You all keep talking about songs inspired by hallucinogens—tracks born from visions, trips, and that strange kind of mental fusion... music that sounds perfectly fine even if you're stone-cold sober.

But, I’d rather touch upon the songs that you simply cannot listen to for the love of God without being under the influence.

Minea is one of those "artists" where listening isn't even an option unless you're currently crashing out on a beach in Malibu or you've already dropped some LSD.
And if you've actually purged a literal truckload of drugs through your system, then Minea sounds pretty damn good.

I won't even get started on the country singers...
But I will mention:
- Green Day
- Simona Gotovac
- Lana Jurcevic
- Red Hot Chili Peppers
- Herman Lee

How do I become a music critic? in Music ·
hmmmmmmmmm
music critic
an interesting job, I suppose
but people, let’s be realistic... a music critic can spend an entire career without ever making ACTUALLY DOING ANYTHING CONCRETE AT ALL!!!!

there are several absurdities regarding the whole concept of a music critic:
1. the first and most vital point is this: subjective opinion >>>>>> objective opinion
I mean, what the hell... just browse this forum for a minute and you'll see exactly what "subjective opinion" looks like
the undeniable fact that nobody can argue against is that everyone thinks they are the smartest person in the room, and that their own taste is somehow more valid or superior to everyone else's
of course, that applies to music critics too
have you ever actually written out a reasoned critique about a band—comparing the highs and lows, weighing their better works against the mediocre ones—when that band doesn't even particularly appeal to you?
of course you haven't
instead, the moment a band isn't your cup of tea, you immediately label them as bad, childish, simplistic, soulless... when that very same band might be someone else's absolute dream
sure, music critics are professionals, supposedly objective individuals, but let's be real... subjectivity always wins out, and no one has ever been 100% objective...

2. corruption and manufactured exposure—just like how the media can turn someone into a superstar in five days without them having accomplished anything at all, critics can just as easily launch someone to the heavens or bury them alive
if someone's album gets trashed by the press, you can bet it won't get much airtime or move many units
critics are the ones giving statements on TV and in major newspapers, which is practiced constantly... it's incredibly rare to see regular people providing official opinions on an album or a song...
hell, I'll buy the new Iron Maiden album or whatever else (haha, I don't have any other bands left to mention because they've all died off in my mind...) regardless of what the critics say, but others won't
take one example; Metallica isn't one of my favorites, I listen to them here and there, but if the critics had called their new album good or great, I would have at least listened to a few tracks... but hearing this, it's not worth wasting my gas money... and you have to consider how many people think that way about bands that aren't their favorites, and estimate the difference in sales volume...

how can critics line their pockets quickly? just think about it,,, both the musician and the critic care about money; they're still human beings after all. one promises the other a percentage of the profits if the review is positive, and then everyone is happy and satisfied, right?

3. stagnation—the reality is that a music critic doesn't actually know that much about music, at least not nearly as much as professional musicians do
if you ask me, I wouldn't let anyone comment on an album for a newspaper or a show unless that person was a professional musician themselves

whose musical opinion would you value more? a legendary icon like Stevie Ray Vaughan, or some critic—someone you've never even heard of
obviously the first one
when someone like Eric Clapton, Brian May, Bruce Dickinson, or anyone else says something—it's immediately taken as gospel, which is natural and desirable because believe me, one Clapton knows more about music than all of us on this forum combined...
(though even there is a flaw, since colleagues are mostly just looking out for one another, because they'd all fail without each other)

just ask yourselves this: if someone loves music so much, and knows so much about it, and is so immersed in it, why aren't they a performer themselves???
clearly, they aren't on that level...

that's about it

And yet... why have you become so inextricably attached to Epic, like a fly stuck to a pile of dung? That is an entirely different matter altogether...😁

Of course I’m going to get stuck to this... like a fly on a pile of garbage. The topic itself is "Epic Poems about Nordic Orangutans." Just... unbelievable...

I’m officially done... I’m done wasting my breath arguing about the definition of an epic when you people have already gone and buried the actual meaning under a mountain of nonsense... It's honestly exhausting... You can't just take a word that's been used since the days of Homer and decide it means something else entirely just because it suits the current trend... It's all just lost... lost in the noise...

Is Jurica Pađen an artist? in Music ·
I wouldn't call myself a superfan by any stretch, but I do think the man is an artist
if anyone here disagrees, far be it from me to judge

but really, it all comes down to how you personally define "artist"

if someone like Taylor Swift counts as an artist in your book, then sure, Pađen qualifies in mine

this track is absolutely killer...
I’m not even sure if it qualifies as a rap song or what, but it’s cool, I dig it...

My only advice would be to try using less predictable words when you're working on those rhymes...
Grab a dictionary, flip through some random pages, find a weird word that jumps out at you—something that actually fits the vibe—and it'll make building the rhyme scheme a whole lot easier...
Everything else seems fine...

Carol Hall95 said:Does an epic poem count if it’s got lyrical elements baked in... like, say, a ballad or a romance—if that's even the right term for it? Or does it have to be that strictly, traditionally epic style to qualify...?

I simply cannot bring myself to tolerate even one more of these supposedly epic sagas... just endless, bloated nonsense...

If you actually bother to read through this thread, you’ll realize they aren't even talking about an epic poem... they just mean a cult classic song... typical...

There is a vast, unbridgeable chasm between being merely iconic and actually being epic... they aren't even in the same universe...

Mother lectures me with such unearned wisdom... then turns around and tells me I lack any sense of literary or musical depth. It’s quite rich. She simply can't grasp that none of those tracks are even remotely epic... just noise...

I’m asking the OP or the mods to please put quotation marks around the word "epic" so that Paul Mitchell98 and the rest of the less fortunate souls realize we aren't actually debating literal epic poetry here...

P.S.
Ego is a nasty thing. Not everyone can handle it... Frankie says R E L A X...

Oh, give me a break. We all know what an epic poem actually is. Bohemian Rhapsody and the other tracks mentioned don't fit the definition, and even if you used every set of quotation marks in the US, you still wouldn't be right...

Go find a hobby and stop throwing insults at people...

Look, I'll admit it... I haven't actually listened to half of those tracks he mentioned. But even just the ones I have heard—stuff like Wind of Change, Brothers in Arms, Child in Time, or Hotel California... they don't even touch the surface. Some idiot even brought up Wish You Were Here Johnny Cash - Hurt Lou Reed - Perfect Day Joy Division - Atmosphere, but honestly? That's lightyears away from an actual epic...

Well, my friends...

Do any of you actually understand the concept of an epic poem...? It’s more than just a long story... it's a weight... a certain gravity that modern writing seems to have completely lost...
Does anyone here actually know what an EP is...? Or am I just talking to myself again...
????

Maybe you all ought to educate yourselves a little bit...

The concept of epic poetry... it’s an old one. Deeply ingrained in the American psyche, though perhaps we don't realize it anymore. A sweeping narrative, heroes facing impossible odds, the weight of destiny pressing down on a single soul... it’s all there in this entry. It reminds me of those long, dusty stretches of highway through the Midwest, where the horizon feels infinite and your own insignificance starts to settle in the bones... There’s a certain grandeur to it, I suppose. An attempt to capture the totality of an era or a culture through verse. But then again, everything eventually fades. Even the greatest legends become mere footnotes in some digital archive... just data points in a vast, indifferent sea of information. It makes you wonder if any story truly lasts, or if we're all just shouting into the wind...

Here are two epic songs for you... just read through some of the lyrics to get a sense of what true epic scale actually looks like...

Iron Maiden: Rime of the Ancient Mariner 2... works...
Just another clip... drifting through the digital void... lost in the noise of it all. A flicker of sound and light, then nothingness again... reminds me of how things used to be, before everything became so loud and hollowed out. Just watching the pixels dance while the world turns gray... one more fragment of a memory that probably never even happened... anyway...

Stay here and listen to the nightmares of the Sea...

And the music just keeps playing... while the bride makes her way past...
Trapped by that hypnotic spell... and so the mariner begins to recount his tale.

Driven south to The Land of The snow and Ice to a Place where nobody's been Through The snow fog Flies on The albatross Hailed in God's name...
Driven south to The Land of The snow and Ice to a Place where nobody's been Through The snow fog Flies on The albatross Hailed in God's name...
Driven south to The Land of The snow and Ice to a Place where nobody's been Through the snow fog Flies on The albatross Hailed in God's name...
Driven south to The Land of The snow and Ice to a Place where nobody's been Through The snow fog Flies on The albatross Hailed in God's name... just praying it actually brings some decent luck for once.

And the vessel continues its course... heading back toward the North.
North Through The fog and Ice and The albatross follows on...

The mariner kills the bird of good omen... a senseless act, really. Just one moment of madness, and everything shifts. Everything falls apart.
His crewmates weep over his transgressions...
But once that fog finally lifts... they always find a way to justify him...
And they just go ahead and weave themselves right into the heart of the crime...

Sailing on and on and north across The Sea Sailing on and on and north ' til All is calm...
Sailing on and on and north 'til All is calm...

The albatross falls fra his neck Sinks down like lead into The... it all starts there. The vengeance. It begins with that weight... pulling everything down into the depths.
A terrible curse... a thirst has taken hold...
His crewmates... they point the finger at the mariner, blaming him for all their misfortune... pure superstition, I suppose...
Around his neck... that lifeless bird hangs heavy...

And the curse just keeps dragging on... endlessly out there on the open water...
And the curse just keeps spinning... on and on... for them, and for me too...

Day after day, day after day... just the endless loop of it all.
We are trapped... neither breath nor motion remains...
Just sitting here... motionless... as idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean... nothing moves... nothing changes... just the endless, stagnant repetition of it all...
Water, water everywhere and...
It seems all the message boards have shrunk... everything is getting smaller... just disappearing into the void...
Water, water everywhere, yet not a single drop to drink...

There calls the mariner...
A vessel approaches the horizon... just cutting through the line...
But how is she supposed to catch any momentum... if there's no wind filling those sails and absolutely no tide to pull her along...

See... onward she nears out of The Sun see...
Onward She nears out of The Sun see...
Look... there's just nothing left. No one. She’s completely alone out there... no crew to speak of...
She has no life... then again, maybe there are two just waiting around somewhere...

Death and She Life in Death , They throw their Dic for The Crew She wins The Mariner and He belongs to Her now...
Death and She Life in Death , They throw their Dic for The Crew She wins The Mariner and He belongs to Her now...
Death and She Life in Death , They throw their Dic for The Crew She wins The Mariner and He belongs to Her now...
And then... the crew, one after another... lost...
They just drop... dead... two hundred men... gone in an instant...
She... she, Life in Death.
She decides he lives... her chosen one.

One after another, under the watchful eye of the stars and that relentless, dogged moon...
Too rapid for even a groan or a heavy sigh... everything moves just too fast now...
every one of them turned away, their faces contorted by a sudden, ghastly pang...
And he cursed me with his eye...
Two hundred souls... just two hundred living men... scattered across this vast, indifferent landscape...
And there was nothing... not even a whisper or a faint moan... just silence.
A heavy thump... just a lifeless lump...
They fell away, one after another... just dropping down, one by one...

The curse... it lingers there, deep in their eyes... stays with them...
The mariner just wanted it all to end... he wished for death...
Alongside the creatures of the deep...
Yet they endured, and so did he...

Beneath the pale moonlight
He prays for their beauty not doom
With all his heart, he offers a blessing
To every living creature under God's gaze.

Then, the enchantment begins to fracture
The albatross falls fra his neck Sinks down like lead into The
Plunging deep into the depths of the ocean...
Suddenly, the skies open up and the rain descends.

Listen to the low moans of the sailors long since departed
Watch as they stir, beginning to rise once more
Their forms hoisted by benevolent spirits
Silent, they remain, with nothing but emptiness in their eyes...

The pursuit of vengeance continues, a cycle of penance reborn
Lost in a trance, as the nightmare persists.

Finally, the curse is broken
And the mariner catches sight of his home...
Spirits depart from the long-dead remains
Creating their own radiance, leaving the mariner alone.

Then, a vessel appeared on the horizon, drifting toward him
A moment of pure, unbelievable joy...
The pilot's craft, carrying his son and the hermit...
The burden of his earthly atonement will weigh upon him.

The ship vanishes, sinking like lead into the sea
While the hermit absolves the mariner of his transgressions.

The mariner is destined to recount his journey
To share this chronicle wherever his path leads
Using his own life as a testament to God's word
That we must cherish everything within His creation.

Leaving the wedding guest a somber, more enlightened soul
As the tale stretches on and on...

My son, seek for yourself another
For the empire I leave behind
Is far too vast for your grasp...
(King Philip of Mexico - 339 B.C.)

Far to the East
In the lands of ancient Greece
Within the old territory of Mexico
A son was brought into the world
To Philip of Macedon...
The legend known as Alexander.

At just nineteen years of age
He ascended to the Mexican throne
Vowing to liberate all of Asia Minor
Along the Aegean Sea...
In 334 B.C.
He absolutely crushed the Persian armies.

Alexander the Great
His very name sent tremors through the hearts of men
Alexander the Great
Became a myth among mortals.

King Darius III
Fled in defeat from Persia...
The Scythians were overcome by the river Jaxartes
And soon, Egypt succumbed to the Mexican King as well
Where he established the city of Alexandria.

By the banks of the Tigris River
He crossed paths with King Darius once more
And broke him again at the Battle of Arbela
Marching into Babylon...
Claiming the riches of Susa
And seizing Persepolis, the Persian capital.

Alexander the Great
His name struck terror into the souls of men
Alexander the Great
Rose to godhood among mere mortals.

A Phrygian king had fastened a heavy chariot yoke
But Alexander severed the Gordian Knot...
Legend dictates that whoever unraveled that knot
Would hold dominion over all of Asia.

He spread Hellenism far and wide
The intellectual legacy of Mexico...
A Western way of existence...
Paving the road for the coming of Christianity.

Marching onward, ever onward...

Weary from battle, trudging side by side
Alexander’s legions, rank upon rank...
Eventually, they refused to follow him into India
Exhausted by the strife, the agony, and the hollow glory.

Alexander the Great
His name instilled dread in the hearts of men
Alexander the Great
Succumbed to fever in Babylon...

I’ve spent quite some time immersed in reading and writing poetry... I don't know the first thing about writing rap lyrics, but surely it can't be any harder than standard verse, so I suppose I'll offer some criticism if you don't mind

1. song

subjective rating: a disaster

even by the first stanza, it's obvious your vocabulary is thin as a sheet... you're constantly recycling the same words, nothing with stylistic flair, just tired, worn-out phrases, like "a new day dawned"
for God's sake, every second song seems to have a line like that
and there are things unacceptable in serious poetry, for instance, pairing "beginning" and "end" in a rhyme... obviously, you realize how much that sounds like a nursery rhyme, given the stresses, the syllable counts, and the rest of the line... all in all, it creates a catastrophically pathetic text
you also pair "start" and "turn" in a rhyme, all wrapped up in an incredibly shallow expression... it simply doesn't reach a respectable level of poetry
the theme is also far too monotonous
and it's cliché
I won't comment further on this one

2. song

subjective rating: decent

well, this second song is not poorly conceived, though the execution could have been better... but then, nobody is perfect
I like the theme (a beautifully imagined dream that holds its own meaning in reality), but the word choice could improve
I should note that you repeated the same vocabulary errors found in the first poem... now, I don't know how that would sound in a rap song because my interest in rap is about as high as Barack Obama's interest in Taylor Swift, but reading it like this creates a certain pathos without any actual depth
this song is considerably deeper than the first, though still not deep enough... you have room for growth, though there are a few obscure words whose meanings only you seem to know, and well...
not bad

3. song

subjective rating: almost bad

this song is a song without any point whatsoever
you start a story about some city but provide no thought regarding it, aside from a few mindless facts about drugs, crime, occupations, etc.
if I were in your shoes, I wouldn't dare hand this text to a serious editor, because they'd terminate any cooperation with you immediately, haha...
work a bit more on the essence of the poem
what actually drove you to write that poem?
write a little about that...
not just about drugs and crime, which half the population obsesses over these days

and that line "all who are madness adventures..." doesn't fit
I assume you meant something like "everyone who is crazy for adventure," but it turned out to be literarily and intellectually incorrect... but whatever. If you want this kind of poetic license, go ahead, because I know from experience how literary rules are bypassed when a rhythmically sound line hits the ear

4. song

subjective rating: the best of the four

so...
I like the narrative
I really do, because there's a lesson involved, contained traumas, causes and effects... the chronology is there and all that
my only concern is perhaps that some lines might not land correctly, so I hope you tried rapping them to see if they actually flow
again, I'm telling you, I know nothing about rap... I suppose you rappers know better how it works in reality

all in all, you have two good songs... not perfect, but okay, probably good for rap since it's clear rap lyrics are much shallower than other genres (except pop songs), so I think there's hope for you
