Give me a break.

You might want to glue that "mohawk" down tight for tomorrow, because everyone is getting their heads shaved tonight from NYC to LA to Chicago.

slymoose91 said:Douglas Taylor4, honestly, we really need to start swapping styles. Men shouldn't be expected to play it straight all the time, and women would probably look better leaning into something more kitschy.

That’s pretty much how I feel—even being a drag queen is starting to feel a bit repetitive.
Maybe if I switch up my avatar, I'll find some actual inspiration.
I just can't seem to find my voice lately.

this is (my) war!

1. Equating Black Flag solely with Henry Rollins is just as shallow and mindless as comparing Genesis to Phil Collins.

...you're right, warrior-woman. Black Flag isn't just Black Flag plus Henry Rollins, even if he’s the only frontman who actually walked away with a lasting "legacy." Then again, I tend to listen to music with my eyes, which probably messes with my perception.

2. I think any attempt to vent into the void is defeated the moment someone responds to such a stupid, empty, pathetic—or in short, kitschy—paragraph.

...so all my responses are meaningless, stupid, hollowly pathetic, and tacky? I don't know how else to communicate unless I switch over to the black-and-white worldview of Henry Rollins.

And on a serious note, I believe the Flag's legacy is far more influential and enduring than either The Fall or Sonic Youth.

...but unfortunately, they have a much weaker discography behind them (and I'm not even talking about their recent stuff), which is the only thing that matters when I'm listening with my ears.

Go ahead and crucify me, then maybe give it some thought (I'd appreciate it if you did that in reverse order).
Maybe those people listening to music strictly through their ears—with their romanticized, pastel-pink sensibilities—find it hard to grasp exactly why Black Flag is special.

...I see now that I should have voted for The Smiths, since they actually offer some hope to the youth.

To me, they were the first band to introduce and define an entirely different ethic and mindset within the music scene (which is essentially what draws most people to indie and "alternative" music today). I could have picked any early hardcore band, but Black Flag represents the core from which everything grew—the group that possessed the most influence, intelligence, ambition, and sheer will to overcome inertia.

...there were plenty of others who "overcame" inertia, but feel free to stick with Black Flag.

Plus, they made great music, though obviously, that's subjective.

...all of this is subjective, including my own experience with Black Flag.

Your war, you're one of them and I am not your friend.

Who here actually gives a damn about the Buzzcocks?

First off, toss slymoose91 into the dumpster because they have no idea how to weigh the actual stakes in a head-to-head matchup between The Fall and Morgan Parker5. Slymoose91 basically dissolved into a massive void back in the dark days of 1984.

Since the American white trash aesthetic of bands like Morgan Parker5 is much flashier and more colorful—think a neon-lit bodega—it appeals way more to younger crowds, sensitive types, and women. It easily cruises past The Fall’s "northern white trash" vibe, which feels like some dingy, dilapidated fish & chip stand.

I know I'm wasting my breath here, but I'll give my vote to The Fall simply because gray is more aesthetically pleasing than pink.

gentlepuma20 said:Man, your list is a total disaster. First off, leaving out "No Quarter" is a joke; it proves you have zero appreciation for that mystical, psychedelic vibe. Second, putting that hippie-dippie track at number one? Absolutely not. Third, "Since I've Been Loving You" blows "Dazed and Confused" out of the water. And honestly, this list is way too soft. Let's try this again from scratch!

gentlepuma20 aka Abyss the Slayer,

"Song Remains the Same" isn't some soft-rock hippie anthem; it’s pure, unadulterated rock and roll. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against "No Quarter," but honestly, "Since I've Been Loving You" absolutely runs circles around "Dazed and Confused."

Right now, it’s nothing but the heavy hitters...

Lately, I’ve been feeling more dragged down by the mindless zombies than the actual monsters, so I’ve decided to dive back into six albums that are actually worth my time:

It’s that specific turning point in your life where you realize that Ken Parker, Corto Maltese, and stuff like that represent the absolute peak. There’s nowhere left to go from there...

To me, he feels like someone from way out in the sticks.

That’s your call.
Personally, I have mixed feelings about Devendra Banhart.
The whole vibe feels a bit too gothic for my taste—all horror themes and visceral imagery.
Plus, generationally speaking, he doesn't really fit in with this lineup; he feels like a direct throwback to something you'd find at a newsstand in 1983 reading The Vjesnik.
On top of that, he just exists in the shadow of Marty Mystery, acting like some second cousin who carved out his own macabre little niche.
When Marty, Java, and Marty's blonde interest are all on stage chasing after Orli (?), there’s just no room left for Devendra Banhart and that circus act of his with the tweezers.

My apologies if I missed the boat when this thread first popped up.
I’ve only been around for two months myself.

1. Zagor - basically a demigod (definitely better than Tarzan)

2. Marty Mystery - the gold standard

3. Mr. No - a total loser

... then we hit the second tier...

4. Mark

5. Black

6. Tex Willer

7. Captain Mickey

8. Kit Tyler

9. Ken Parker*

*It's a shame I didn't realize his value until I was already old
** Just boring, overly groomed straight-edge nerds
*** A meathead bodybuilder with zero substance

For example, Wipers - Is This Real? (it's stuck in my head)

You two are such a twisted couple!
It’s almost like you were bonded together by nothing but a shared obsession with Slayer.

gentlepuma20, try showing a little more emotion once in a while, just like Nicholas Perez33 does.
He tends to get carried away with Magnetic fields and 100,000 sparks every now and then.

Anything else, sure, but boring? It’s over before you even realize it starts. 😁

Alright, I'll concede—it's boring, damn it. We're talking about roughly 32 minutes here. By "boring," I mean it just lacks that necessary punch to keep me hooked. I'll be vibing with it, and then suddenly someone starts screaming like an Oscar winner in some gritty noir film, or another track goes overboard with high-pitched solos, and my enthusiasm just flatlines. I don't get it.

And where does "god hates US All" fit in? At least it has the best title.

Pfft, I’m not exactly shaking in my boots. He’s turned into some soft indie-emo-alt-country sweetheart.
All that noise rock and death metal stuff? That’s ancient history. Still, I probably shouldn't let him see this; he’s got a wicked tongue and can type thirty times faster than I can.

I honestly think you can't claim to be a decent human being if you don't have respect for Housewife. Housewife is basically the Buzzcocks of the cookie world. 🙂

I'm with you on that.
But look, when you take a bite, you should actually taste the chocolate, not just a sugar rush.

1. I was a firsthand witness to the birth of the death metal subculture in Chicago, which revolved largely around the local club scene. It was a long-haired youth spent running in circles, shredding on air guitars, and headbanging in black Earache t-shirts. Zelig was just being a nuisance. Zzzz.

2. Swedish got hooked on death metal (the name almost sounds like death disco), so I diligently worked my way through the Earache and Roadrunner Records rosters, along with some thrash staples like Slayer and Metallica.

3. To be honest, the revolutionary "Reign in Blood" used to bore me. But ever since they cleaned up their thrash image and leaned harder into that NYC hardcore sound...

4. A few years back, while staying in some hotel room during an official tour, I found myself strangely entertained by an old Metallica video—maybe a music video or a metal ballad? There’s a guy lying on his deathbed, the atmosphere is grim, the guys are playing guitars with expressions as serious as death, and it feels like it lasts for eternity. And I was just sitting there feeling miserable.

5. I loved the concept behind Carcass, but the actual music... man, it stank like a rotting corpse. Swedish headed off to a concert in San Francisco, leaving me stuck in this gray, sleepless city.

6. Sepultura earns a few points for that whole apocalypse-from-the-jungle vibe. They didn't quite infect me, though. Apparently, I'm supposed to listen to "Roots."

7. For a while, I actually considered Pestilence's "Testimony of the Ancients" to be a solid album.

8. Black Metal? Brrr... I only read about that stuff in the crime sections of the newspaper.

9. Because of the death metal mania, I completely neglected Godflesh. What a tragedy.

10. I eventually realized that Napalm Death's "Scum" is absolute perfection, but even that is a far cry from the true essence of metal.

Metal is honestly just like hardcore pornography: it's thrilling for ten, fifteen, maybe twenty minutes, and then it gets boring. Fast forward, 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x, 32x, stop. The DVD is greasy and keeps skipping.

Zelig just doesn't get metal (jazz).

Help!

cody said:I've got the Pure record.
I can't quite put my finger on it—back in the day, I was big into industrial, so Godflesh was always part of the rotation—but it’s been at least a decade since I really sat down with them. Still, looking back, I think it was a solid album.

I used to spin "Pure" too, but honestly, it felt way too suicidal for me at the time.
I was just too young and way too healthy to wrap my head around it.
That said, I actually ended up preferring "Pure" over "Streetcleaner."
My buddy Swedish moved on from his teenage death metal phase right after listening to "Pure," so Godflesh eventually dropped out of my collection entirely.
It's a shame. Nowadays, "Pure" is either out of print or getting impossible to find, and here I am finally giving Godflesh the respect they deserve. Groff would probably spit on me if he knew. My bad.
