How to get a therapist covered by insurance? in Psychology & Therapy ·
neonsailor26 said:Well, technically, yes, you can 🙂.

I’ve actually already gone through seven sessions with my own psychologist 🙂.

You just head over to your primary care physician—and honestly, it doesn't even have to be your regular doctor—and ask them for a referral to a psychologist. Simple as that!

Edit:

Oops, I just realized what you're actually asking...

I don't think that's going to work.

You're looking for a way to use an insurance referral to see a private practitioner without having to foot the bill yourself, right?

From what I understand, that isn't really how the system works here in the States.

Anything strictly private usually requires payment—though, in my experience, "private" doesn't always mean "better"...

Yeah, a referral so I don't have to pay out of pocket.
I heard there's some way to pull that off.

Just like the title says:
is there any way to get a referral from a doctor so I don't have to shell out cash at a private clinic?

The value is right there in the bottom right corner.

So if that's the case, why does the FDA still insist on putting those RDA numbers—the Reference Daily Intake—right there on every single food label?
Based on their own math, it looks like they’re suggesting we should be aiming for somewhere around 90 grams of sugar a day.

Did you pick that up from an actual doctor or some medical specialist, or was it just something you stumbled upon online?
The internet is basically a minefield of misinformation these days. I really need to make sure what I'm reading is actually legit; I'm trying to stay ahead of things and protect myself from all those health issues that come with eating way too much sugar.👍

What’s the actual recommended daily limit for sugar intake if you don't want to wreck your health?
The internet is just a massive, confusing mess of conflicting advice. One site tells you to stay under 25 grams, then the next one says 200 grams is fine. It’s all over the place.

I get that there’s a difference between men and women when it comes to metabolic stuff. What I really want to know is how much sugar a guy can realistically consume daily without basically inviting Type 2 diabetes to move in.

I have a bit of a sweet tooth—not gonna lie—and I usually polish off a 100-gram bar of Hershey's pretty much every day. A bar like that can pack about 50 grams of sugar. Is that pushing it too far?

Thanks for all the input.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a private surgeon out near the Midwest or maybe in Washington, D.C.?

Robin Diaz4 said:My dad went through something almost identical when he broke his femur. They put all these screws in his knee, and it ended up being so messed up he couldn't even straighten his leg. The surgeon insisted everything was fine, so we drove to another city to get a second opinion. Still nothing—they couldn't find an actual error, just some scar tissue buildup that eventually had to be cleared out via arthroscopy. Finally, we went to a private specialist who was absolutely horrified; apparently, the screws were way too long and were physically blocking the joint from moving properly. He paid for a third surgery, and somehow, he was back home walking in two days. Everything worked after that. But by then, the muscle atrophy had already set in, so he dealt with slight walking issues for the rest of his life—nothing huge, just enough to notice if you were looking.
P.S. This was ages ago, so my memory of the medical jargon is pretty fuzzy.
P.S. Looking at the X-ray, even I could tell as a layperson that those screws were too long. I have no idea how the surgeon missed that.

Thanks.
Which city did you go to for that private specialist, and what does a consultation like that run you?

What I really care about is whether the bone is actually sitting where it belongs. It just feels... off. Like it's not in its natural position, and I can't even fully straighten my knee.
Is it worth getting a second or third opinion from another surgeon or maybe a physical therapist?

So, I was in a pretty bad car accident recently—ended up with multiple fractures—and honestly, I’m not feeling great about how the surgery turned out, even though my surgeon insists everything went exactly according to plan.
Specifically, it's my lower leg that’s bothering me; I can't seem to get my knee to straighten all the way, but when I bring it up, the doctor just flat-out denies there was any mistake made during the procedure.

I'm trying to figure out what my next move should be here. I'm genuinely worried that if I can't get my leg straight, it's going to mess up my gait permanently, and I don't want to be dealing with walking issues for the rest of my life.

Thanks!
I honestly wouldn't want my kids to grow up in a world this brutal. Truth be told, I probably won't even have them.
Everyone is just chasing a paycheck these days. Genuine friendships? Gone. Food is basically junk, technology has us all on a leash, and people think having a $1,000 iPhone makes them someone $0.00... Not to mention how easy it is to end up broke if you're stuck living in a decaying American city like Detroit or Cleveland.

Anyway... looking back at the last 50 years, the only thing that’s actually "advanced" is tech, which really just means we've become slaves to the same old patterns. Honestly, what's even left that's intelligent about the internet?? And when it comes to actual quality of life... it's plummeted. It's just creating this massive wave of resentment. People aren't happy, and that's the bottom line—that should be the real metric for human progress.

Does anyone actually know why this thing won't go through?
Schizophrenia - General Discussion in Psychology & Therapy ·
It’s been about six months since I was hospitalized and slapped with a schizophrenia diagnosis. Since then, I actually went out and sought a second opinion. Ended up getting a different diagnosis: F23, acute and transient mental disorders. My new psychiatrist over at JPMorgan Chase swapped out my old meds for something else entirely. All I can say is that my focus and memory are just... shot. There’s this constant mental fog hanging over everything. I’ve lost all interest in studying or even picking up a book. Now, I'm trying to track down some medication to help with concentration, but man, it’s proving to be a real headache to actually get my hands on. The intrusive thoughts? Gone. But I'm not the same person I used to be. Everything feels much louder now—I'm way more sensitive to any kind of negative input from the outside world.

silentpilot97 said:I also live with an F20 diagnosis. When I first got it, I actually sat down with this veteran psychiatrist—she had something like 40 years under her belt—and asked her straight up how I could recover from this. Her advice was simple: read for four hours a day and take a walk around Central Park once a day; she said it would help stabilize me. I didn't follow her advice at first because I just didn't have the patience for reading anymore, but once my medication stabilized and the side effects leveled off, I realized that reading really does help ground my thoughts.
If the medication isn't working for you, you have to speak up and tell your doctor.
I'd honestly suggest seeking out a second opinion, or even a third, if you truly feel like this diagnosis doesn't fit who you are...

Thanks for getting back to me. The thing is, I can't even focus on reading right now—I just feel dull and foggy. These symptoms started cropping up after I was discharged from the hospital. It's not an every-day occurrence, but when it happens, it makes functioning pretty much impossible. Honestly, I don't see the connection to schizophrenia. I don't even know what else to link it to. All I know is that something deep down feels fundamentally wrong. 😕

What else could it be?
Schizophrenia - General Discussion in Psychology & Therapy ·
My story:
Between the intrusive thoughts and my inability to focus on anything, I finally decided to go see a psychiatrist. Based just on those two things, he slapped an F20 diagnosis on me.
I spent about three weeks checked into a hospital where they basically kept me medicated around the clock. Now I’ve been discharged and sent home with a prescription for Risperdal.

The intrusive thoughts have cleared up, sure, but now I’m dealing with these episodes where my brain just... stops working properly. I get this restless urge to just keep walking and walking. I can't even sit down with one of those books I used to love. Then there's the anxiety—this constant, heavy dread about what's coming next. I’ve lost all interest in hanging out with people, too. Honestly, I'm terrified I won't be able to finish my degree at MIT.

Has anyone else gone through something like this? Any advice on how to get my life back on track? 😕
