What do you guys think of this? in Desktops ·
Honestly, I mean, if you ask me, everything else looks solid, except for that cooler—it’s just not going to fit your socket... you should probably hunt down something specifically made for an AM3+ setup instead...
Here’s what I’d go with:
The usual way you handle this is by heading straight over to the motherboard manufacturer’s website, double-checking that the board actually supports the specific processor you're trying to use, and then just downloading and flashing the latest BIOS update. If it still doesn't boot after all that work, I guess you're either looking at a dead chip, or maybe it's just the wrong socket entirely...

Hey there, I was wondering if you guys could maybe give me a quick breakdown and a quote for my PC build
Internet issues in IT Support ·
First off, you should probably head over to the Device Manager and just reinstall those network drivers from scratch... I mean, if there's actually an issue there, like the system isn't even seeing the network card at all, then yeah, it might be totally fried... but if that part goes okay, just shut down the PC and unplug the modem from the wall for like a full minute, then power everything back up... if that still doesn't do the trick, honestly, maybe just double-check that you didn't plug the ethernet cable into the wrong port on the modem in the first place...
My HyperX Cloud II is sounding weird in IT Support ·
Honestly, you could probably just fix it yourself if you wanted to... I guess you’d just need to feel around to find where the wire is actually snapped, then maybe trim it back with some wire cutters at that spot, join it up, and solder it. If you don't have a soldering iron lying around though, I suppose you could just patch it over with some electrical tape and call it a day...
Neither VGA nor DisplayPort is working :/ in IT Support ·
I honestly think your GPU might be totally dead. You should probably check if the fan is even spinning while the rig is powered on. Also, make sure the thing hasn't just popped out of its slot—it's possible someone bumped the case and knocked it loose, or maybe some kid just yanked it right out of the socket 😁... another thing is, if you're constantly messing around with all those cables, you might have damaged the DisplayPort connector, or it simply isn't seated quite right in the port

Intel-Dual Core E5500 2.80 GHz Matična-Foxconn 2 A8C
Intel g41 chipset
WD Blue 320GB 7200rpm, 8MB (WD3200AAJS)
HP 20" LCD monitor, 1600x900, 60Hz
Microsoft LifeCam Cinema webcam
The monitor and cam are basically brand new, and everything else is in great shape.

I'd probably say around $333 🤷

Can anyone give me a rough idea what this General Electric laptop is worth? I don't know the exact model name, but I've got the specs...

CPU—i5 3320m 2.60 Ghz
RAM—4GB
GPU—GeForce GT 640M 2GB (DirectX 11)
Hard drive—120 GB
THX sound
Display—FullHD 1920x1080 (60 Hz), looks like it's maybe a 16-inch screen
Built-in Wi-Fi
Windows 7 32

Ports—2x USB 3.0, HDMI, VGA, USB 2.0, eSATA...

Got the laptop as a gift, so it's basically brand new

I haven't been in the market for too long, but I'd probably say somewhere between $150 and $180. Anyone else got an opinion?

I was just sitting here wondering if I could actually get some cash for my old rig and parts to maybe upgrade to something newer without breaking the bank too much. Some of the stuff is a bit beat up, so I’m honestly not even sure if it’s worth selling individual pieces or if I should just dump the whole PC as parts—I guess I could use some advice there. Anyway, here is basically what I’ve got on hand right now:

Intel Core i5-750 3.2 ghz, LGA 1151, picked it up at Best Buy, I think it might still have like 2 years of warranty left
Intel NUC, LGA 1151 motherboard, grabbed it from Micro Center, probably has 2 years left on warranty
Cooler Master Hyper 212, bought at Best Buy, I think the warranty is either dead or almost gone
Crucial 4GB DDR3, bought from Newegg, looks like it’s got another year of warranty
Seagate Barracuda 500GB, NVMe, I can't find the receipt, but it should be under warranty for at least another year
EVGA GTX 450 2GB, bought at Best Buy, about 6 months of warranty left
Corsair VS500, no receipt and no warranty
EVGA 500 W1, bought at Best Buy, don't have the receipt, but I'm pretty sure the warranty is still valid
Fractal Design Define, bought on Amazon, warranty's expired, and the plastic around the FireWire port is busted, plus the dust filter on the front vent ripped out
Antec case, bought at Best Buy, it arrived broken from the shop and they wouldn't honor the warranty because it was "mechanical damage," so I had to glue it back together myself
Corsair AF120 120mm fans and Corsair AF140 140mm fans, bought at Best Buy, warranty is gone
Dell DVD Writer, it died on me, and I really don't feel like dealing with the hassle of a return, even though it's under warranty and from Best Buy
+
Logitech webcam C270 HD, bought at Best Buy, has the receipt and about a year of warranty left
Bose QuietComfort headphones, bought at Best Buy, comes with the receipt and warranty
Sony Trinitron 17", warranty's expired
IBM System/360 Samsung SyncMaster, black, flat screen, warranty's expired
Microsoft IntelliMouse, USB, warranty's expired
Razer DeathAdder, warranty's expired
Micro Center USB surge protector, 5 outlets, warranty's expired

So, yeah, that’s basically everything I’m lugging around. I’d honestly love to just get rid of all of it in one go. Maybe I’ll hang onto the 21" CRT and one of the power supplies so I don't have to buy new ones right away. What do you guys think I should do with all this junk?

That’s an interesting point... though, honestly, I’m not quite sure what kind of explanation would even work there—like, how exactly are the medications supposed to help ease things like psychosis in that scenario?

I mean, the meds just regulate the chemical balance in your brain, pretty much like it says right there.

I don't really know if this is the right spot for this kind of stuff, so I'll just scribble it down here, and if it's bothering anyone, I guess the admins can just delete it. Ever since I got sick, I've been trying to find some kind of way out of this mess I'm stuck in. Like, a way to escape my own skin. So, I started reading a lot. I stumbled upon some news stories that probably count as tabloid trash since modern science can't really explain them. One story was about this little boy who supposedly remembers his past life. He’s maybe six years old, but he apparently remembers exactly how he lived as a pilot during World War II, how he got shot down, and how he died. His parents actually took him to meet some of his former colleagues from back then, and the kid recognized all of them and called them by their names. Then they took him to see his sister from that previous life, and she said the boy even remembered specific photos that nobody else could have known about except them. Why am I bringing this up? Well, because reincarnation is a thing in some cultures, and I've also spent a lot of time watching the movie Matrix. So, I guess I've come to the conclusion that our "souls" eventually loop back into the system after a while. What does that have to do with schizophrenia? Everything, I think. It seems somewhat logical to me that all these souls are floating around us, and then they sort of force their way inside when we're at our most vulnerable. Like, a soul takes over a baby's body—or more specifically, its brain. All people with schizophrenia share the fact that there was a moment where they were incredibly vulnerable, and that's when the illness hit. My theory is that one or more of these souls crawled into us during that window of vulnerability. That would explain why some schizophrenics deal with "thought insertion." In my humble opinion, there are several different people—or voices, or souls—inside a schizophrenic's brain. And that's the mistake. My voices have asked me several times to just let them out. And honestly, I don't know any other way to do that besides dying. I'm taking meds to try and balance out my brain chemistry, but now it feels pretty obvious to me that the chemistry is messed up for a reason. There's more than one of us in here. We're all different. If I ever figure out a way to let them out, I believe I'll either be dead or finally cured.

Yeah, maybe I'll just stick to fixing computers at people's houses like I always have... though honestly, it feels like every kid out there knows how to do it now, so they aren't calling anyone for help like they used to...

driftingraven122 said:You might be able to qualify for $167-style social security benefits. That’s what I rely on. I suppose if your psychiatrist signs off on certain paperwork, you could also look into disability—though I don't personally receive that, so I couldn't tell you the exact amount.

I mean, I guess if you're talking about Dr. Harold Anderson3, he's alright, I suppose... just feels like he might be overcomplicating things sometimes, you know? Not that I'm an expert or anything, but I don't know, maybe his approach is just a bit much for what we actually need right now. Just my two cents, though. kaže:
I guess I'm taking this one on. $200 I mean, I’m getting social security and all that, but honestly, it’s not even just because of my health issues—there's a bunch of other stuff going on too. My grandma is pulling about $2,500 a month from her benefits, so I guess it's just how things work. It's all based on the disability status and everything. $417I mean, look, if you’ve actually put in enough years at your job to qualify, I guess it might be smarter to just go after disability benefits instead.

I mean, I’ve probably got maybe six years of seniority under my belt, which honestly doesn't feel like enough to even think about qualifying for retirement or anything like that. And then there's that whole thing about those 500 bucks...$200 I mean, I wouldn't even give a scrap to a pig, let alone some young guy. It’s honestly just shameful.

Taylor Campbell4 said:I’m certainly no expert here—far from it—but if you've seen five different psychiatrists only to have them shuffle your meds around without much luck, maybe it's worth seeking out a sixth opinion just to see if things can improve. You mentioned earlier that you were avoiding the doctor because you were worried about losing your job, but since you're already out of work now... 🙂

I’m actually planning on heading in there in the next few days, specifically because of all this. It just feels kind of pathetic, though, you know? Like, Risperdal doesn't make you gain weight or turn into a total zombie like these other drugs do. And honestly, I have no clue what they're even going to prescribe me for the histrionics and these panic attacks. I’ll probably end up popping a handful of pills every single day. I really don't want to be a burden on my parents, so I need to look into getting disability benefits, and $167 having that monthly check coming in would mean everything to me—if they even pay out enough to cover the basics. I worked my ass off while I was younger, doing everything I could. Now, I guess I'm just looking at spending the rest of my life being a complete loser.

Taylor Campbell4 said:Even if you do have that, it’s likely some low-tier assistance—the kind that keeps you from being able to hold down a real job while you're receiving it. Honestly, I'd suggest focusing on getting yourself squared away first and then jumping back into the job hunt.

I mean, I'm not really sure I could actually pull off any decent work when I'm dealing with these random hallucinations, panic attacks, and all that other stuff. As far as what I'm actually trained and educated for goes, I can't do anything at all, and trying to head back to school for retraining is its own whole mess—partly because of the panic, partly because my concentration is shot, and then there's the money side of things, too. Plus, let's be real, nobody wants to hire an old crazy guy, even if I did have the credentials. There's a massive pool of young people out there looking for work who are just way better than me in every single way.

Hey everyone. So, I’ve been diagnosed with schizophrenia, specifically F20, and they put me on 6mg of Risperdal daily. I actually end up taking 8mg, mostly just because I have enough to make it last a full month, and the fine print on the box says you get the best results somewhere between 6 and 8mg. I haven't actually seen my psychiatrist in a few years, even though I’m supposed to check in every six months or so. To be honest, I live in a tiny town where everybody knows everybody's business, and I was terrified that if word got out, I'd lose my job. I'm pretty consistent with my meds, though, and I know deep down that my mental state—and honestly, nobody else on this planet—can fix things for me. But, using my own analytical brain, I've realized I act pretty weird, especially here on this forum, so I did some digging into what that might mean. Turns out, it looks like I might have histrionic personality disorder too. And man, it doesn't stop there; I notice I act strange in certain situations, like when I have to go to the dentist or catch a movie. I get hit with this intense nervousness, like I just downed ten espressos at once, and I feel like I have to run away from the stress. This whole habit of avoiding stress has basically turned me into a hermit; I hardly go anywhere anymore, thinking maybe if I just rest, my brain will somehow reset itself. Instead, it's just led to me becoming totally antisocial and ending up with terrible teeth. So, first off, I really need a diagnosis for this specific issue, and secondly, any advice on which meds are worth taking and which ones I should stay far away from? My psychiatrist is always swamped, and honestly, she feels more like an incompetent little drug dealer than anything else since she doesn't really provide any actual help beyond just handing out prescriptions. Also, given how things are right now—since I'm currently unemployed and let's face it, nobody wants to hire someone struggling with mental health (not that anyone can find work these days anyway, as we all know)—I was wondering if I'm eligible for any kind of government assistance, like disability or something similar. Is that even how mental illnesses are classified in the US? Anyway, that's the deal. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Look, I mean, Brian Edwards6 isn't exactly the only one acting like this. Even Velia told me straight to my face that I was lying, then went ahead and nuked my post. Later on, I actually had to sit there in our private messages trying to defend myself and explain that I wasn't making stuff up just because she wouldn't take my word for it. Honestly, it doesn't even surprise me. At the end of the day, the admins and mods are just regular people, which means they mess up and let their own biases get in the way. Every time I try to lighten the mood or throw a little joke around to keep things from getting too heavy, my posts get wiped and flagged as trolling—even if the person I was joking with totally got the vibe and didn't take it as an insult. You really can't expect any objectivity around here, it's just not happening. And speaking of being one-sided, if I can pivot for a second to talk about Michelle Alvarez8, I swear I haven't heard her say one single nice or positive thing about anyone since the day I joined this forum.
