I was thinking about roster building the other day, and it feels like the era of the hyper-specialized athlete is actually kind of making things more fragile. Don't get me wrong, having a guy who can play one position perfectly is great, but there's something to be said for the "Swiss Army Knife" types.
I remember watching a team a few years back that had a guy who could slot into three different roles depending on who was injured or out of form. He wasn't necessarily the superstar, but he was the glue that kept the whole system from collapsing when things got messy. It’s such a relief for a manager when you have someone who doesn't need a month of training to adapt to a new spot on the field.
Nowadays, it feels like everyone wants to be the specialist, the headline-grabber, or the big-money signing. But in the grind of a long season, isn't that versatility actually more valuable than raw talent?
Do you guys prefer a squad full of specialists, or would you rather have a few reliable "do-it-all" players to cover the gaps?
Please don't let the moms on here crucify me, I just wanted to weigh in since I'm just the auntie in this situation... 😁 I honestly can't wrap my head around this new generation. I don't know if it’s how they're being raised, just the era we live in, or if she’s just hitting that weird middle school phase... My sister's kid, she's in 7th grade. She used to be such a sweet, talkative little thing, really bright and social for her age. Now ☕heaven forbid, she's a different person. She won't hang out with anyone—or rather, she claims nobody wants to be her friend. Apparently, the only people worth knowing are those obnoxious influencers, and every other word out of her mouth sounds like she’s declaring war on society 🥱 She’s on her cell phone for 18 hours a day, and her diet is basically nothing but fast food, meat, or sugar. Zero vegetables. Her absolute favorite thing in the world is grabbing a sandwich. There's no physical activity at all; even walking a single mile feels like a marathon to her. And yeah, the weight is definitely creeping up.
Everything at school is "boring" to her. She went to a local youth club meeting, something meant for socializing, and even though the girl there introduced herself three times, she couldn't even bother to remember her name. She was just like, "I mean, I've only seen her three times in my life." The only things that actually matter to her are her cell phone and her headphones. Her pace of everything—walking, getting dressed, changing clothes—is about the speed of a snail... Hygiene is non-existent. You practically have to drag her into the shower, and brushing her teeth isn't even a habit. I actually caught her just putting toothpaste in her mouth and spitting it out just so she'd smell minty... Kids in her class keep asking why she changed her hair, saying she looked better before, and she takes that as a total insult to her soul. If her mom says something, or if I ask her a question, she acts like we're personally attacking her?! 🤔 I'm honestly lost on how to deal with a kid like this, and it’s pretty jarring seeing how much she's flipped from just a few years ago... But what really keeps me up at night is the eating habits and the weight, because she's already starting to run into actual health issues.
Maybe 15 or 18 years ago, my mom and I went in for some kind of checkup at a clinic somewhere near Preradovic in New York City. I can't recall the exact address... The whole thing involved standing there naked on this device while they attached a few little sensors to you, like on your fingers and a couple of other spots. Then the machine just scans you and tells you exactly where everything is going wrong. Thinking back on it now, it sounds like some total pseudoscience nonsense. But honestly, that guy—or doctor, whatever he was—hit the nail right on the head regarding my issues. I was just starting to deal with some ovarian inflammation, and he told me my heart was weak, which is actually something we have in our family genetics...
I'm curious if anyone knows what kind of clinic that actually was?
Ran CCleaner and Malwarebytes twice... came up totally empty handed. I was actually trying to get AVG set up, but... I couldn't even get halfway through because my internet crawled to such a pathetic snail's pace that everything just froze right in the middle of the download/install process.
Help me out here, please. A coworker of mine is using some kind of HP machine at work—it looks pretty new, maybe only a year old, but honestly, it’s acting like a total piece of junk. Out of nowhere, her internet speeds have just tanked over the last week. She hasn't been downloading anything sketchy either (just the usual stuff, checking emails, maybe grabbing an image or two),
and lately, she can barely even load a single webpage, or if she does, it takes like five minutes...
It doesn't matter which browser she tries to use, too.
On top of that, I'm seeing this message about an HP recovery disk being full, even though she hasn't actually triggered a system restore or anything once. So, there isn't a single system restore point available.
😵
There's almost nothing on her C or D drives, maybe like 2% usage, and I've already uninstalled basically every useless program I could find... just left the bare essentials.
What do you think is going on, and is there anything specific in the hardware specs I should be looking at?
I'm looking to pick up a few original compilations... you know, various artists, either imports or domestic stuff, just something good to blast while I'm driving through the city.
Price is definitely a factor, so keep it around $6.75, and I'm mainly hunting for that pop/rock/dance vibe...
@Angela Smith2: As far as per-person portions go, you can honestly totally wing it because nobody actually knows what your guests are going to do, and honestly, maybe even you don't know either...
Look, just using my own experience as an example, for a round table of about... well, mostly ten people, we’d usually just grab one big box of pastries,
something like this, I have no clue exactly how many treats are tucked inside, but we used that as our standard measure. It wasn't like we were overcrowding the tables, we just wanted enough variety so everything looked pretty and well-presented. When we did those gift boxes of sweets for the family, they were the exact same size, except those were packed absolutely to the brim.
My wedding was in August and since it was so sweltering out, nobody even touched the sweets, maybe like... 20% got eaten at most. Everyone kept telling me afterward that they just didn't have any appetite for dessert, and the few people who did grab a couple pieces only went for the ones that were genuinely amazing. I ended up with a massive amount of leftovers, so I just handed them out at the end to anyone who wasn't immediate family so they could take some home...
So, we were watching some... I don't know, maybe an iskon program (or was it TV cinema?) that’s been playing on a loop lately, but... honestly, there wasn't anything smarter to watch, so... we just zoned out, obviously!
3/10 I guess, considering this isn't even my usual thing—I'm really not into those biographical flicks—but this one was... poorly made, at least if you ask my amateur opinion.
The whole premise was basically trying to paint him as this... crazy genius, totally eccentric, someone who lived and breathed his work...
The way they handled the time jumps was just messy, like they couldn't actually manage to weave everything into one coherent story, plus I feel like a ton of stuff regarding Jobs-related history was left out, at least from what I've gathered from articles and YouTube videos. And I honestly thought it would wrap up closer to when he passed away, rather than... you know, ending back in '98?
A lot of things just weren't explained at all, like his private life, or maybe I just completely missed the point of what happened with his wife toward the end—you know, the one they hyped up so much? Was that the same woman from the beginning who shows up later with a teenage daughter or was it someone else entirely??? 😵 None of his friends were portrayed very well either, there was hardly any depth to his personal life, and the business stuff felt super rushed and superficial.
As far as the looks go, Ashton Kutcher and several others were a great physical match, but the acting was just bad. Same goes for his friend, Steve. And that actor who played Bill... I haven't liked him since New Cura.🙄 Generally speaking, Ashton Kutcher just can't pull off those serious roles for me; he has this look... like he's constantly mocking something, this smug little smirk always hovering at the corner of his mouth. That unbelievable, pathetic attempt at portraying Bill Gates really proved it for me. 🤔 All in all, it didn't really do it for me.
Hey everyone, My mom just got the annual statement for my sister’s loan (since Mom is acting as the co-signer). Given that this debt has been dragging on for about 14 years now, I’m starting to get a little nervous about my own neck... My mom is getting older, and if she passes away in a few years, I've been googling and seeing that heirs might end up inheriting all those debts too, but I'm wondering if that’s an absolute rule or if there's some wiggle room?
Is there any way to actually prevent that from happening?
So, here’s the situation: we have a house and yard that's currently going through the whole legalizing process. Mom owns half, and I own the other half. On the property records, it's basically just listed as the land the house sits on for now, since we're waiting on the inspectors to clear everything for the final legalization...
Mom is the co-signer for both of my sister's loans; my sister handles the big one at Bank of America, while Mom covers the smaller one at Bank of America...
Does anyone have any advice? Could Mom maybe draw up a gift deed or something similar so I don't technically become the heir to the debt, or perhaps transfer it to someone outside the family? Or should we just look into selling the house entirely? 🤔
We actually grabbed the cake from a little bakery owned by Martin over on Scitarjev Street, and let me tell you, it is incredible... I tried some samples myself—the lemon and chocolate parfait flavors were just out of this world!
$3.25 dreaming...
But now I’m dealing with a whole different headache. Basically, I want to pack up some leftovers—either cake slices or just random sweets—to give to a specific group of people, like our immediate family when they head home... but how do I even pull that off? Since the wedding is at a banquet hall, should I just stash some containers in the fridge and tell the servers that if anyone comes looking for them, I was the one who sent them?
What happens if someone spots them and then starts complaining later, like, "Hey, they got treats and we didn't!" Oh my god !! I usually swear by the rule of "everyone gets some or nobody gets anything"... but... but...
lonepuma18 said:We ended up getting our wedding cake from Sweet Den in the suburbs. Even though our menu at Pyrus (everything by Kašnar) already included a cake, once we tried theirs at Seka’s wedding, it was THE one. I don't think I've ever had anything so light and airy, almost like ice cream. Most wedding cakes are just bland because they use too much margarine or that heavy fondant... but this was seriously incredible. You should really go there and try their treats, or just the flavors. Seka had three options (dark truffle, a fruit mix, and some lighter chocolate), but since everything tasted so amazing, we had to pick four—so we went with the vanilla cheesecake too. 😍 We couldn't really afford a fifth flavor, though. They even included gluten-free treats for my maid of honor in the price. For 150 people— $650... that's $4.25/each. Please, just go and try them... 😁
Man, they're moving too, so who cares about that...🤷 though apparently they still do pastries.... I have no clue, so I just shot them an email to see what the deal is...
Oh my god, you guys... I just got the news that King Bakery in Zelina is doing a total overhaul for the entire month of August. Which basically means my favorite little sweet spot is totally out of commission!
Seriously, someone help me out here... they had the best prices around, like, $10 $4.00 a pop. Does anyone know a place that won't absolutely rob me blind, but actually makes cakes that taste like actual food instead of cardboard? 🙂
Hit up the State Fair again today, decided to sample some M&M and Vincek... The lady over at the M&M booth was actually pretty sweet, and that fruit parfait was easily the highlight—tried one orange and one strawberry... though honestly, the Chocolatey one was kind of a letdown, left this weird margarine aftertaste because they definitely went way too heavy on the cream.
As for Vincek, those raspberry desserts in the little cups were top-tier... The nougat cake was just way too sugary for my taste, and the cheesecake had this bizarre crust that felt totally soggy... We didn't grab any this time, but last year we noticed Vincek uses a biscuit base for their iced wind treats instead of actual meringue!
We were thinking about checking out Sugarland, but man, those prices alone were enough to make us walk right past... Plus, the selection was pretty mid, seeing as there were only three types of cake left and the staff seemed to have zero clue how to actually sell anything or even get people interested... so yeah, pass.
Heading over to a spot in a nearby suburb now, King Bakery. I’ve got a feeling they’ll end up being our final pick, especially if they live up to what we saw and tasted back at the Wedding Expo...
I feel like someone already brought this up, but just so I don't look like an idiot, let me double-check: do we actually need a food safety certificate for the community center too... or whatever the official term for those cookie inspections is...
Mark Cox16 said:I am signing my name to this sentiment entirely! In fact, I just walked in here specifically to ask if anyone else has had their pastries served at a wedding? The girls representing the bakery at the expo were phenomenal! They even gave me a whole box of sweets to take home so we could try them. And those pastries... 😍 Usually, when someone on an online forum claims something "melts in your mouth," I tend to think 🙄 but honestly, these truly do melt in your mouth. 😍 The items I got in my box were the ones sitting on the round stand to the left, and that photo is actually from the wedding expo itself.. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?f...type=3&theater
Bottom line: their desserts are phenomenal. My only hesitation is the price point of $30/lb. I’m thinking I might grab some treats from Lidl for the house instead (they have some varieties I find delicious that only cost $13/lb), but for the actual event venue, I'll go with these unless I can find something of equal quality that doesn't break the bank.
Yeah, the pastries are definitely on the pricier side, though they swear they use actual butter instead of that cheap margarine stuff, so maybe that's why they're charging a premium... I was mostly looking at cakes, though, because we're actually making our own sweets—my aunt is doing them and she usually does catering for weddings—so we're specifically eyeing their cakes, like that ice wind one and the Ferrero... Here’s the breakdown from their Facebook page: It's $10-$4.00 per slice. $3.25 fruit or parfait, and $4.00 Ferrero. The slices are roughly 2 x 3 x 2.5 inches.
So I hit up this wedding expo and decided to play taste tester for two different vendors... basically a classic case of David vs. Goliath 😂 It was a massive catering corporation versus a smaller local operation, basically Lido against King Bakery from a small town outside the city, and honestly, you can probably guess who took the win here... 😍
There were plenty of other wedding caterers there, but my bestie and I had already reached our limit with all the... well, the endless flyers being shoved in our faces and people aggressively pitching us services we didn't even want, so after about an hour we just bailed. We didn't even get through all the dessert stands. Looks like we'll have to do some more scouting around the metro area later.
Lido didn't really wow me with anything except how pretty the cakes and mousses looked visually. They’re definitely decorated nicely, and the one I managed to snag—which wasn't easy since the lady at the booth wasn't exactly welcoming or friendly, you practically had to beg her just to give you a sample—was actually decent, some kind of coconut thing. Their cake prices are $5.00/piece without cream, or 12 with whipped cream.
King Bakery (they've got a page on Facebook) absolutely crushed it with their presentation, their kindness, and they weren't pushy at all, plus the flavor and variety were spot on. Their Ice Wind is easily the best (and they make it with meringue crusts, obviously)! And if you're a chocolate lover, their Ferrero cake isn't bad either. I think the price is around $4.00/piece.
It always kills me during those first two days, and back when I could actually find Baralgin M, that stuff was a lifesaver if I caught it early enough... but once I miss that window, nothing works, not even the Neofen I’ve been using lately... basically, by the time the pain hits a fever pitch, you can toss whatever pills you want at it and they won't do squat. I don't know if it's some psychological thing or just... I have no clue. 🤷 Does anyone else deal with this kind of thing?
I'm going to pick up some raspberry leaf tea today, fingers crossed it actually helps, especially on day one 😢
If anyone’s come across some similar cake toppers or knows a baker who actually makes the weird stuff, let me know... they’ve gotta be hilarious, because honestly, if they aren't funny, I'm not even bothering putting them on the cake 😛
So, my boyfriend is the best man at his nephew's baptism. Yeah, obviously I nearly passed out when they actually had the nerve to ask him to chip in, though part of me gets why they’d go to him since who else are you going to ask to cough up the cash $1000 for some ridiculous ritual... besides family, right?
I didn't mean to be disrespectful calling it "ridiculous," but the whole thing really did turn into a circus because it's being treated like a backyard wedding, and these kids are expecting the world. I can't even blame the parents... it's pretty rare to find kids raised with any sense of modesty where you could actually expect them to be okay with anything less than a massive gift pile.
Anyway, the little guy started off by asking for a MacBook. Then he and his older brother got into some kind of spat, and the older one ended up banning the laptop idea... which just made my boyfriend lose it and say he's giving him the money anyway, and he couldn't care less what the other kid thinks about it.
Honestly, these kinds of situations just make me feel sick, and I was thinking about skipping it entirely... but it turns out I have an excuse since I've got a huge exam that day!
