Which printer is best for using generic ink? in Computer Peripherals ·
rustysurfer79, I guess I'm with you there. It just takes me maybe five or six months to burn through a whole set since I don't even turn the thing on for weeks at a time. Not really a huge deal, I suppose.
If I actually printed more often, I might take your advice seriously.

I picked up a Canon PIXMA last year. It runs fine using third-party inks from Washington, D.C.
The only thing is you probably need a solid firewall to block the printer from hitting the web... maybe just disable its WiFi too.
Actually bought a full set of ink for $26 (4 colors) this past Friday.

In my experience, the ink for the Epson Stylus Photo from Staples works fine, unlike what I've seen from ORINK or Printer Replenishment Service.

I've always just picked up replacements in New York and haven't really run into issues so far. 🙂
As long as it stays at a decent price, I guess I won't bother looking elsewhere.

My experience, I guess:
I used to have a Canon Pixma, but since finding third-party ink was such a nightmare, I just tossed it out for good. Once that died, I picked up an Epson Expression
that handles generic ink without any issues. I passed that one off to a cousin and grabbed an Epson Expression.
That one works with third-party ink too, more or less.
The catch is you probably need to install a decent firewall and block the printer from hitting the internet,
otherwise Epson might just lock you out. Some people claim you have to reinstall macOS if that happens—I haven't run into that yet, anyway.

Nah, it wasn't an accident.
Had a similar thing happen with Chrome
only had it installed to test it out, probably ran it maybe twice,
already forgot about it when Outpost started flagging that Chrome was trying to connect to the web,
but it was closed, yeah... no way.
Uninstalled it right then and there, so...

unbelievable
I only use IE 8 to browse CNN
and for over a month, it kept nagging me about some update it needed,
which I just kept ignoring.
then I opened it yesterday, saw some ads spinning at the top of the page
and the warnings were gone, so I guess it updated itself.
is that even normal??
Windows XP or Windows 7? in Software ·
First, just check if drivers actually exist for that specific model.
If it's an older machine, you'll probably find stuff for Windows XP, but for Windows 7, I guess it's anyone's guess. You should check that first; anything else is just speculation.
I thought about putting Windows XP on my new rig, but half the drivers weren't even available,
so why bother messing around with some sketchy driver combinations that might work—or might not?

Downloaded that 62 MB piece of junk and installed it, but it didn't do anything.

Tried about ten different Converters, but none of them will actually open a .dvr extension
they're all just dvr-ms Converters 😠

Is there a free one out there?
I've got this file recorded on a digital TV tuner in DVR format,
and I probably need to convert it into something a standard DVD player can actually read.

Best WiFi antennas for better range? in Computer Peripherals ·
Carol Peterson25 said:I guess I have a satellite phone, but the issue is how much a minute costs $5.00... not exactly built for long chats. As for an antenna, maybe I’d use it once I hit the harbor near 3.1 miles, assuming you could actually pick up a signal. My cousin isn't really into that kind of thing..

no 3.1 miles single omni antenna is going to catch anything, even if you have line-of-sight
but if you're hell-bent on trying, maybe look at this one

or this

it's probably the best gear you can find here in the States
Best WiFi antennas for better range? in Computer Peripherals ·
Carol Peterson25 said:hey.. anyone know a good long-range Wi-Fi antenna? I'm heading out on a boat soon and really need a way to check in with my family back home...

Forget it.
31 miles That thing has a decent range, but you have to aim it at the transmitter perfectly—like, down to the exact millimeter
or whatever degree you want.
And if you move even an inch, you lose the connection entirely.
Not sure how much that's even possible on a boat, unless it's just sitting still. 😕
How do I use client mode on my router? in Computer Peripherals ·
Benjamin Mitchell8 said:Here's the deal:

I'm trying to connect this (CN-WF514) router to my home Wi-Fi. My network is running on an AT&T router Boeing 787. There’s no encryption set up on the network.

When I try using another computer to link up via the Canyon router in Client mode, it just won't work. Maybe someone here has dealt with something similar?

ask over here, maybe
Best wireless antennas for better range? in Computer Peripherals ·
You probably should've asked that here
http://forum.pcekspert.com/forumdisplay.php?f=16

There isn't really a simple answer. I don't think there's actually a laptop out there where you can just plug in an external antenna
At the very least, you'd probably need a USB Wi-Fi adapter with an antenna on a cable
