My new laptop just arrived with Windows Vista pre-installed. Up until now, I've done everything on Windows XP and been perfectly happy with it—stability, workflow, virtual drives... you name it.
This Vista thing just doesn't sit right with me, and now Windows 7 is hitting the scene.
What are the actual advantages of Windows 7 over XP? To be blunt (I'm not an idiot), it took me 15 minutes just to dig out File Explorer in Vista.
Regarding benefits, I know Windows 7 on x64 is faster, but driver issues are a headache (like for printers, etc.), and things won't be truly seamless for a while.
The setup I'm most tempted by is installing a custom Windows XP Black Edition on this new laptop, but I'm asking again: what is the real advantage of Windows 7 Ultimate (x86)? Is it just speed???
Can I install the new OS while keeping my old files intact, meaning I keep this Vista since I currently hold the license for it?
Is it mandatory to wipe the drive—format everything before installing?
You guys might have already covered all this in the last 54 pages of posts, but honestly, it's all a mess. If someone could provide one serious answer for me and anyone else facing similar dilemmas, since Windows 7 has only recently started appearing on torrent sites.

In short:
-Comparison of previous Windows versions with the new release (link)
-If there isn't a Windows 7 driver for your printer, it doesn't mean you should wait for the new release (link)
-Advantages of Windows 7 Ultimate (link)
-You can run both Vista and the new release; it's called multiboot or dual boot (link)
-It’s not required, but highly recommended to back up your precious data first (e.g., My Documents)
-Recently? 😕 hm, not really. 🙄
