Windows won't boot after backup in IT Support ·
silvertiger19 said:Hi everyone! I could really use some urgent help here 🙂
So, here is the situation: I decided to run a backup using Clonezilla because I was planning to install Ubuntu alongside my existing setup. The backup itself seemed to complete without any issues, but now I’ve hit a major snag—I can't boot into Windows at all. I keep getting an error message saying the repair failed, and no matter what I try—whether it's a system reset or other troubleshooting steps—nothing seems to work. Does anyone know how I can get back into Windows? Should I be looking into drivers? If so, where would those be located, and which specific ones should I be selecting? This was my first time diving into something like this, and now I feel completely stuck. For context, I am running Windows 8.

Thanks so much! 🕺

Maybe you could try popping in an installation DVD or a USB stick and starting a fresh Windows installation, but instead of clicking install, just click repair on the left... though, I guess Microsoft designed the last few OS versions to be pretty much standalone on the disc, so maybe you can't run Ubuntu alongside it... at least that's my guess...

As far as I can tell, it isn't working; this is what it looks like on my optical drive.

I've got the boot from DVD set up—meaning the ATAPI CD-ROM is sitting right at the top of the priority list—and I've already disabled Secure Boot, so I'm kind of stumped on what else could be causing this mess.

Do you even have a physical CD or DVD drive?
No audio output in IT Support ·
So, Windows 10 is being a total pain in the ass with my audio settings lately. It just went ahead and auto-installed some new drivers through Windows Update without even asking, and now it’s acting like these non-existent headphones are my default playback device instead of my actual speakers... I guess it's just one of those things. Anyway, if you're dealing with the same nonsense, the workaround seems to be right-clicking the sound icon in the taskbar, running the troubleshooter, selecting your actual speakers, and then clicking "apply this fix" to get everything back to normal.
Windows 7 installation in IT Support ·
So, you should probably head into your BIOS and hunt down the boot settings. You'll want to move your DVD drive or whatever USB stick you're using for the Windows 7 installation to the top of the priority list... though, honestly, maybe you won't even need to mess with the BIOS at all if you just tap F11 or F12 right when you start things up to pick your boot device manually...

So I was reading this line: "Bill Gates makes so much money that it wouldn't even be worth his time to bend over and pick up a thousand bucks if it fell out of his pocket," and then the mod just nuked it because apparently it was "cluttering up the chat"...

But this forum isn't your own private living room, so there’s an expectation that you actually stick to the rules—rules you, by the way, agreed to the second you hit that registration button. Personally, I don't see any issue here.

Yeah, alright, I guess I agree with you there. Even if the forum is a public space, people still need to respect the rules. But then how am I supposed to make sense of the fact that the moderator deleted my photo and some completely neutral sentences—nothing vulgar at all—just a week ago, and then basically made up some random rules on the spot just to justify why they wiped them?

Joshua Jones13 said:So, after such a lovely explanation, I suppose I can just add that this chat isn't some unmoderated free-for-all. It's actually the moderators' job to keep things orderly and civil, which is exactly what Eowyn did.
If you aren't a fan of having your posts removed, maybe don't write stuff that deserves deletion and, unfortunately, drives everyone else away from the chat.

Look, could you please actually go back and check what was in those deleted posts? Maybe ask someone like blue-sapphire if they were cracking up or just totally repulsed by them... I mean, what am I supposed to do, walk on eggshells with everything I type? Constantly overthinking every single sentence ten times before hitting send just to sound "neutral"? Honestly, it sounds exhausting, and I don't know how you guys do it...

The only way this makes any sense to me is if everyone in this group absolutely loathes each other and is constantly using double entendres to insult one another at 3 pm...

I mean, some people actually find that kind of vibe pretty charming. To me, it just shows I’m down to earth and not trying to put on some fake, polished persona. I’m the type of person who might just let out a "holy shit" or a "screw this" when things go sideways... and it honestly bugs me when someone acts all shocked and goes, "Oh my, how unrefined." At least with me, you know exactly where you stand. I don't sugarcoat my words just to politely tell someone to get lost, you know? Like, if you accidentally smash your thumb with a hammer, I'd actually want to hear what you say in that moment, just so we can see which one of us is being the bigger hypocrite...

neonfox12 said:electricharbor30, I’m not saying you overstepped once; I’m saying you’ve been overstepping for quite some time now. If I were running the show here as a moderator, you would have been banned ages ago.

And look, it isn't personal—I don't have anything against you specifically. It’s just your way of expressing yourself. I actually advocated for Eowyn to take on a moderator role for this forum because I truly believed she was the one who could "fix" the culture here. And honestly? I think she has. If every moderator had her level of integrity and skill, someone as insignificant as me wouldn't have even found a place on this board.

Maybe try thinking through the nonsense you post before hitting send, and then perhaps your posts won't keep getting deleted. 🙂

p.s. Just for the record: I'm saying all this even though I personally voted for the very rules currently being enforced on this forum—rules that she helped draft herself.

Well, that’s probably why you aren't a mod, I guess. People aren't just cattle that you can shove into a pen and treat however you want. You aren't like me, I’m not like you, and nobody else is exactly like anyone else either. It’s a diverse world, you know? I’m not looking for any kind of special treatment or anything, I just don't want to be bullied and I want my freedom to express myself. Honestly, it kind of hurts that my way of talking bothers you so much. There’s plenty of stuff that bugs me too, but I don't go around policing people just because they are who they are. I mean, if that were the rule, nobody could have tattoos, or red hair, or wear Vans. I don't complain when people use weird regional slang, for example. I haven't insulted anyone, I haven't harassed anyone, and I haven't said or done anything remotely nasty to anyone, yet my posts still get deleted. This seriously needs to stop. I should at least have the right to speak the same way I do in real life, right?

So, I’m officially calling for her to be removed. This is the second time today she’s gone ahead and nuked my posts in just the last week—and we’re talking posts longer than thirty words here. I mean, I don't spend half an hour crafting a response just to have someone delete it in a split second, you know? She claims I'm "sabotaging" the chat, but if you ask me, I’m just making the place feel alive, more colorful, and actually funny. Okay, fine, maybe I get a little vulgar sometimes, but apparently, some people can't handle that while others think it's totally fine. Like, she was deleting stuff from me and Cikcak, yet whenever her little pet Velociraptor says anything at all, she’s all over it with the laughs. Then she has the nerve to publicly claim she’s just dealing with some CIA issues, probably thinking that justifies her hypocrisy and the way she picks favorites. It’s like, she hates that we’ve turned this chat into a total dive bar atmosphere, but she doesn't even enforce those same rules on the other subreddits where she’s a mod. Honestly, she’d rather just shove me in a drawer and slap me every time I try to peek out. And look, I’ve never been a fan of uniforms, and I definitely can't stand being tucked away in a box. I guess I’m just way too creative for that kind of thing. So yeah, please, just replace her with someone who actually has a sense of balance.

Thanks!

I mean, did you maybe mess around in Disk Management at all? Like, were you playing with spanned or stripped volumes? Or basically setting up some kind of Windows RAID array? For stuff like that to even work, the drive has to be set to dynamic. I have no clue what exactly you were tweaking, so I can't give you a straight answer, but yeah... converting it to a dynamic disk won't wipe your data or anything, but you won't be able to install Windows on a dynamic disk either. Honestly, if you don't actually need a RAID setup, your best bet might just be to switch everything back to basic disks.

Those aren't even the same graphics chips, and the processors aren't even in the same league. That's like saying a go-kart is better than a Formula 1 car just because it's newer and more fuel-efficient.

I've personally owned a Core i3 530 and a Core i7 760, and now I'm running a G1610... honestly, I don't see much of a difference when I'm gaming. Most of these newer chips either stutter like crazy or they can only push frames if you crank everything down to the absolute minimum settings. If someone actually needs decent graphics, they should just buy a real GPU. Spending an extra $1,000 or $500 more on a CPU just to get slightly better integrated graphics is totally insane... especially when you're only saving a tiny bit of cash. If this guy manages to squeeze out even 5 extra FPS for that little extra money by choosing the Pentium, you can cut me anywhere you want... but he's only got $667 to work with, so clearly he's trying to be careful with his budget...

Who actually paid for a review? Honestly, I’ve been buying both Intel and AMD processors pretty much equally for years now, so I know what I’m talking about... there really isn't any noticeable speed difference between an i3 530 and the graphics I'm running right now in my G1610... that's just how the corporate world works, I guess. They push things forward in tiny little increments because they want to milk the users as much as possible. Every new generation is usually just about 10 to 25 percent faster than the last one, mostly because that’s the sweet spot for squeezing us for more cash. If they actually gave us a processor that was 100% faster, they wouldn't be able to justify releasing a newer model for years, which is just bad business. But then again, handing people a worse machine just because it's a newer generation is also bad business... and nobody is going to put up with that. If I had decided to pay $333 for a CPU, then yeah, maybe I would've gotten a processor that fast... but since I'm running lower on cash lately, I just stuck with the cheaper version and stayed at the same level. This N3150 is probably roughly in the same ballpark as a Q6600, or maybe even a generation older... but honestly, it's not even that bad when you consider everything else

Core Config, Execution Units—is there really no boost to GPU efficiency? 🙂

EDIT: Also, yeah, there are tons of reviews out there. Apparently, the integrated graphics on the G3250 are just a tiny bit better than an HD 4000 (like on an i3 3225, for example).

I mean, honestly, shrinking the die just basically cancels out any potential gains... if there were actually a meaningful difference in speed, they wouldn't be slapping the "Intel HD Graphics" label on it; they’d call it something like 4300, 4600, or Iris or whatever. Even if there was some tiny little improvement tucked away in there, it would probably just end up benefiting the Braswell chips anyway. Usually, these processors are only sold as being maybe 10% faster than the previous generation, so I guess it's all pretty much the same thing in the end.

crimsonstag84 said:Everything you just said sounds like you're buying a computer for yourself... like, 'this would be better for me because I have these requirements, and they probably have them too.' 😬

CPU power? You need enough so it isn't just a slideshow when a 50 vs. 50 soldier battle kicks off in AoE ii / III, or even worse in some slightly newer strategy game (since they all rely on a single core). Honestly, the Broadwell architecture barely offers any real upgrade over Haswell.

Will games run smoothly? The integrated graphics on the N3150 are twice as weak.

Upgrading to an SSD is the easiest move, along with adding more DDR3 RAM—an SSD will make the whole system fly.

All this talk about fans, heat, and thermal throttling seems pretty silly for Pentium or Celeron chips, and the power savings are negligible at best.

Maybe the only real perk is less dust buildup.

I get the feeling you're just pulling these stats from somewhere, though I guess it wouldn't be polite of me to guess where...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...nth_generation

The Intel HD Graphics is just the most basic thing ever; whether it's in a Pentium, a Celeron, or this unit, it’s the same deal across Ivy Bridge, Haswell, and Broadwell generations... the manufacturing process gets smaller with every new generation, and stuff that used to be sold as an i3 or even an i5 is now squeezed into these lower-end chips... on my old i3 530, the graphics were basically identical to what this has now... it's just smaller nowadays, but the speed is pretty much the same...

crimsonstag84 said:I'm thinking about pairing an HDD with a Celeron G1820 myself, which makes it $33 probably cheaper than your Braswell setup, and honestly, it should still feel a lot faster.

Everything stays within budget anyway. It doesn't run hot, and having more cores isn't really a big deal here since those four weaker ones are actually slower than the two Pentium cores, even in multithreaded tasks. Plus, those old games you're looking to play usually don't even touch more than one or two cores, so the Pentium has a bit of an edge there. The integrated graphics are a little weaker, and the power supply is just a lower-tier version of what's in my rig.

Then again, you could always upgrade to a used i5 in a few years.

But what's the point? I mean, sure, the higher clock speed on the Pentium is an advantage, but what exactly is all that processing power for? Is he trying to flex on his neighbors about having a Pentium, an i5, or an i7? It's totally unnecessary. This thing will run everything just the same, and he gets a ton of perks and savings out of it. My guess is he wants to load up a bunch of games, which is why I went with an HDD... back in my day when I was playing those kinds of games, I was always running out of space since I had over 30 games installed at once. Now, I just have one single game and an SSD suits me way better. If this guy is planning on installing Windows 10, Office, games, and whatever else, that 120GB is going to feel pretty small... this CPU with dual channel memory handles 4K video with the integrated graphics just fine, and games will fly on it too, especially since the architecture is newer and they fixed most of the teething issues from previous versions—though I'm sure this one probably has its own bugs too... man, I'd honestly grab this computer for myself; I'd even swap out my gigahertz-heavy G1610 processor and its motherboard for this... it sucks when after a while you have to start greasing the valves because they start squeaking and you have to shut down the PC just to blow out the dust, constantly worrying it's gonna die or that the clock speeds will drop during the summer...
