Which PSU should I buy? in Desktops ·
Uncle Gilbert just can't get this update to work 😬

Maybe grab a slightly faster CPU, you've got enough RAM, and just swap in a better GPU—maybe a Radeon HD 5770, or a GeForce GTX 460, maybe an HD 5750 or a GTS 450? Those are some of the newer cards I think would work fine. 🙂

But honestly, it all comes down to what kind of power supply you're running (brand and wattage) and how much cash you're actually looking to drop. 🙂

Just tell them it’s throwing artifacts, maybe the memory is shot or something...
Either way, those guys at Walmart won't even bother checking it themselves—they'll just ship it off to a repair center. 🙂

The HD 5670 is the only one in that bracket (but just so you know, it’s actually a step down from the HD 4850).

depends on which 🙂

AMD vs Nvidia

the GeForce GT 730 actually edges it out --> http://www.legitreviews.com/images/r...70-heaven9.jpg

my advice? hunt for used gear. you can score something twice as powerful for the same cash on Facebook Marketplace if you find a decent warranty...

nothing much out there right now, but maybe wait a bit or check Craigslist 🙂

ATI HD 6850 vs. GTX 460... which one?
Neither really needs a massive power supply—just look for cards with decent cooling. 👍

The HD 6850 pulls slightly ahead in gaming, though the gap is tiny. That said, NVIDIA’s CUDA cores are a huge plus if you're doing heavy lifting like decoding or complex calculations...

Given your resolution, I'd say a 768MB GTX 460 from somewhere like $400 would work just fine. 🙂

Nonexistent graphics card..

Maybe you meant the GeForce GTX 250? It’s a solid card, though it's definitely starting to show its age with all the new stuff hitting the market lately. Old architecture, you know?

Thinking about picking it up? What kind of price are we talking?

My external hard drive just died in Computer Peripherals ·
It’s been years... haven't you thought about just controlling the damage and swapping in a new drive?

You could try plugging it directly into your PC. Maybe it'll wake up? Who knows, maybe the enclosure's electronics just died. Worth a shot, right?

Such an expensive headache... :/

I think you can do better than a 4850, maybe a GTS 450 or an HD5770, but honestly, why bother?
If you have the chance to snag an NVIDIA GTX 460... just go for it. 🙂

The only thing is, I feel like it might be a bit overkill for now...
But hey, at least you'll be set for the future.

What kind of 400W power supply are you running? Some cheap generic brand?

P.S. That EVGA 550 W is actually a solid choice. 👍

You guys totally misread him... 😁
He didn't even mention his monitor resolution...
But if you want my take, go with the Radeon HD 5670
Since anything better is overkill anyway, plus for under $600 $233 it’s an absolute beast...

Also, quick question... how much RAM are we talking about?

720p 😬

Samuel Martinez said:So guys, just picked up an AMD Radeon HD 5770 Hawk from HGspot. They even threw in the installation for free, and a buddy of mine handled the drivers... Honestly, feels like a massive upgrade and I'm loving it. Everything's running smooth... thanks to everyone for the help and the effort!

Nice one 👍

I already answered you right below, but apparently, you aren't reading 🤷

I doubt he will, but still, just ask.🙂

Max Resolution is 2048x1536@85 Hz🙂
It'll run at Full HD... but what’s the actual picture quality going to look like? Who knows. Some people are gonna hate how it looks on an LCD, while others might think it's fine, I guess...

Alexander Moore67 said:Wait, there's an Nvidia GeForce 7800 on this board? Using AGP?!
And that’s exactly why I’m making the jump to the 5670.
Don't tell me the Nvidia GeForce 7800 is actually faster than the 5670. Seriously?

I guess I’d just pass out and call it a day then. $83 So I went ahead and grabbed the AMD Athlon X4 630 right away. Why wait? 👍
Sure, if your bank account can actually handle it. 🙂

boldcanyon3 said:So, I picked up this card for a buddy because his old GeForce Leadtek 8600GTS 256MB finally kicked the bucket. What can you do?
The only issue is that the specs say it's PCI Express 2.0 x16.
And his motherboard is... A little bit of a Samsung Galaxy Note II?

Of course it has PCI Express, but they just didn't specify if it's 2.0...

Will that card actually run okay? Everything else in the build is pretty dated too—running an AMD Athlon II X2 4400+—but let’s face it, people don't just have cash lying around for a total overhaul. Is this setup even decent?
What's the damage? $193 It's totally fine.

So, will a card on PCI Express 2.0 x16 actually work with all the older stuff? 🙂 Or the other way around...
It’ll only run at the lowest speed—like, 1.1 from the motherboard. What else can you expect?

Are you kidding me? Seriously? You're suggesting an AMD Radeon HD 5770 (I actually own one) when the Nvidia GTX 460 is clearly better for the exact same price? (Well, I'm looking at the 768MB version, though I put the 1GB one in this build)... 👍
Who in their right mind builds a new rig for $500 and picks a dual-core CPU? For that kind of cash, you can easily grab a quad-core. 👍

$1672

Just buy a cooler later...
The motherboard only has one IDE port, so you're limited to maybe two HDDs there...
And since you'll run out of ports pretty fast, I added a new SATA expansion card to the build...

Can delete this now; the mod moved the question to the right thread. 🙂

Hey, if you're hanging out somewhere near Chicago, I might be able to lend a hand.. 🙂

But honestly, Nathan Reyes59 already covered everything. You can't just force a graphics card into a slot where it doesn't fit 👍 (I mean, some people have tried cutting the hardware, but those are just extreme cases of total stupidity)..

Nathan Reyes59 said:So now he's sitting on 2 gigs (4x512), but his big plan is just moving up to 2 GB of DDR3? I guess he thinks he'll actually see a performance bump over DDR2... hmmm, I don't know. Doesn't exactly sound like a massive leap forward to me.

http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/21/...5_micron).html

And he won't gain anything from the RAM upgrade either...

Nathan Reyes59 said:I don't see much of an upgrade moving from this to an x2 240 with 2GB DDR3 RAM. Sure, it’s faster, but 🤷

Why not just pop that HD5670 into what you already have to boost the rig? At least it's cheaper, right?

Sorry if I'm overstepping or if you've got other plans in mind.

Well, now I see that's actually his plan...

Kind of a bad move, if I'm being honest. 🤷

Aside from that extra gig of RAM, everything else feels pretty much the same...
