Are we actually talking about an outdoor concert here or a full-blown festival? Because, honestly, those two things aren't even in the same ballpark.
That’s just not even a fair comparison.

The Editors played at 5 PM, while Nerd didn't hit the stage until 10 PM. Obviously, the crowd was going to be way bigger for the later set. Plus, you can't really expect some mediocre British indie band—you know, those scrawny types—to draw the kind of massive crowd an American MTV hip-hop superstar pulls. And let's be honest, Pharrell Williams is one of the most overrated people in the music industry, so half the people were probably just there to see if he actually looked like he does on TV.

You're clearly not reading. 😠 The guy I was quoting was talking about how some bands put on a total disaster of a performance at festivals because they aren't "festival bands." Honestly, I think that's just nonsense.

It's true that some bands won't touch festivals, but it's also true that very few bands would actually turn down a festival if the money is right. And yeah, festival sets are more expensive than solo shows. The real question is whether it’s worth dropping like $75,000 on Belle and Sebastian :razbacujesebrojkama: just for maybe two or three thousand people to show up... or if you should just spend that cash on a bunch of cheaper bands that'll pull the same crowd and help with the "genre diversity" of the festival... 🤣
frozenranger52 said:Most of what you guys listed aren't even festival bands—it’s basically just whoever the editors picked, like Lily Allen last year. Honestly, it's pretty pathetic. If you want to obsess over Wilco and stuff like that, go ahead and keep geekin' out about it with those American hipsters. 😍

I feel like deciding whether a band is "festival material" or not is just totally arbitrary. Like, I don't even get it—what makes Wilco not a festival band? Or Pavement? Or The Flaming Lips? Or... anyone, really? I guess it’s all just vibes, which is kind of annoying.

Lily Allen’s set wasn't exactly a total disaster or anything—it was actually pretty fun. I mean, she was a little disappointing (at least for some people, I guess)... 😵 I mean, honestly—the whole seven-day casino vibe at Lollapalooza was actually pretty incredible. It’s just how things go, I guess.

I honestly think like eighty percent of the people on this forum who want to see Wilco would much rather catch them at a spot like Madison Square Garden or a dive bar run by a local rock band than deal with a massive festival—and yeah, I’m definitely one of those people. That doesn't mean they wouldn't be a killer choice for Coachella, some big rock group, or any other festival in the city or around here, though.
urbannomad30 said:I don't really get why people are praying for bands that have already toured here—I mean, yeah, I'd watch Fall again too, but still...

it's basically just Arcade Fire, Belle and Sebastian, or Sufjan Stevens... you know, those massive indie names I haven't even caught live yet. 🙂

I'd way rather see Portishead in a decent arena—maybe Madison Square Garden? 😬—instead of some random outdoor field...

Exactly!

But honestly, chances for Sufjan are super slim, and I feel like if B&S even decide to hit the festival circuit this summer, they're gonna be pricey and pretty selective about where they go. Arcade Fire seems like the most likely bet, I guess.

Still, all three would be absolute 🙏 legends. And man, imagine Okkervil River on that tiny little stage where Tricky and Yeah Yeah Yeahs played, maybe around midnight when the heat finally dies down a bit.
slypanther5 said:Portishead? No way. And Arcade Fire would be a massive stretch.

Do you actually know something I don't? 😉

And the Kaiser Chiefs. 😂

Honestly, just try to think of any album reviews or concert write-ups that actually stuck with you. These days, it feels like most people just remember the scathing takedowns, right?

I'm with you. Totally.

And if you really sit back and think about those shows you went to where you had a blast, half the time it’s just purely subjective stuff. You love the band, the drinks were good, the vibes were right, you were hanging with solid friends...

But when a show sucks? Man, you can find a mountain of "objective" reasons. Maybe they couldn't play their instruments, the sound system was garbage, the crowd was a mess, the guitarist was an arrogant jerk, or even just the beer tasted like piss...

It’s just way easier to weave those kinds of complaints into a fun, readable piece.

Alex Ramirez12 said:that whole thing about the takedowns... sometimes I feel like people in America used to be more obsessed with live music. There were all these incredible shows you could only dream about or had to travel abroad for. Values have shifted a bit, and I guess the sheer number of people consuming this stuff has changed too.

That makes sense too.

Alright, look, pick a song you actually like. Then grab one you absolutely can't stand.

Try doing this just for yourself—you know, like a little exercise—and try to argue for or against both in a few sentences. Just... maybe try to stay away from those super dramatic, overly subjective lines, like "this song makes my soul weep" or "his voice makes me want to rip my hair out" or "I'd rather have my fingernails pulled than listen to this while having coffee."

Just see which side comes easier to you. 😉

Honestly, it’s way easier to be constructive when you're picking a fight than when you're trying to give someone a compliment. I guess some people just can't stand taking the path of least resistance.

I've never composed anything in my life. 🤷

☕

I haven't really leaned into much Cassadaga lately—to be honest, that album kind of killed my interest in Bright Eyes for a bit. Then Conor’s solo stuff brought me back, then I drifted away again during the second record. Man, our relationship is just... complicated, I guess.

Southern Alias is actually a pretty solid band. 😳

That wasn't even a music festival—it was more like some "staged musical occurrence" or whatever you want to call it. 😬 It was just one day long—but man, it kept happening over two or three summers.

It felt just like a music festival—a few bands, everyone getting maybe forty-five minutes to an hour, and honestly, everybody was having a blast. Bud Light was playing (I can't quite remember the year, but they were actually a killer band back then) and—get this—they tossed a two-foot-long joint stuffed with newspaper right into the crowd from the stage. It was cheap, sure, but man, it worked. Especially if you happen to be sixteen. 😳 ...Coyote ( 😵 I mean, you've got The Ramones, maybe some Majke, probably The Pipettes and Let 3... honestly, maybe even a few others I can't think of right now.

I don't really know those lineups—can't say I remember them, honestly—but man, looking back, that was just such a perfect excuse for us kids to dive headfirst into drinking way too much and getting way too reckless with girls. Music wasn't even the main event back then, I guess.

Honestly, I don't know about any of these bands—except maybe Hewlett-Packard, I guess. 😵 I mean, I guess everyone mentioned probably played that stage at the Salad festival—since that was basically just the summer version of the Fido Brio tour, so the lineups were probably pretty much identical anyway...
Solid concert. Like, actually really good.

Sons of Anarchy totally threw me off with that Beck cover. I was singing along to the whole damn thing without even realizing who it was by. I kept asking everyone around me, but no one knew anything. It finally clicked right at the end, so I just started yelling "Beck! Beck!" and throwing my hands up. 🙂

It’s kind of messed up, honestly—we all listen to way too much music.

Marshmallows were more than alright. Matthew is a bit hard to understand sometimes, which was kind of annoying during certain parts. But man, the whiskey guy is a total legend. If I were a dude, I’d marry Vatroslava in a heartbeat. I even dug their new tracks, even though I hadn't heard them before, and I guess that’s like the biggest compliment I could ever give someone. Those songs just totally sucked me in, man.

Still, they need to practice a bit more. You know, the singing part. 😳

But seriously, it was such a vibe. I could go listen to them every week (I almost wrote "every day," but let's be real, that's an exaggeration—no band is worth listening to every single day, nobody could handle that)...

Anyway, seriously though, why wouldn't Spunk just ditch Kiza and bring Matthew on instead? 🤷

Huh?

We’re gonna be playing hits from the 'upcoming album'—which is basically just the whole damn thing—plus a few older tracks (take more pictures, Philip Morris, Liar). It’s gonna be freaking killer, man.

Man, you guys should just play Liar by Built to Spill.

☕
Man, those hits. 👋

Are you guys actually gonna play 'little fly'?

Come on, please.
