Rachel Lee4, honestly, mine is even stronger. If it didn't have a head on its back and just had tools on its chest instead, that would be my pick. Maybe.

Sorry for being an independent soul who doesn't need external validation to experience a catharsis.

No need to apologize. Everything is totally fine. It’s just that for me, it didn't quite hit that breaking point. It's not at all that the band or the show was bad. However...

Oh yeah, even though I prefer the Plank phase when I'm listening at home in the dark, at a live show, those albums from the two-thousands and their anthem actually suit the vibe better.

The only thing I really caught was some guy wearing a House of Lies T-shirt; that would have been cool.

For me, seeing someone in a Death in June shirt was the highlight. Watching the parade of concert outfits is always entertaining.
The only downside was the crowd—completely brainless. Honestly, it felt like a bunch of guys who haven't seen a woman in years.

The vibe was just completely off.

The vibe was just... off. It honestly felt like there weren't enough die-hard Killing Joke fans in the crowd to really set the tone. I wasn't necessarily expecting everyone to lose their minds or belt out every chorus, but still, something essential was missing from the room.

That’s exactly why the show was such an absolute downer for me. Nirvana at Madison Square Garden on 10.06.2010 was just... off. The collective energy from the crowd was toxic.

It’s actually the exact opposite of that dive bar I read about—the one that was located right over in the cowboy district of town at the same time. 😠

Look, obviously I’m not trying to turn a Killing Joke concert into some mindless cattle call at a county fair. That's just not how this works. Get your head in the game!

I tried hanging a T-shirt up on a cross and a hammer, but I quickly realized it wasn't worth the effort and gave up.

Luckily, my taxi driver actually put me in a good mood on the way home. We spent the ride listening to some Jazz, just geeking out over the subtle nuances of the drumming and all that.

Nicholas King62, you know, since I’m currently sitting here with zero inspiration for anything productive, you should honestly just put together some sort of CD Baby/MP3 folder compilation covering those dead years: 2000-2010. Ever since I started actually paying attention to the scene again, I can't seem to shake the mainstream stuff or those washed-up punk and rock veterans. I just don't have the stamina for the MySpace era vibes, but I’d really love to hear some raw, aggressive outsiders for once.

Raymond Bailey6, please, throw something into the mix too.

bum, I'm looking to return the favor. Just tell me how.

damn beat! greetings from New York City.

Why did I miss out on Vienna? 😠

First off, those sharp English guys who covered Mr. Curtis Mayfield:Move On Up

And then there's Ted Leo and The Pharmacists with Where have all the ruda boys gone?

Jeboga, it physically reminds me of Weller.

A police car and a screaming siren,
A pneumatic drill and ripped up concrete,
A baby wailing and stray dog howling,
at any given moment could be what you hear on 'FMU,
and that's entertainment... That's entertainment...

Kyle Jackson54 said:A band I used to be in toured the States with Ted Leo a couple of times. Back then, he was living in the Chinatown district of Boston in some kind of immense warehouse space, five stories up—which meant hauling all the gear up the stairs, obviously. His "apartment" was packed with this wild assortment of boho clutter, like old dentist chairs and theatrical stage sets. And yeah, I should probably mention there was an actual stage in there. The living room alone was roughly the size of a tennis court. It was the dead of summer, sweltering hot, and we ended up sitting around a table with our shirts off, counting out all the merch cash. Just piles of dollars spread out on the table like we were some kind of mobsters. Cheers, Ted Leo. You were a great guy, and honestly, you had the most incredible setup I’ve ever laid eyes on.

It’s not happening, Wrongek, just let it go. I totally get where he's coming from.

Aside from that, he’s my buddy for refusing to put Thermalsmanija on blast here. Right? 😬

Anyway, here is the winning streak from the album Tyranny of distance : Parallel or Together:

Just so we don't spend the whole thread talking about Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, let's clutter things up by mentioning Ash and MSP.

Ash were those little teenagers from Northern Ireland—the kind of youth who would pose for NME magazine while blasting a Stranglers Rattus Norvegicus record, claiming they only listened to music from 1977 and churning out seasonal half-hits for the radio. The second they mentioned loving '77, I found them slightly tolerable. Beyond that, I have no clue.

MSP was that wild youth scene, constantly high and shredding guitars, dominating the British music gossip columns for days, months, years. Holy Bible is probably okay.

I'm feeling slighted, so consider this spam. 😢

Why didn't you guys just answer him? It's not like he's going to go out and Google it. It’s just some low-tech strip featuring the mo ' Living ep, which if I remember correctly, was released as an MP3 bonus alongside Living with The Living.

Gatekeeper! 😉

Just tell them, Mick—threaten them with drumsticks. 🙂

Honestly, you guys are just being mean. Where are things like Parallel or Together, Bridges, or Squares? 😠

Portun is basically trying to shove Ted Leo into an indie rock box on a whim. 😢

darksurfer24, who else would you put him with? Ash? Manic Street Preachers? A bunch of Celtic rockers?

Personally, I’d be all over it. Ted Leo is pure PUNK! :p🔥

You need to pair him with a real crew, someone like the icons you listed below.

Headliner:

Ted Leo & the Pharmacists

Support acts:

Thin Lizzy
The Jam
The Clash
Elvis Costello & the Attractions (okay, that Love-Me-Do geek is annoying, but the music is solid)
Bob Marley & the Wailers
The Pogues

...

They're all five-star picks, darksurfer24. As long as it turns out how you envisioned it. I'm just sketching out a lineup for some random garage party in the near future...
Give me a break, you guys are acting completely wasted. It’s like an entire generation just threw its potential down the drain for a drink.

So, what’s the deal—did that indie baller blow it?
The Hold Steady. Really likable guys. Their sound is solid, nothing to complain about.

The Roots. Great groove, but it didn't quite hit the mark for me. Too bad I was stuck wearing a backpack.

!!!. It’s a total experience only if you're fully engaged, because otherwise, it feels like nothing more than an endurance sport. I’m going to try my best to scrub that frontman from my memory.

The Stooges. Honestly, they were even better than I expected.
Sonic Youth were absolutely incredible. There was something so great about watching them jump around and lose themselves on stage. 😍

I missed the indie showcase again. I’m such an idiot. 😢

Everything else on the lineup is irrelevant to me.

I started and finished my journey right here:

Pure, youthful noise-rock.

I have no clue what happened after that. I heard about how they handled Diana. Honestly, I wish I hadn't.

Now I'm seriously considering downloading Kavkaška Psychosis all over again... 🙂

Taylor Patel2 said:they want to be cool, at least by being cool

Alright, look, they’re cool enough. But like Nicholas Perez33 mentioned, the actual album feels... stunted. Weak. It’s like they devolved into middle schoolers—all synthesizers, flashy MTV music videos, and those cheap plastic sci-fi prop guns. Just superficial stuff. They're basically sitting in the back of the class with the kids.

I’ve never been one to obsess over demo tapes, either. For me, the peak is Freedom of Choice.

That punk enthusiast is always bragging about that Mabuhay Gardens bootleg. Honestly, it might be worth a listen sometime.

Bottom line: I'm not some hardcore Deva disciple. I don't claim that title.

Anyway, I'm just bored, so...

Taylor Patel2 said:The guy above just claimed that the album featuring "Beautiful World" isn't even worth ten bucks. 😲 Are you kidding me right now? Are you actually serious? You clearly haven't heard a single thing about what real eighties synth music actually sounds like.

I also wanted to mention that I’d pick up the "Beautiful World" single if it were actually available. It’s really the only moment worth mentioning or even bothering to listen to.

I gave NTS another shot a few years back. It didn't work out. It’s just not my style of sound.

Go ahead and get worked up if you want to. It won't change anything.
Are we not men? We are Devo! in Music ·
...when it comes to Deva, the mainstream critics are dead wrong. They don't just have 3great albums. Don't listen to those pundits who just parrot the same tired, recycled opinions. Deva didn't sell out by leaning into more synths; they were constantly evolving.

Regarding Deva, I actually have to side with the critics here. This fourth album is nothing but typical 80s synth-pop garbage. It lacks any real synth "guts." Honestly, I couldn't even finish it. I lost interest completely.

It’s not worth even $3.25 much, regardless of how cheap you find a used vinyl at a local record shop.

The album is up on Discord, and honestly, it’s got that polished bass sound you’d expect from a Discord release. The tracks themselves are short and straightforward, built out of repetitive phrases that:

a) thanks to some really solid drumming, can actually sound like they were pulled straight out of a post-rock history book—you know, that era before everything just devolved into the standard Mogwai clones,

I gave it a listen. It’s definitely catchy. Hypnotic, even. These guys know how to play. The guitar tone is dry, almost skeletal, while the bass keeps things at a steady mid-tempo. The drummer hits with a bit of an anemic touch, and the vocalist has a slightly nasal quality. You could easily mistake them for a band that stepped right out of a 1979 Rough Trade shop, recorded DIY by Ian MacKaye. It feels old-school Discord. Fans of Calvin and K Records would probably dig this. It’s great background music for just chilling out in the living room.
