Sniff all you want, but I have to disagree with you on this one.
rowdybadger18 said:What you're saying isn't quite right. Every version of Office, starting from the 2010 release, asks you which file format you want to use as the default—either Office Open XML or OpenDocument—the very first time you launch an app from the suite. It looks like this, and I'm sure you've seen it before. Regardless of what you pick, Microsoft Office 2010 and newer have native support for OpenDocument (for both saving and opening), and even Office 2007 handles it pretty well. So, there's really no argument here—those using Microsoft Office can be just as compliant with standards as anyone else using OpenDocument...
I've installed Microsoft Office 2010 through 2013 more times than I can count, and I've never run into that. Even if that prompt pops up, I honestly wonder how many people actually bother to read it...
The point isn't whether Office has the capability—I already said it does. My point was that it doesn't save in that format by default, so it doesn't really solve your problem...
Sure, ODF is an official standard, but since Microsoft defaults to saving everything as .docx, there isn't much chance they'll change that. Besides, I doubt 99% of users would even care enough to bother with it...
Just leave it be. Honestly, you don't really seem to have a handle on this, and you're risking total system instability just to save a measly 2 MB of RAM.
