When is "being polite" just too much? in Psychology ·
Carl Rivera43 said:See, people who are just way too nice usually have this practiced smile down to a science. It’s almost like they’ve turned politeness into a corporate script, you know? Because of that, they really struggle when they run into someone who sees right through that polished routine and finds it totally grating.

Basically, these overly sweet types can't handle anything unexpected. They really don't mesh well with anyone who thinks outside their little box.

Yeah, true. It’s probably just a desperate need to control how everyone else thinks.
And then when things don't go according to script, or when people aren't falling all over them for being so "nice," they just lose it because their little manipulation tactic failed.

Yeah, I'm with you on that 👍. But how do you actually make sense of it? 🤷 Like, why does being overly polite make people so damn twitchy? 😁

You’re mixing up being argumentative with being reserved. Just because someone isn't a total suck-up and keeps things low-key doesn't mean they aren't peaceful or open to hearing out different perspectives and ideas.

But why just Americans? I mean, that whole label of being superficial applies to the entire West.
I don't really get it. How would some German be any more intense than an American? 🤷

Do you guys honestly think someone can actually get deep if they're constantly smirking while they talk? 🤷

You know the type—someone gets ticked off by some random stranger halfway across town, and then they turn around and dump all that negativity right on you. It’s just so incredibly distasteful. Wouldn't it be much better if they just channeled that energy into being kind or helpful instead? Honestly, people with that kind of temper would be much better off sticking to acting polite rather than constantly harassing everyone around them just to show off their "true colors."

I have such an affinity for kind-hearted people—those folks who actually go out of their way to say hello, strike up a conversation, or offer a helping hand. They have this way of making you feel relaxed and genuinely friendly, and I always find myself wanting to be around people like that.🙂

I agree. I'm not a fan of extremes, including people losing their cool like that.
But don't you think those overly polite types—the ones you don't actually know well—can be just as annoying with that constant, forced enthusiasm? 😁

goldenmaker21 said:Personally, I've always gravitated toward those people; most of them ended up becoming solid friends I can actually rely on. They seem like the most sincere ones because they aren't hiding anything.
People who are faking it or acting "fake" usually reveal themselves pretty quickly once you hang out a few times and the politeness wears off.
Cold, reserved people always turn me off, and I tend to avoid them. It's hard to build any kind of connection with someone who can't relax around me from the start; if we can't get past basic pleasantries, what's the point?

I don't get it. You're saying the ones putting on an act (I assume you mean the overly polite types) are fake, and you only become friends with the genuinely blunt ones.
But then you say you won't even give those cold people a chance. 🤔

Aren't those reserved people actually more honest? Like, maybe more honest than the polite ones. I mean, how can you really be polite to someone when you don't even know them? 🤷

I went to this training seminar last week with some foreigners, and honestly, most of them were just pathologically polite. By the end of the week, everyone was completely wiped out and basically bolted for the exit. We didn't really make any actual connections or anything. It makes me wonder what the point even was. I guess maybe it would’ve been better if they had all just shown up pissed off. Maybe then people would have actually been honest and we might have actually gotten to know each other. 🤷 🤷

There was this one girl there who just wouldn't stop smiling. Like, she had this ear-to-ear grin the entire time she was talking, without ever breaking character. She never once used a serious tone. I don't think I've ever seen anything like it in my life. 🤷
At first, I thought she was nice, but after a while, it just felt exhausting and totally fake.
Now I'm sitting here wondering if people like that actually have some kind of issue. Like a fear of showing real emotions or how others might react. 🤔

fadedrider17 said:Regarding the idea of pulling back from certain business dealings because of excessive politeness—I think I saw someone bring up waitressing or bartending as an example earlier. Let’s be clear: not every server is cut from the same cloth. You can tell immediately if someone is being genuinely kind or just putting on a fake, scripted performance. Some people actually care—they engage in real conversation or give you their honest opinion on what’s actually good on the menu and what’s a total waste of money. My buddy works at a high-end bistro in Chicago, and he has regulars who fly in from halfway across the country specifically because they demand that he be the one to serve them. They won't touch anyone else. It makes me wonder—what is it about his approach that draws them in like that?

redbear2 said:That’s basically the line between a decent server and a great one. Let's be real, most service industry folks don't actually care about your life, but a pro wants a happy customer. In a server-customer dynamic, being polite is just part of the job description. Your friend clearly knows how to read a room.

What’s "good" to one person might be annoying to someone else. 🤷
Like what mentalny said, some people really try to be sincere. I'd call that being moderately polite.
To me, that means not acting like you're best friends with someone you barely know.
So, those people who are way too nice? They're probably just being fake, because I guess you can't really be that friendly to a total stranger.
Maybe that's why it bugs some people—that forced friendliness and closeness that feels a bit premature. 🤷

Sean Cruz said:We’re talking about excessive politeness here, not basic manners. And honestly, those people who are constantly over-the-top friendly? They’re usually hypocrites through and through, and they can be incredibly grating. That doesn't mean anyone who finds overly intense people annoying has "problems."

Yeah, I agree, especially regarding the "over-the-top" part.
Some people here are mixing up excessive politeness with just being decent. I have nothing against being polite.
Nobody is saying waiters or people in general need to be assholes. It’s just when they’re way too bubbly right off the bat.
Those people who want to please you so much it actually starts to get annoying. They won't leave you alone.
Like service where you walk into a restaurant and they're hovering over you, trying to cater to you more than you ever asked for or even needed.
Doesn't that feel a little fake to you? 🤷

People you’ve literally just met acting with this forced intimacy that makes you feel kind of weirded out. But again, you can't exactly say they aren't being "nice." (For example, someone might just view both groups as sleazy 😠 )

So if you think about it... how can these overly polite people be so sweet to someone they don't even know?
I guess my conclusion is that it doesn't really matter to them. These overly polite types probably just care about themselves and making a good impression. All that kindness is basically just masked indifference and superficiality. 🤔

redbear2 said:I’ve always had a soft spot for servers who are actually friendly and smiling. It’s pretty much in the job description, right? It just makes grabbing a coffee at a local Starbucks so much more pleasant when the person behind the counter isn't acting like they're doing you a massive favor.

I can't stand people who put on this fake, polished persona the moment we meet, just because they're desperate to win me over.

My favorite kind of person is someone "normal"—someone who just acts like they couldn't care less about performing or trying to impress me. They aren't out here hunting for approval; they just exist as they are. Take them or leave them. That's it.

Well put. 👍
It's the same thing for the person who finds all those overly nice, polite people totally grating. 🙂
(While they'll often be impressed by reserved people who don't try too hard)

Obviously, not everyone sees it that way, and not everyone interprets excessive politeness as hypocrisy. Some think the people who are bothered by it are just confusing hypocrisy with politeness, which would be a result of some personal complexes. I personally think that person reads people pretty well, and there's something to it. Like, their aversion to those types of people is probably more of a good intuition than some deep-seated complex.
But maybe I'm wrong. 🤷

Sean Cruz said:How can you not figure it out if the person is actually good at judging character?

I’ve never had much patience for people who are overly polite. It isn't some "specific aversion"—it's just a natural reaction to people who are clearly putting on an act.

Being fake-nice right off the bat = acting
yeah, probably. I guess that's why she finds super polite people annoying from the jump. because they're just performing.

I know someone who absolutely can't stand people who are overly polite. It’s especially bad when they just met them or are just having a brief interaction. Whenever someone is being way too nice or performatively courteous—like a server at a local diner, for example—it totally gets under her skin. That excessive warmth, being super approachable, or just trying too hard to please everyone. People who are just wide open and overly friendly... man. She stays far away from that. 😠
Personally, I'm the opposite. I always fall for those types of people who are immediately open and easy to talk to.
I honestly can't wrap my head around why she has this specific repulsion toward them, though it's pretty interesting since she's actually really good at reading people. (Whereas I'm terrible at it.)
What do you guys think is actually going on behind all that forced politeness? What are their motives? 🤔 What kind of negative associations might someone like her have with that kind of personality? 🤷 And does it irritate you when people are super friendly right off the bat? Or do you find it attractive?

Casey White13 said:Why did Hershey's totally wreck Kolumbo—seriously, the best chocolate bar ever made, hands down, with the most iconic wrapper?

Yeah, I'm talking about the Dorina Kolumbo 🙏 🙏

It was good.
I don't know, maybe it was just a cheap version of a Swiss bar, like a Toblerone knockoff. Maybe that's why they failed.
Probably too much competition or something, so it wasn't worth it. 🤷

I started watching, but I didn't make it to the end... honestly, that wailing was getting on my nerves right from the jump.
The movie feels like a total rip-off of Searching for Sugarman. Except, maybe, Sugarman actually knew how to sing. ☕

So you think you're some kind of psychic now, Milan? You think you already know exactly where this whole thread is headed? 🤷

Look, I really don't need you dumping more of that mindless nonsense from the British tabloids on us. Maybe that stuff matters to some small-minded folks over in London, but it just isn't relevant to us here in the States.

No way in hell. 🙄 And what about the Greeks? Aren't they lagging behind too? I mean, is there even a reason to make a whole separate thing out of them? 🤷 Since when did this forum become your personal diary where you get to dictate what people cover and which sources they use? I guess you think you own the place now.

Your arguments don't even make sense. Sorry, but they really don't.

So, what now? Is this thread actually going to reopen?
After watching that game last night, there’s definitely a ton to say about Brazil.
Come on, just give the thread another shot, please. 🙂

Alex Cook said:This whole thread is basically begging to turn into a mindless list of facts. If you missed it, that kind of thing hasn't really been happening since the group stage ended—which was always the favorite pastime for those non-resident "tourists" on this subforum.

So the news is covering this? Great. Just another excuse to breathe life back into that one highly visited thread about the same old issues. 👍

If people want more commentary on the SP, I guess they can just go read the endless PDFs from before, during, and after the matches.

Look, maybe waking up at 5:45 AM didn't agree with me and I'm being too blunt. If that's the case, maybe someone else can unlock this thread if they actually see some potential here. Personally, kill me now, but I still don't see it.

The thread isn't even a chat, it's actually the opposite. It's mostly just personal takes, if you actually bothered to read what people were posting.
I mean, did you even read Skylark's observations?

Most of the posts actually made me laugh. Based on how funny people are being, I think there's potential here.🤷

My thread about what we actually learned from this World Cup got locked because apparently it was "stupid."
I don't get what's so dumb about discussing this—especially when the news outlets are all over it—while some other thread about Greek soccer gets a pass? 😕

The topic is actually pretty serious and reflective, plus it had some funny side comments from people here, which was kind of the point. I’m asking the mods to please unlock it, because I actually want to see what else everyone thinks about this tournament. 🙂

Do you actually feel a sense of rage or anger when you want to lash out at someone because of their typical behavior or some dumb thing they said?

I mean, I guess those situations are always the same ones that trigger anxiety and make you feel like you need to get defensive.

Can you pinpoint a specific moment like that and figure out what exactly triggered your values? 🤷
Too much arrogance in Psychology & Therapy ·
I guess the issue is your circle of friends. It’s hard to learn how to actually respect people when you guys are constantly just trying to outdo one another.
Maybe you need someone empathetic in your life—someone who can show you a different perspective while also giving you a bit of a reality check on your conscience.

Did you build up these walls because people burned you in the past?
Or maybe there's something your friends have that you're secretly jealous of, or some area where you just haven't hit your stride yet?
Taken 2 (2012) in Movies ·
I still can't wrap my head around why this movie got a sequel. The plot is just painfully cliché.
It’s some teenager getting kidnapped during a summer trip to Washington, D.C., because her dad is an American spy or whatever—honestly, I wasn't even paying attention.
To me, this whole thing is just pure junk food cinema. 🤷
