Event Viewer warning in IT Support ·
Maybe try heading into your network adapter properties and just uncheck TCP/IPv6—keep IPv4 as the only thing running there. Also, it’s entirely possible your card's driver is just being finicky and doesn't actually support task offload, which would explain why you're seeing that warning. If you want to test that theory, just fire up the command prompt, type this in, and hit enter: netsh int ip set global taskoffload=disabled

redbison18 said:I need some solid recommendations for a 1TB hard drive—something for both my desktop and my laptop—specifically to handle torrenting, because the ones I’m using right now are absolutely trash.

What’s the logic there? If the computer is actually powered down—and I mean fully shut off, not just sleeping—then nothing is downloading. Period. It's just basic physics at that point.

swiftmoose20 said:Heh, I'm good, thanks for the answer. So, if that's the case, I can just grab an Ada and call it a day without worrying about it—unless you’ve got some other totally different suggestion up your sleeve?

I don't have much else to add to the conversation—honestly, when it comes to peripherals, my whole strategy basically boils down to one thing: I'm always hunting for the longest warranty possible. It’s just common sense, really—why bother with gear that’s going to die on you in six months when you can grab something with a solid three-year coverage? It's all about minimizing the headache later on.

stormyharbor73 said:Look, I’m no tech guru—definitely not an expert by any stretch—but I’m hunting for a 2TB external hard drive. Just something portable enough to toss in my bag when I'm traveling or whatever, nothing too crazy, just something that works.
Can anyone point me toward some solid options that are actually worth looking at on the market right now? I'm talking about what's currently performing well here in the States—nothing too outdated, just the stuff that actually holds water today.

So, look—you can actually find this one here in the States, and it’s got the 1TB version: I was just scrolling through some online shops—you know how it goes, falling down those endless rabbit holes at 2 AM—and I stumbled upon this specific item. It’s one of those things that looks perfectly fine in the photos, almost too perfect, if that makes sense. You see these products listed with all the bells and whistles, looking like they belong in a high-end showroom in Manhattan or maybe a boutique in Chicago, but then you actually look at the specs. It’s interesting—really—how much effort goes into the presentation versus the actual utility of the thing. We live in an era where everything is polished to a mirror shine before we even get a chance to touch it. It’s a bit cynical, honestly, but that’s just how the market works these days. You find something that catches your eye, you think "hey, that might actually solve my problem," and then you realize you're mostly just paying for the aesthetic. Anyway, just a random thought while I was browsing. Nothing major, just one of those little observations that sticks in your head for no particular reason.
Honestly, I’m leaning toward the 2TB model—it just makes sense. http://www.saturn.nl/mcs/product/WES...tml?langId=-11

I was scrolling through some procurement sites today—you know, those endless rabbit holes of government contracts and supply orders—and I stumbled onto a search for "MY passport 2TB." Now, if you aren't tech-savvy enough to realize that's an oxymoron, let me break it down for you—it’s like looking for a "high-speed" turtle or a "diet" double cheeseburger. A passport is a tiny little booklet used for identity and travel, not a massive external hard drive meant to store your entire digital life. Unless someone is trying to smuggle a literal library of data inside a government document—which, honestly, sounds like the plot of a mediocre B-movie you'd see on cable at 2 AM—the search term is just nonsensical. It’s one of those moments where you realize the internet is basically just people typing things they don't understand into search bars and hoping for a miracle. Just a weird, digital glitch in the matrix, really.

When you're looking at USB sticks, memory speeds can be all over the place—honestly, you can usually tell what you're getting just by looking at the price tag. You aren't going to snag a high-speed drive for pennies. Now, if we're talking hard drives, they're mechanical, running at 5400 rpm and doing their thing, but there isn't much of a massive difference between them. If I had to pick, I’d probably go with a SanDisk—it's got a pretty robust, shock-resistant casing, though I wouldn't exactly go throwing it against a wall for fun. 😁
Noctua vs Fractal vs Corsair in Desktops ·
The AF120 QE is quieter, sure—but honestly, their airflow is pretty garbage, especially if you’re mounting them behind a dust filter. Noctua is a bit louder, and while they definitely pack more punch performance-wise, man, they are pricey. If I'm being real about it, I'd probably just go with the Scythe GlideStream. 😁
Monitor display issues in Desktops ·
This usually happens when you're dealing with voltage issues—either a faulty cable or some drama with the power supply inside the monitor itself. Just try plugging in a different monitor to see if it behaves.

Talk about a weak attempt at an excuse. 🤣 I mean, what are the odds—some random single-core Sempron is hiding under that cooler?

Tyler Wood5, just pull that heatsink off and see what else got trashed besides the motherboard. For all we know, there isn't even a processor under there. 😁

At least it wasn't the box for some high-end premium board.

Scott Edwards62 said:Since there isn't a specific "valuation" thread under the laptop section, what do you guys think this 17.3" machine is worth? It's about 2 years old.
From what I've seen, you can find much worse 17" laptops today for $1000 that only have integrated graphics anyway.

There are also plenty of much better deals out there for $833: http://www.craigslist.org/asuss-laptop-ad-8991806

If you ask me, you'll struggle to pull more than maybe $220 unless you get lucky and some random person stumbles upon it.
PC Build + Peripherals.. $1,500 Budget in Desktops ·
Honestly, just tell your buddy to figure out what he actually needs from a printer—since this is for a business, he probably doesn't need the headache of a color inkjet and messing around with expensive ink cartridges. It’ll be way more cost-effective for him to just grab a laser MFP instead:
You could probably use something like this:

There aren't even separate inputs and outputs—it’s all just the same ports. You basically just plug the cables in and you're done.

You can chain them together however you want—as long as you’ve got enough open SATA3 ports available on the board.
Used PC builds: What are they worth? in Desktops ·
Oof, maybe $600-$233, provided you can actually track down someone willing to take it off your hands. Just leave the DVD drive inside since you're selling the whole rig anyway.
Need help building a new PC build... in Desktops ·
Maybe in some museum somewhere. 😁 I wouldn't even go so far as to say those things actually exist—I mean, audio cards don't really need that much bandwidth anyway. Those types of ports were mostly reserved for old-school SCSI adapters or maybe some video capture cards where you actually needed massive data throughput. Just shove a standard PCI card into that slot instead.
😕 You can’t connect that. I mean—what would be the point?

2 vs. 4 cores (LGA 775) in Desktops ·
John Clark9 said:I'm not buying anything new. That $200-$300 gap for $667 is just way too much for what I actually need to do.

The thing is—even if it's "fast"—it still feels sluggish. For instance, zipping and unzipping files takes forever, installing larger programs is a drag, and resizing videos from my camera is a chore. It even chokes when I try to open large PDF or PowerPoint files. I don't know, maybe it's because it only has 1MB of cache—which I assume matters—whereas the newer ones have 6 or 12

Still, I can't wrap my head around whether a higher clock speed or more cores actually matters for my specific setup. From what I've gathered, extra cores are mostly for heavy-duty gaming or pro software like Photoshop and Premiere...

Look, something is clearly wrong with your Windows installation. There’s absolutely no reason you should be struggling with PDFs and other basic nonsense on a processor like that. When was the last time you actually did a clean reinstall?

You can find an e8400 on eBay for $83, maybe even less.
Ethan Anderson10 said:So, what's your take on the ASUS Z97 H87-HD3? $27 It’s worth it just for those two extra USB 3.0 ports

Look, if you actually need to run more than four USB 3.0 devices at once, then yeah—go for it. 🤷 But honestly, what kind of crazy setup are you even running where you'd need that many?
That motherboard is way overpriced and honestly unnecessary—you don't need an SLI setup anyway. Something like this will be more than enough for you:

And there's zero reason to jump to a 550W power supply; a 430W modular one is plenty:

The Chaser is a pretty bad case—terrible ventilation, zero cable management, and the HDD bay is just a mess. The Corsair Carbide R200 is a much more solid choice, and it won't cost you much more:

That Quadro K600 graphics card is about $433, and it'll handle both AutoCAD 2006 and MATLAB just fine:

For an SSD:

You could probably pick up all your peripherals for around $600.
Logitech 2.1. Z323 vs. X-230: Which one should I get? in Computer Peripherals ·
It’s basically going from a stallion to a donkey—just a muddier sound with bass that hits way too hard. Honestly, you're better off hunting down some used X-230s instead:
