting point that we should eventually leave behind in favor of more secure, established knowledge (philosophy acting as the "supreme science")?
- Or is wonder the constant, living pulse of philosophy—the very source without which philosophy wouldn't even exist?
If we go with the first answer, then even if we accept grass as a "starting point," it has to be discarded once we find a newer, more solid foundation.
If we choose the second, then a new problem arises: does that "marijuana-induced" state of wonder still move us? Or has it just become another habit, a way to lull ourselves into a sleepy sort of familiarity?
Philosophy can only remain an *arche* as long as the wonder stays alive.
