Windows 7 OEM version for small business in Software ·
Look, Windows 7 has been out of the picture for ages—anything you see sitting on a shelf in a store right now is just old stock gathering dust. Your only real option back then would have been picking up an 8 retail version.

An OEM license isn't "legal" in any meaningful sense unless it’s tied directly to the specific machine it was purchased with—and let's be real, you actually need the paper trail from the company to prove it. You can't just grab some random "old" computer from a storage closet and pretend everything is fine; you're asking for a massive fine if you play it that way. Seriously, don't mess around with this. Your best bet is to try swapping it at the store for an 8 retail license.

When the inspectors show up and start poking around your hardware, they aren't just looking at the box—they're going to demand the invoices and licenses for the computer itself, plus every single piece of software their scanners pick up on the system.

Maybe take a second to scroll through the subforum—there’s already been a thread about this exact headache. I remember reading about a guy who bought an HP machine with Windows pre-installed, but since the invoice didn't explicitly list the OS, he got absolutely wrecked until he managed to get a confirmation letter from HP. He basically got lucky because that specific model wasn't even sold without Windows in the first place.

It’s pretty easy to fix if he’s as old as a vintage vinyl record—his eyesight has definitely seen better days. 😁

Just wait until the installer actually asks you to pop the floppy in—don't go ahead and shove it in early.
Hard drive issues in IT Support ·
Just wondering—at what exact moment did you pop that floppy into the drive? I'm trying to figure out if this error pops up when you first launch the Windows setup while the disk is already sitting in the floppy drive.

Are you using a USB keyboard? You should probably check if your Legacy USB support is set to Enabled—it’s under the USB Configuration section on the Advanced tab. It ought to respond when you hit F6; just don't go shoving the floppy drive into the PC right away—wait until the system actually asks for it. Did you pack the driver onto the floppy using that Makedisk utility?

It looks like your OnChip sat settings in the BIOS are totally messed up (check that Main tab)—you should probably switch the RAID mode over to IDE or whatever other options you've got sitting there.
Blue Screen of Death and constant app crashes in IT Support ·
Grab this tool and run a log of those Blue Screens of Death, then dump the results right here: http://www.resplendence.com/whocrashed

What kind of laptop are we dealing with here?
Zoom issues in Software ·
Sandra White10 said:I just tried watching the same series using MPC-HC, BS Player, Windows Media Player, and Zoom—and wouldn't you know it—only Zoom is out of sync. Everything else works perfectly fine in full screen.
So, it’s clearly not a Windows issue—it's just a straight-up Zoom player problem.

Man, just try uninstalling it and grabbing a newer version of Zoom.
Best USB drives to buy right now? Recommendations wanted! in Computer Peripherals ·
They’re claiming 40/10 MB/s for read/write—honestly, I’m a little skeptical about those speeds, though it feels more grounded in reality than some of the other junk out there. Plus, you actually get a decent warranty on this one:

Have you tried throwing a different player at this—just to see if the issue follows you there too? Does this happen with pretty much every video you try to run? I mean, regardless of the format, like avi, wmv, mp4, or mkv?

Also, you might as well just kill that screensaver entirely—it’s not like it’s actually doing anything useful for you anyway. 🙂
Best gaming monitor recommendations? in Computer Peripherals ·
The T200 is a solid, snappy little monitor—honestly, I wouldn't bother swapping it out unless you're absolutely dying for more screen real estate or a higher resolution.
Can't open any Word docs on my D: drive in IT Support ·
Yep, Ransomware.

Carol Harris9, you really stepped in it this time. 🙂 It’s pretty much a binary choice at this point—either you pay whatever ridiculous amount they're demanding (you might want to take a look at what those decryption docs actually say) or you just say goodbye to all your files.
How do I recover my data? in IT Support ·
1. Your data isn't actually gone—you just need to run a repair on your current Windows installation; a fresh install is honestly a waste of time here. Have you even tried booting into Safe Mode yet?
2. If you end up being forced to reinstall Windows, don't DIY it—just call the company whose software you're running and have them handle the reinstallation for you.
3. Where exactly is the backup for those critical accounting programs?

It’s fine—honestly, we’re just looking at two different ways of reading the exact same set of data.

You’ve got a similar model here: http://www.newegg.com/p/motherboard-example

Do me a favor and dig into the BIOS—check the clock speeds, the latency, and the voltage on that RAM—just to make sure everything actually matches what's printed on the module stickers.
RAM Upgrades in IT Support ·
There’s nothing you actually need to toggle—dual channel kicks in automatically the second you snap two modules into the board. I don't know what the deal is, but it looks like one of your slots is just dead.
RAM Upgrades in IT Support ·
So, for some reason, the second RAM slot on this board is totally dead. I mean, it might not have anything to do with the cleaning process—could be anything—but I’m honestly worried you might have fried the whole motherboard. Did you mess around with the Northbridge at all (you know, that chip sitting under the tall blue heatsink right between the CPU socket and the PCI slot)? Also, did you end up pulling or disconnecting anything else while you were cleaning, besides just the fan?
RAM Upgrades in IT Support ·
Are we talking about identical modules here? Did you pick up some kind of bundle or what? It was working fine before, and now—suddenly—it’s just dead? Give me some actual details to work with. Since you're running into BIOS issues, we're looking at a failure somewhere in the chain—either the RAM itself is acting up or there's a problem with the motherboard.

Does everything run smoothly when you've only got 4 GB installed? And have you actually cycled through all four possible slot combinations yet?
Is Windows 7 backup and Restore any good? in Software ·
restlessdrifter12 said:Oh man, I just ran the "create a system image" thing and about ten minutes later—boom—there’s this "WindowsImageBackup" folder sitting there taking up 7.6 GB. Now I'm sitting here wondering how the hell I actually run a restore when the time comes.

Well, you're gonna need to make a System Repair Disc first—then you just boot from that whenever you're ready to pull off the actual restore.
Password cracker in Software ·
That kind of software can be pretty useful—assuming you’ve been logging into your gmail account on that machine and your password is still sitting there tucked away in the browser history. It basically scans through all those saved credentials stored within Windows. But, if you've already gone ahead and wiped your history—say, using CCleaner—then you're out of luck with the local tools and really need to deal with Google support directly.
