Of course they can—it’s practically impossible not to—because they’re going to be scanning your ovaries and uterus regardless... the uterus is tiny, roughly the size of a walnut (though it fluctuates slightly), so even the most microscopic changes are glaringly obvious on an ultrasound 👍, and you'd also see the corpus luteum on the ovary 🙂

The first visit is definitely going to include a manual palpation—which is normally done vaginally, but since you're a virgin, they'll perform it rectally—followed by a Pap smear and an ultrasound. Given the absolute chaos of your menstrual cycle, there's a very real chance they'll send you off for hormone blood work and vaginal swabs too.
Honestly, it would be a smart move to find a provider covered by your insurance/socialized care, because otherwise, you're stuck paying out of pocket for every single prescription they give you (since your general practitioner isn't allowed to write gyno-related scripts or referrals anymore)😢)
Based on what you described, it could be cysts on your ovaries, but you won't know for sure until they actually run the tests during the exam.
As for the costs—well, it varies depending on where you go—but just to give you a ballpark figure, an ultrasound might run $67, a Pap smear is around $150-$67, and the exam itself is likely $150-$200.... so you're probably looking at a total bill somewhere around $600, though that can fluctuate quite a bit these days.

I have no idea how things work when you’re switching gynecologists—I’m talking about a completely different field, obviously—but I’ve had to swap out dentists before, and the logic seems to be identical. Essentially, I just had to swing by the new dentist's office, ask if they were taking new patients, and then hand over my information from the previous one—simple as that. And honestly? Since that day, I’ve been officially under their care; I didn't have to lug around any paperwork from Blue Cross or anything like that, nor did I need to carry my physical medical file with me... so maybe that offers some clarity. Either way, it looks like I’ll be switching my primary OB-GYN soon too, quite clearly.😠

Look, your "friend" is lying through her teeth👎. Dr. Marton has been my gynecologist for over two years now, and I have never paid more than $200 for a visit; in fact, my last checkup was exactly that amount, and it covered the ultrasound, the Pap, the physical exam, and all the swabs😍. And I should mention—she’s actually gentle and takes the time to explain things, unlike those doctors who act like they’re counting the seconds until you finally get out of their office
. Personally, I couldn't stand Dr. Tadic over on Mass Ave—absolutely loathed her because she kept hammering it into my head that I couldn't have kids due to PCOS. It was exhausting😲, not to mention she shoved all these different hormone pills down my throat claiming they would "just magically" fix my ovaries, so I eventually just stopped taking them. Dr. Tadic is fine enough right up until you actually get sick—then she treats you like a complete idiot and tries to charge you double for everything
