Thanks for the heads-up. I’ll definitely swing by Monica’s to sample those pastries. And thanks for the tip on the cookies, though I've already made up my mind—I'm capping it at about a pound per person. How did your guests react to the cakes? Did they actually enjoy them, or did you end up with a mountain of leftovers?
urbanbison70 said:Seriously, what's the damage for a wedding cake? My venue is quoting me roughly $267 for a setup meant for about 20 guests. Is that overkill? 🤷
That’s $13 per person. Usually, you're looking at $10-$5.00 a slice... I suppose the unit price drops when you scale up, but honestly? Seems overpriced.
boldbison32 said:Look, you shared your recommendation, and that's all you can do. People will either take your advice or ignore it, so there's really no point in stressing over it.🙂 Personally, I haven't had a chance to try anything from Mus, but I did try Absum before my own wedding, and to be honest, I wasn't a huge fan... but hey, everyone has different tastes, right?😉
I don't lose sleep over it. Not one bit. 😉 Just a quick heads-up to the ladies: there are plenty of cheaper pastries out there, though you usually have to head out of Chicago to find them. That bit you wrote about Absum was spot on. I'm definitely using those cookies at the local fair as an excuse to head out there again. A perfect cover. 😬Just to be sure I’ve got this right. For me, they were perfectly fine—nothing out of the ordinary compared to places like Emma’s or those other high-end bakeries, just significantly easier on the wallet.
Look, I’d bother if it meant saving a few hundred bucks, but I was lucky enough to sample them at the fair, so I’m all set. Basically, if you have the time and haven't picked out your desserts yet—and don't mind waiting until the fair—hit up the music and Absolut stands. You might find something you love there for a much better price.
Donna Chase12, I know you won't make it since the wedding is right around the corner, plus I'm sure you've got your hands full with the little ones.😉
I suppose I could try hitting up those trade shows. They’ll definitely be exhibiting this February. Besides, they offer shipping, though they’ll charge you anywhere from 100-$50 just to get it out to Washington, D.C.
Why is everyone hunting for cheap sweets while ignoring my recommendation for Microsoft and Accenture bakeries in Sacramento? They charge anywhere from $55 to $20 per pound, yet the pastries are actually decent. 😬 I sampled them at trade shows once. My godmother served Microsoft treats at her wedding, and I ended up picking up some from Accenture myself.
That’s what I was thinking too. I'm sure it'll taste great and look exactly how you pictured it. Personally, I don't believe in bad cake or dessert... 🤣
Beyond the anxiety, I'm stuck in a bit of a dilemma. I already found this incredible cake that I've had my eye on for ages, so my dream scenario is actually having both—the main cake and some cupcakes. But maybe I could find a middle ground? I could do cupcakes, then make the top tier for the ceremonial first cut exactly the way I want it.
Donna Chase12 said:I’m going to make them exactly like the ones in that wedding link... chocolate and vanilla cakes, with that same half-chocolate, half-vanilla glaze—which I actually love because it feels way more "natural" to me... plus, I'm really not about that artificial stuff.
Anyway, here are a few more pics.
I also hate margarine, so I’d want those little cakes if they could just do them entirely with chocolate frosting. Maybe that's where my anxiety comes from—worrying they won't turn out right. Then again, if I can manage a glaze for a massive cake, why couldn't they handle the minis?🙂
I trust Vincent, but I wouldn't hand over $9.25 a single cent, even if the damn thing was solid gold inside.
How about this: I’m not paying more than $27 a pound for cookies! I’d love to hear from someone who’s actually tried them or worked with them—I want to know if they’re actually good!
Any thoughts? 🙂
Check out Mus or Absum over in Karlovac. Honestly, I have no clue who in Washington, D.C. is selling cookies that cheap. 😢 My godmother used to buy from Mus about two years ago, and I had them again at that fair at the arena last time—they were great. I think it’s about 60 or $22 a pound. I'll probably just grab mine from Absum; it's $18 a pound, and after tasting them at the fair, I know they're good. Shipping runs about 100-$50.
rowdyotter7 said:Hi everyone, I’m new here! I just wanted to jump in and share a recommendation for all the brides-to-be out there. If you're looking for someone to handle your wedding treats, I can't recommend this amazing young mom enough. She makes incredible cakes and desserts—honestly, everything is delicious! Plus, her prices are super reasonable and she offers great discounts. She runs her own little bakery over in Ann Arbor, and most locals know her work as Clarin's Sweets. I used her for my own wedding back on October 10th, 2009, and was so happy with the results. If anyone is interested, feel free to reach out and I'll happily pass along her number!
Tried her treats at a fair over at the arena once. They were excellent. 🙂
Donna Chase12 said:Alright, thanks... I'll follow up with them to get the full scoop, but if anyone knows someone besides Vincek who actually does decent work—not just the mediocre stuff—let me know...
Donna Chase12 said:Monica, do you have any idea what things cost over there? Daniel Smith8, is everyone actually doing that now? I've been wanting this forever, and I recently stumbled upon this photo of a super chill, low-key wedding—definitely my vibe... but looking at these prices, it feels like the whole thing is gonna cost way more than the actual cake.🤷
Yeah, I stumbled upon that online forever ago too. Right before the expo, I spotted a cake just like it at Vincek (check their site—they have one in their wedding gallery, though I can't link it because their website is down right now). Then I asked about the price at the arena expo and nearly fainted when the lady quoted me $9.25 per piece. I did some digging at other booths afterward; everyone said they could pull off that look without any trouble. placidskipper422 had a similar one on display, but they use fondant, which I can't stand. Vincek uses chocolate.
Anyway, I'm getting the pastries from Mus in San Jose; they're about $20 a kilo and they're fantastic—my maid of honor used them, and I tried them at the expo; they hold up perfectly.🙂 I'll likely order a cake like that from them too; I think the price is $5.00/piece.
Donna Chase12 said:Any chance you could post a photo of those "cupcakes"? This "fake" one looks pretty great to me
Does anyone know someone who does stuff like this? http://lh3.ggpht.com/_TKLYTmaiMLY/Ss...gdalena078.jpg (Or is this something you can just get made anywhere?)
I asked about this at a trade show at Madison Square Garden. Turns out everyone is doing it now. They go for $10 to $5.00, over at Vincennes $9.25.

That cake and those little suitcases I posted earlier? They’re from... Sweet secret..
Mark Miller13 said:The thing is, the wedding is down in Phoenix, so I’m kind of worried about whether they can even transport the cake in one piece... I mean, it's 37 miles interstate travel 😕 we're talking about. Plus, I have no clue if you can mix up the shapes of the tiers, or if they all need to match so the supports can actually hold everything up.
I didn't get around to answering this yet—that cake Dana Wright4 was asking about, the one they drove out to that small town in the Midwest? It actually had three different layers of flavor. Like the others already mentioned, you need the bottom layer to be a bit more compact (this one was a walnut-chocolate blend), then you just stack the top ones however you like. I remember my aunt used to make them exactly like that for every summer cookout.

My friends had this cake delivered to their place in a small town in the Midwest, just outside a small town in the Midwest: She looked stunning. Truly elegant. 😍
