The Little Mermaid (2023) in Movies ·
Even though she's a mythical creature, Ariel is originally from Denmark.

I feel a little silly saying this, but since she's a Black person now, I was really hoping to see that iconic red hair. I guess I just wonder if it'll look right on her.🤷
Black people rarely let white actors play characters from their own history or cultural heritage—if you want to call it that. They tend to stick to their own stories. Meanwhile, it feels like white actors are constantly being forced to make up for things.
Another issue is how they handle Asian characters in Hollywood films by casting white actors instead (like in Ghost in the Shell, Alohi, etc.).
We'll see.

I thought the movie was great too. Maybe a little slow until the Genie showed up, but after that, it was honestly awesome... You get the romance, the fun, and the laughs... Plus, all the songs were really good and didn't bore me at all
I had a pretty good time, honestly. There are a few plot holes and the editing is kind of messy—it jumps from one scene to the next a bit too much—but I still loved it. Eve and Emma are definitely eye candy 😍

dustytinker52 said:Oh my God,🙄 how old are you, thirteen? If his facial expressions come across to me as repulsive, off-base, and exhausting, then that’s just my honest take. It wasn't "perfectly" acted; in fact, it wasn't even good, from what I can see. Most critics seem to be praising nothing but Alicia (and rightfully so)... and yeah, I think that rating actually makes sense because it mostly reflects the failed performance of the lead actor.

Nah, I'm only 12. 🥳

You can be whatever you want with me, honestly. It's all subjective anyway. I guess that's why we even have this forum, right?
If your absolute best comeback is basically saying "I'm only 13," after I just explained exactly why you're missing the point, then yeah... you aren't going to get very far on this forum. I guess.

I know some people in real Life Lily who struggle with their sexuality, and whenever they find themselves in an awkward spot—like when they seem out of place or just super insecure—they start smiling. I guess that's just how it goes. I guess I'm just here. Maybe I'll say something later. Man, Eddie really nailed those scenes. He was just so good at playing those situations.

Justin Rogers5 said:Because Eddie is a handsome guy with interesting features, while the real Lily was a balding man who would still look like a man even with a wig and makeup on. But I guess they had to do it, since nobody would pay to see a movie where Lily plays Danny DeVito. That whole makeup thing feels pointless to me.☕To ušminkavanje mi je bez veze.

What kind of casting is this...

I guess I'm mostly on the same page as you. But honestly, Hollywood does this way too often:

Wolf from Wall Street
real Life Wolf vs. Leo

Erin Brockovich
real Life Erin vs real Life Joy vsJulia Roberts Alan Turing

Julia Roberts Alan Turing
real Life Alan vs vs. Benedict Cumberbatch

Joy (Mangano)
Real Life Joy vs. Jennifer Lawrence

I guess there are more examples like this.
For roles like these—where the actors weren't quite as globally famous back then that everyone knows exactly what they look like, sort of like how people recognize Picasso or Frida Kahlo—I'm totally fine if they don't nail the physical resemblance perfectly. I think it's okay to focus more on the costume design and the actual performance of the character instead.

Justin Rogers5 said:Eddie and Lili Elbe look nothing alike. If you're going to paint such an important figure, at least try to make them resemble the actual person.
Way too heavy, way too depressing. I actually turned it off halfway through. It feels like it was just manufactured for an Oscar, and the acting is totally forced.

Why though?
It’s not like this is the first or last time they cast someone who looks somewhat similar just because they're a great actor.
And honestly, there isn't a massive difference between how "real life Lili" looked and Eddie... facial features aren't really the point for the story being told.

All these comments about doing it for the Oscar are getting old, maybe even for 🥱

Rebecca Peterson3 said:Low? Good grief, even Leo has been chasing Oscars for years by playing essentially the same archetype over and over again, so what of it?...

The film itself is poorly executed, shallowly written, and the actors did about as well as they could given the circumstances...

I guess I could try to make a case for it, but honestly, it’s hard to know where to start without more context. Maybe if you give me a specific topic or an idea to work with, I can weigh in. I'm not really one for long-winded debates, but I'll give it a shot if there's something to talk about. Just let me know.

Harold Cox28 said:Watched it on Saturday.

Neither I nor my wife actually enjoyed it. It was way too long, overacted, and just felt heavy. Basically... an Oscar cliché. Definitely not as good as The King's Speech. And the lead actress has this olive complexion while trying to play a Danish woman... it just didn't work. Plus, it’s depressingly bleak, and I usually like dramas.

Too heavy? I mean, what kind of drama is that if you're just... fine with it? ovo Too much? Maybe. 🕺

And this comment about The Danish Girl... 🤦 That stereotype that all Scandinavians are white as cheese... I guess it's a thing. 🤣 Vikander is actually a Swedish woman, I guess.

dustytinker52 said:Everything worked for me except for Eddie—he just didn't quite nail the role... I can't think of anyone who could have done it better right now, but he certainly wasn't it. That shy little smile Lili gives? It honestly just gets tedious...😵

You haven't got a clue.
That smile and those facial expressions... they just hit the mark. It captures that whole feeling of trying to suppress who you really are. I guess it’s just spot on.

I thought this movie was just wonderful. Everything about it—the plot, how they handled the psychology of what Einar/Lili was going through, even the costumes and the sets... it was all great. And the acting? I don't know who I liked better, Alicia or Eddie. They just seemed to complement each other perfectly.

My only real gripe is that they didn't quite show the full reason behind her death. In reality, just like how it's portrayed in the movie, Lili wanted to fully transition into being a woman. She ended up passing away due to complications from her fourth surgery—an organ transplant—because her body rejected it, which led to heart failure and infections. I guess they just skipped over those details.

Honestly, it’s a great movie all around. That 6.8 on IMDb just doesn't seem right to me. I guess it deserves better.
Big Eyes (2014) - Tim Burton in Movies ·
Finally watched it yesterday. It’s out in theaters here now, but I just found it online.
It would've been nice to see it on the big screen, though. Since the story takes place in San Francisco, California, there are some really beautiful shots. Plus, I think those close-ups of the eyes would hit harder in a theater.
I'd give it a 6.5 or maybe a 7/10.

I had certain expectations since it's a Tim Burton film, but it actually surprised me.
You can definitely feel his style; it has those signature elements, but it feels different from his usual stuff.
It's more grounded, I guess.
If you saw the trailer, there aren't many huge surprises, but I still enjoyed watching it even knowing what was coming.
Christoph Waltz and Amy Adams are so good that the movie never feels boring.
Waltz overacts a little at times, but people like him—like Keane—are probably actually like that in real life.
Amy Adams perfectly plays that submissive, compliant woman who eventually finds herself with the Jehovah's Witnesses because of everything happening.
I don't want to spoil the ending, but despite everything, the movie left me with a good feeling. It's a feel-good
movie. Lana's song I Can Fly🙂 at the end during the credits... it just worked perfectly with the mood of the film.

Alexander Adams94 said:What kind of shallow excuses are these? "I just want to get home from work, light up a cigarette, and have sex without anyone yelling at me." It’s as if those are somehow more creative pursuits than raising a child. Unless you're in a rock band with a career more demanding than changing damn diapers, what are we talking about here? You'll light a smoke and have some quiet time in bed—such a massive deal. The reasoning is just incredible: "A kid would get in my way because then I couldn't sit in my armchair, smoke, and sleep around without interruptions." As if you've written a masterpiece or recorded a legendary album and are far too creative to be bothered by a baby because your head is bursting with new ideas. Honestly, could you at least come up with reasons that show a slightly higher intellectual level than smoking after work and wanting peace and quiet? People create historical works of art and don't let dirty diapers or a crying infant stop them, yet apparently, a baby's cry is going to ruin your ability to smoke a cigarette and have some intimacy. Don't try to sell me those lines.

I guess there's truth to it, though. You do what you want with your life. Whether that's hooking up, smoking, writing books, or composing songs. ☕

Ashley Johnson6 said:I'm guessing the 88 in your handle is your birth year...

Just wait a few more years until those hormones and brain chemistry start kicking in and flip your whole perspective upside down. I know you feel like it's impossible right now, but we'll talk in 5-6-7 years...😉

And then you'll realize that everything you mentioned with such disgust is actually a huge joy, not a chore.

As for having kids... man, I don't know... I'm not a woman, I haven't lived it myself, I've just watched from the sidelines—and it sounds incredibly cliché, I know—but there isn't any experience in life that even comes close to it. None.

I'm the same age as her, and 26 is plenty of time to know if you want kids or not.

I want them, mostly because I want to raise a little being with someone I love—someone who's half me and half them.
I love him, and I want to watch him see what we build together.
It's interesting to me. It's like we're creating a little alien that's a mini version of us. 😬
And I think it'll be awesome for us to 🎉 travel, hit the beach, mess around, and watch movies together as a trio. It could honestly just be better.
And that phase where they're pooping, crying, and throwing up? That lasts maybe three years max. The rest of our lives we'll have together for the good stuff. 😍

But I respect people who don't feel that way. 👍
By the way, honey, discussions like this exist over on the women's forums. I think there are over a hundred pages of it. 🤔

And what if she gets fired?
There are unemployment benefits while you look for a new gig, at least in places like France where workers actually have more protection than our own members of Congress.

It’s kind of like Sophia's choice with those warts.

This was getting on my nerves too. But I guess I gave myself an explanation earlier, like some random stranger would. Since she deals with mental health issues, maybe changing habits or her whole environment would be really hard for her.
Still, I don't know how she'd handle going back to a job where she isn't wanted.
+ That bonus was confusing.
Was it annual? Monthly? And why can she only get it if she gets fired? The boss claims it's because of the competition. 😵

Marion is a great actress. The themes and character work are interesting, but honestly, the movie just bored me.

goldendrifter19 said:I think the way they handled their relationship was off. It just didn't feel believable, like there was no chemistry or whatever. There’s too much talking and not enough actual showing.

I guess you could compare that connection to the one Serena has with Galloway; both feel pretty thin. It's like the audience just has to accept that she's this femme fatale who makes men lose their minds. So, both guys basically clear the path for Serena's happiness, no matter what. Especially since Galloway's motivation is kind of fuzzy. The movie has a lot of gaps like that.

I don't know, maybe not for me. I suppose at first, when he started seeing her, he wasn't really into it because she had an agenda. But once he got to know her, he probably got hooked on how smart and independent she was. They were always together, having sex, stuff like that.
He liked having someone who was basically his equal. But in that relationship, she more loved him. That's why she was always looking for validation, I guess.

And about Galloway—how?
His mom was also clairvoyant like him, and she saw a prophecy where he’d lose his hand but be saved by a woman.
So, he feels like he owes her, like he's obligated to serve her and make sure she's happy for the rest of his life.

I don't really agree that it's full of holes. I'm not sure what else isn't making sense?

Anyway, I think the ending in the book is much better. (Not really a spoiler since the movie does something totally different)
In the end, Serena tricks her husband and leaves George to die in the woods. Years later, Serena is interviewed for Life magazine because of her great success in the timber industry. She says she regrets nothing.
Shortly after, she is murdered by Jacob Harmon.

@goldendrifter19/">@@goldendrifter19 - I didn't really see those lines as a director's way of showing how much they loved each other. To me, it felt more like Serena trying to constantly pull validation out of him.
She seems emotionally unstable and insecure, like she’s totally dependent on him. She’s always hunting for signs of affection, needing him to tell her over and over that he loves her and that she's his everything. From what I could tell, he never actually says that famous "I love you" first.
I think they portrayed that pretty well, especially since she eventually snaps later on.

I caught it in the theater yesterday and I guess I can back up everything Violet said.
The movie isn't bad at all, actually.
But it's nothing special, I suppose.
It shifts from being a social drama into more of a romance.
Once you finish watching, you kind of wonder what the actual point was, because it touches on so many things... but it feels a bit rushed.
The cinematography is beautiful, though.
Jennifer Lawrence was great. Lately, I haven't been feeling her performances, but she was excellent here. That scene where she remembers her family burning down was particularly powerful.
Bradley Cooper was good too.
The transitions between scenes felt a little clunky, though.
And "the other woman" really got on my nerves.

Man, seriously... if we can't even talk about movies that are BASED ON BOOKS that came out years ago.
God, man. 🤦
Like someone actually spoiled that Voldemort dies or something.

silvergardener6 said:I suppose this film definitely shows some signs Part 1 regarding its narrative structure, but without a doubt, it’s the most serious, intimate, and politically intelligent entry in the franchise so far. There are a few clunky scenes and moments where the acting feels a bit forced, I guess, but there is so much goodness here that it more than justifies itself as a standalone movie. If you were expecting a fast-paced action spectacle, you might find yourself disappointed. However, if you prefer a story that prioritizes atmosphere, building tension, and an emotional weight that actually sticks with you, then it’s quite possible this could become your favorite The Hunger Games film. I was really hoping for this kind of second installment, and I think I got exactly what I wanted; it never felt slow to me for even a second. It reminds me a bit of how Harry Potter was handled—where many people found PT 1 to be a bit sluggish while PT 2 was packed with action, yet even today, I still find myself preferring PT 1.

It's more serious, I guess. But you really can't compare it to HP 7, Part 1.
That one was dark.
This one feels... kinda lukewarm and pretentious.
It lacks depth. And that depth is all in the book.
As a fan, I think they handled it pretty poorly.
They should have shown her as someone falling apart, but instead, she’s got perfect hair, perfect skin, and flawless clothes.
The dialogue feels shallow.
The whole thing with Effie's trauma—what the Capitol did to her after the games and how she and the others changed—was just tossed aside, making her feel like a caricature for Katniss to wear.
I don't know, I wish the acting was better. But Jennifer Lawrence is overacting. Seems like she's regressed.
There are just way too many flaws in this one.
Even the atmosphere isn't really there.
Nancy Kelly31 said:You were absolutely right—those 60 images... they don't stand out at all. As for the movie itself... well, let's just say it's nothing to write home about. It passes the time, I suppose. There are a few clever moments here and there, and everyone is just strikingly beautiful—especially the women and that tall, dark actor following her around... They are so impossibly attractive that it almost feels comical. Perfectly groomed and polished right in the middle of an apocalypse. Truly...
There are quite a lot of women in this film. They’ve essentially flipped the power dynamics on their head. In most movies, you see the ratio leaning heavily toward men, but here, the influence shifts through the female characters, and many of the men feel like they are merely filling out the background... That is perhaps the only truly engaging element of the entire narrative, this experimentation with gender roles...

Yeah, that really bugged me too.

Say what you want, but to me, Jennifer—who plays Katniss—is just broken. She's been starving since the games, she isn't eating anything because of the depression, and food supplies are super limited, maybe like 13 ounces per serving (if I recall the book correctly). She looks huge. ☕
I'm a huge fan of the books.

They really shouldn't have split the third part up.
The movie gets pretty exhausting at times and you just find yourself waiting for... SOMETHING. There's way too much pathetic behavior. I don't think Jennifer can really pull it off.
She's just not great at those crying or hysterical scenes.
Same goes for the action stuff (like when they say, "if we burn, you are burning with us.")
It was honestly kind of awkward to watch.
I think she's better in the parts where she doesn't talk and just moves through the scenes.

The film is slow, tedious, and honestly a bit of a drag. Even for a fan.

The kid playing Peet is great again here.

As for those newer Disney ones, I think one view is enough for me. I probably wouldn't go back to them. They're okay, I guess.
