Alex Rogers91 said:Top replies:

A coworker was telling me about her dad back in the seventies when he was living in Chicago. He runs into some shady character who just starts hurling insults at him out of nowhere. My old man, being himself, tells the guy he isn't interested, but this jerk keeps pushing, asking if she wasn't pretty enough or if there was something wrong with her. My dad just shut him down like he was nothing...

1. What the hell are you talking about!?
2. ...take it up with your wife when you get home.
3. Don't make me come over there...
4. "What's up?" (just repeat exactly what they just said).

5 (bonus): say nothing at all, just walk right over the guy who spoke to you.

Alex Rogers91 said:We never had those intense fan riots like the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry back in Boston. Around here, the Peter fans and the Carpenter fans always got along just fine. It was all just jokes, messing around, and constant banter—very much in the spirit of a surrealist...

Alex Rogers91, he told you exactly what you needed to hear... if all you can see in the whole history of these groups is the glorification of riots and fights, then, buddy, you're missing the point. The core of that text is that these groups were massive crowds of people who had a blast, drank, ate good food, and cheered for their team... period. Just because two guys in a Boston alleyway got into a scuffle doesn't make them savages... mentioning it isn't about celebrating violence, it's just how fan culture works—especially in places like Boston, where the fanatics burn scarves and tear things up, but then go grab a drink together after the game... back to the groups, Dado was completely right (see the part at the bottom of the text) to call out how he could have easily destroyed the very city he lived in. But he didn't. And you can bet he’d sit down with him today over the same steak and beer and just ask "why," without letting his ego get in the way (which is what he should do). That’s the point of this story, even if it feels too niche. These groups are legends; being a fan group doesn't make them villains. In fact, they own who they are, which makes them far more honest than those closeted nationalists Alex Rogers91 was talking about.

Alex Rogers91 said:That’s Sean Connery for you.

Look, people use "Sean Connery" as a sort of code or a vague catchphrase for shady business that needs to stay under the radar, or just to talk about things the rest of the group isn't supposed to grasp. For instance, back in the summer of 2001, when we were working at the Rhode Island School of Design, saying "hey, Sean Connery, it's time" meant it was nearly noon and Enis and I were heading out for a smoke break in the courtyard behind the campus. It functions exactly like the way Alex Rogers91 used it in his example...

😁

Well, damn... even if I try to use some slang from back home in the States:

- mahalski - someone who is way too nosy, constantly sticking their nose in everyone else's business, a total gossip...

- hahar - unattractive, unpleasant, repulsive, low-class, crude...

I can't even begin to explain what a "mahalski hahar" is... and contrary to what you'd think from those individual definitions, the person is actually a great guy, a legend, a real boss, someone truly worthy of respect...

Insults are just part of the deal here. Regardless of how offensive the words seem individually, putting them together creates a positive vibe. For example, when Alex Rogers91 calls Elwuss a "total jerk," he's actually doing it out of affection and respect...

The local dialect has become full of these beautiful, made-up terms again... most of which mean nothing, but they're as useful for daily banter as a street dealer is for finding weed... meaning, they're very useful.

Not sure what I was actually getting at...

There I also failed miserably at trying to explain things for my college papers...

Alex Rogers91 said:A legendary group... especially that Brooklyn crowd from back before the war with HC 🙏 .

Respect to the Joint Union Thrash Crew!

I tried looking for that iconic JU HC banner from the 90s on the Maniac website, but their gallery is a complete mess... those Joint guys were an incredible crew, just like the Red Firm boys who were deep into hardcore too... basically a bunch of fanatics...

I run into a guy quite often who used to lead the Joints; he ran a video rental shop near us back in the day, now he’s got a bar in that new building by the Greyhound station, so everyone gathers at Ganja's to catch the games... video store, bar, stadium... it’s pure neighborhood chaos.

Finding good food there is a struggle, especially when you've gotten used to living with a beer belly... A buddy of mine met his wife on a forum for the maniacs (basically die-hard Yankees fans), and she’s all about country music while he’s old-school hardcore. When country is big in town, they listen to country. When it's hip-hop, they go for hip-hop. When the Yankees play, they follow the Yankees. They aren't missing out on anything.

I’ll weigh in on this once I actually get my hands on Windows. Right now, macOS is just totally wrecking the quotes, which makes whatever I have to say—as someone almost finished with a degree in Comparative Literature (hey dzdzile, give my best to your mom)—completely meaningless. 🙂

If you want a book recommendation, assuming you can find it, check out NARCISS OF THE CITY: A DICTIONARY OF URBAN SLANG. It's an absolute masterpiece.

I think there are still some left. It probably won't sell out since Irena moved the show to a larger venue, bigger than the old local gallery space.
