That's actually an improvement over how it used to be.

If you're choosing between grading Chemistry in 7th/8th grade versus Computer Science in 5th/6th grade, and I were on the school board, I wouldn't hesitate for a second if I felt the criteria actually helped select students for a program specifically focused on tech.

Some books were just universally loved back then: Crime and Punishment. Even people who hated reading would pick that one up. Not to mention The Catcher in the Rye. It feels like filler to me now, I guess, but back then it was top-tier stuff.
