Mouse buying advice needed in Computer Peripherals ·
I'm currently stuck using an Apple Mighty Mouse (wired, USB). It’s got four buttons and a tiny trackball, but the cable is fraying and the trackball is basically dead—scrolling has become a total mission impossible. I'm not looking to drop a fortune on some high-end mouse, but I spotted an Apple Bluetooth model at a great price, so that's what I'll be picking up. My Apple iMac already has Bluetooth built-in anyway. Thanks for clearing that up. 🙂

Since I don't want to clutter things up with a new thread, here is my "holy trinity":

http://www.geniusnet.com/wSite/ct?xI...tNode=105&mp=1 (Best Buy, $39)

http://www.gigabyte.us/products/prod....aspx?pid=3679 (Walmart, $44)

http://www.gigabyte.us/products/prod....aspx?pid=3821 (Walmart, $64)

Are laser mice actually better than optical ones? What’s the real difference?

Benjamin King2 said:For the last couple of years, I've been dealing nothing but trouble with Western Digital drives. If you're just using it for backups or occasional storage, fine—no big deal. But if you plan on running that drive non-stop, say for streaming movies or something where it's spinning for hours on end, I wouldn't touch Western Digital with a ten-foot pole.

Given that point, Centro.hr currently has two different 1TB external drives available:

Adata (36-month warranty)

Hitachi (24-month warranty)

The price difference is about $6.75

Since Western Digital recently acquired Hitachi, does that change anything? Just because a company gets bought out doesn't mean the product quality has to tank, right?

I finally pulled the trigger on this single stick.
My office keeps a massive, long-term document archive, and a few days ago my PC just froze up on me. I got hit with some kind of blue screen—not quite a Blue Screen of Death, but weird enough that it kicked me right out of the GUI and into DOS mode. After the reboot, I had to sit through chkdsk for a while.
Everything survived, luckily. Since I didn't have any backup gear on hand—no USB drives, CDs, or DVDs—I temporarily dumped this year's files onto a network drive.
Tomorrow, I’m moving my entire My Documents folder over to a flash drive so I don't end up 🙂 🧐

Verbatim USB drive from 7-Eleven; anyone actually using one of these? Is it a solid choice?

Unfortunately, the motherboard doesn't support USB 3.0

I need it for backing up data at work.

I found it, but only the 8GB version

I'm looking to pick up a new USB drive, so I've been crunching the numbers on specs versus price. I spotted this (on the manufacturer's website) as being the cheapest option. I'm wondering if this is actually a solid move—do you guys find their stuff to be reliable, or should I look elsewhere?

You can pick one up at Best Buy. Media Matters New York City

Is any web shop actually reliable just because they bother to post their terms of service, shipping policies, and user agreements on their site? Not necessarily. 😉

On my 2007 iMac, iStat Pro Dashboard shows the ambient temp at 82°F, the hard drive at 100°F, and the CPU at 106°F. If I had central AC running, things might actually feel a bit fresher. 😁

If you order through the Apple Store (USA), the Magic Mouse and Apple keyboard are bundled right into the price.
Alternatively, you could try your luck at a local retailer, maybe even haggle for an iMac without any peripherals, though I wouldn't hold my breath.

As for the keyboard, honestly, as long as it’s USB or Bluetooth, you shouldn't have any issues. Usually, you can just check the manufacturer's site (like Logitech) to see if the keyboard is labeled Mac-friendly or if there's a specific driver available. That said, just because there isn't a dedicated driver doesn't mean it won't work perfectly fine with a Mac.

I’m really struggling here. I just can't seem to get a grip on these workflow changes. I keep falling back on these stupid little habits I picked up back when I was using Windows, and I can't shake them. Honestly, I don't have the luxury of time to relearn everything; once I sit down, I just need to power through my tasks as fast as possible and get out of there. 🙂
It’s great and all, sure. But honestly? It just makes me get through my workload a hell of a lot faster.

Does anyone actually know how much radiation this thing puts out? It’s sitting right by my head while I sleep... I keep turning it off, but then I just end up turning it back on again.
🙂

Hopefully, the following will be of some use to you: Switch 101: Back when I was stuck on Windows, I used to... 🙂

If you want the lowdown on radiation levels for your specific iMac model, you can find all the details here: Apple - iMac - Compare the 21.5- and 27-inch iMac. Check out the "Environmental status report" and "Apple and The Global Environment."

I've got this older iMac from 2007 that I just leave running constantly. The only time it actually restarts is when there’s a system update, though I make sure to shut it down if a bad storm rolls through.
My sleep hasn't gotten any worse just because my bed and my desk with my iMac are practically on top of each other.

I managed to stack a 7% discount with a 5% cash rebate on my Chase card... It’s decent, I guess... 🙂

Heading out Monday to grab it!
Finally!

Did you actually get it? It's already Wednesday. 😉

That's right. You can't upgrade from Windows Vista Business to Windows 7 Home Premium anymore; you're stuck upgrading to either Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate (link). If you go the custom installation route, you'll wipe everything on the drive—have you actually backed up your data yet?

You're also going to need a different product key to activate Windows 7. As for the laptop, the RAM meets the bare minimum requirements for a 32-bit OS (link).

Talking about throwing love away? That’s a choice you make before anything else. "De gustibus non est disputandum"

There is really only one Mac OS X, unlike the various versions of Windows OS that people are still dragging around today (XP, Vista, 7).

What "little programs" are we even talking about? Are they actually essential, or can you just scrap them to free up some hard drive space?

It's just a small drive (under 50 GB); honestly, it might be time to swap it out for a new one that's actually a decent size.
