10/01. @ KSET
ANDRE WILLIAMS WITH THE MARSHALL BROTHERS (SAD/Netherlands)
ATTILA THE HUN & QUALITY BUTCHERS (Netherlands)
Andre Williams, also known as
Black Godfather or
Mr. Rhythm, first cracked the US R&B top ten back in 1956 with "Bacon Fat." That kicked off a string of hits like "Greasy Chicken," "Humpin', Bumpin' & Thumpin'" (which
Fatboy Slim actually borrowed), "Rib Tips," "Pass the Biscuits," "Jail Bait," and plenty more. By the early '60s, he was working with Motown Records and Berry Gordy, starting out as a producer (working with
Marvin Gaye, Mary Wells, The Contours, Stevie Wonder...) before moving into A&R. In the latter half of the '60s, he jumped over to Chess Records as both a producer and performer. Then, in the early '70s, things took a dark turn when he started working with
Ike Turner. Ike pulled him into a world of cocaine that Andre barely escaped from, eventually finding himself struggling on the bridges of Chicago in the late '80s. In modern rock history,
The Cramps gave him a massive boost by covering his track "Jailbait" and even throwing two of his R&B hits onto the legendary "Born Bad" compilation series. But even that wasn't quite enough to bring the fallen king of raunchy R&B/soul/funk back into the spotlight.
It wasn't until the mid-'90s, thanks to a huge push from fans and guys like
Jon Spencer,
Dan Kroha, and
Mick Collins (of
The Gories), that Andre finally stepped back into the studio. In 1998, he teamed up with those two guys from The Gories in Detroit to record his definitive comeback album, "Silky," released that same year on in The Red Records. Fate smiled on Andre again, turning him into a hero for the new garage generation. On his very next album ("The Black Godfather," in The Red Records, 1999), he was backed by
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion,
The Dirtbombs,
Cheater Slicks,
Countdowns, and
Compulsive Gamblers. After two decades of battling addiction, Mr. Rhythm returned as a leader of modern garage production. While he used to run into trouble early on because his production style was so wild—and puritans labeled him "problematic" for his blatant sexuality—Andre Williams actually used those exact traits to fuel his musical comeback. Jon Spencer even brought him on as executive producer for the "Acme" album, and you can hear Andre alongside Spencer's Blues Explosion on the "Acme Plus" release in the song "Lap Dance." Later, Mr. Rhythm toured Europe, America, and Australia several times alongside the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Countdowns, and Cheater Slicks. A few months ago, he dropped a new album, Aphrodisiac, via Pravda Records, featuring the awesome
Diplomats of Solid Sound. Andre is still obsessed with sex—it's still the main theme here—but the sound leans much more toward soul than his recent records. Since last year, Andre has been visiting Europe again (his last real tour was back in 2001), but these days the tours are short, maybe 7-10 days. So this year, he's only playing 8 shows in 9 days, which makes this gig feel pretty exclusive. This time around, he's touring with a mixed American-Dutch lineup, including a drummer and keyboardist from the great Chicago group
The Goldstars, and the night will kick off with a set from the Dutch
Attila the Hun & Quality Butchers.
Tickets are available at the pre-sale price of $18 at the local CD shop and KSET. They'll be $23 at the door. Doors open at 8 PM, and the show starts at 9:30 PM.
