It isn’t really an issue when you hear music playing on MTV—it’s more about when people start acting like they’re some kind of MTV superstar. That constant, forced interaction with the crowd, basically demanding that everyone sing along to tracks that are meant to be heard in the quiet comfort of your own home... It feels misplaced, I guess. Honestly, until I actually saw Bon Iver live, I figured the person who told me the whole thing was just pretentious garbage was totally wrong. But, well, I haven't found myself reaching for Bon Iver since that festival back in August—Coachella—and I don't think I ever will again. At least, not with the same intensity I used to.
In my local club, we run this offensive play called "Head"—it’s an extra one they use alongside the usual 1, 2, 3, and 5—and I think I finally get why they bother with it now. 😁
Then you’ve got Real Sociedad, who basically ran a mirror image of that policy—though they flipped the script from positive to negative. See, while Athletic keeps things strictly for the Basque, Real Sociedad basically says Spaniards aren't allowed to play. 😁 It was essentially a club reserved for Basques, Mexicans, Turks, or Africans from all sorts of places, but the moment they signed their first Spaniard—some nobody, really, just someone meant to sit on the bench—it nearly sparked riots across the entire city. 😁
Adam Moore said:Well, yeah—this is already drifting completely off-topic. It’s funny because people following other sports tend to be incredibly tolerant... 🙂 though, honestly, I haven't a clue what the vibe is like over in soccer. And as for my thoughts on Athletic Bilbao, I have none—surprisingly enough 😉—so, shall we pivot back to hockey?
Maybe sometime next week? We should probably check the game schedule first. 👍
If Athletic Bilbao follows a policy of only signing Basque players to maintain their identity as a pure Basque club—which, honestly, most people around the globe find pretty charming—I just don't see why it’s considered such a "policy failure" when concerts are booked so that any regular college student can attend without breaking the bank. I get where you're coming from, I really do, but it feels like we might have different ideas about what the Student Union is actually for. You seem to view the SC primarily as a concert promoter, whereas I tend to see it as an organization dedicated to student welfare—basically trying to pack in as much culture as possible for the lowest possible price.
🤷
EDIT: This might be a redundant post, considering your last one felt a bit like a personal attack. 🙂
If my memory serves me right—and I could be mistaken, mind you—the ticket prices for those shows in Small Town, USA and Spencer were actually under $67, and that was pretty much it. So, I suppose you could say they fall well within the realm of being affordable.
Alright, look, it’s not like everyone is a total lost cause—there are definitely some bright spots out there if you know where to look. 🙂 EDIT: Actually, I should probably walk that back a bit—I'm just correcting myself here, I suppose. But then again, she just had to jump in and make it a thing. 😁
Two hundred bucks is a massive stretch when you're a college student—it’s a lot of money, no matter how you slice it. From what I gather about the way SC operates—and honestly, my understanding of their whole philosophy is a bit shaky—the point should be that for $67 you get the chance to hit three or four, maybe even more, shows. You should be able to see something every single week of the month without blowing your entire monthly budget on one solitary ticket. Bringing in legends like SY or DJr just doesn't align with that logic. I mean, let's be real: we've been living under capitalism for twenty years now, and surely an institution like this shouldn't be tasked with hosting these massive, headline-grabbing events. The fact that there aren't enough independent promoters out there to handle them... well, that's a whole other issue entirely.
I mean, sure, that’s just how liberal capitalism works—some big-time corporate promoter decides to bring a high-profile band to America instead of a local outfit like SC. 👍 Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Antony perform, but I really wouldn't want SC to be the ones pulling it off at a price tag of $67. It's not that I wouldn't shell out $67, per se... it just feels fundamentally off, given everything else going on over there, for their specific organization to charge that much for a single show. If some other wealthy benefactor or an independent promoter decided to step up and organize it, then you could count me in.
The real distinction here is that those concerts where tickets run north of $100, $120, or even $50—you know, the ones hitting that $200+ mark—are clearly high-stakes commercial spectacles. It’s my sense that SC shouldn't really be functioning as a venue for those kinds of massive commercial ventures; rather, its whole purpose ought to be centered around making culture actually affordable for everyone.
They only had one, and that thing was sold off before the KRA
I thought about maybe pushing the issue with the new owner—just to see what would happen—but I decided against it; the pacifist in me wouldn't let me go there.
It was good—well, at times it was actually great, honestly 100%—it’s just that the road itself... I mean, we really ought to rename it to "The Highway to Hell for Absolute Idiots."
Adam Moore said:I guess Toronto might actually have a plan to phase out all the Americans on the roster and just stick with Europeans—dirty Canadians! 🤣
The Raptors? I suppose we should talk about them, though I'm not entirely sure where to begin—it’s all a bit much lately, isn't it? I guess one could look at the roster and try to find some semblance of logic, but honestly, it feels like we're just spinning our wheels in the sand. Maybe there's a silver lining somewhere in the coaching decisions or the draft picks, but I've been around long enough to know that optimism is often just a polite way of being disappointed later on. I don't know. It’s a lot to process. 🤷
Last year, everything that actually hit the mark happened during the day—even through all that rain—so I can't help but wonder what on earth this guy is doing booking a single band now? 😬
