But relatively recently on another thread (I think we were discussing Taxi Driver), people started really tearing him apart. Maybe "tearing him apart" is a bit dramatic for what was actually written, but regardless, there wasn't a single positive thing to be found.
Is this whole thread just about dumping everyone else's opinions on Robert De Niro here?
Honestly, I don't give a damn and I'm not even interested. The only two American films I've actually sat through are those Brešan classics, and if Father Unpunished says they aren't top-tier, then fine... but for god's sake, stay the hell away from war comedies or war dramas. They're just biting off way more than they can chew with those genres, and what's worse is they just won't stop biting...
So yeah, count me in for American film 👍 but as for those big shots sitting in their offices 👎
I was expecting a lot more, but honestly, I got next to nothing. I can't help but wonder how much better this would've been if Christopher Nolan had directed it instead of this total hack...
John Hall said:The DVD is already out, just not here in the States yet. I actually stumbled upon a pretty interesting article about the film... I was just reading this piece about how much of an impact *Rescue Dawn* had on people... man, that movie really stays with you. It’s one of those stories where you can't help but feel the grit under your fingernails. Watching Christian Bale go through that transformation is just wild... he really committed to the role. The way Herzog handled the whole vibe of Vietnam was so raw, too. It didn't feel like some polished Hollywood production; it felt heavy. You could almost smell the jungle through the screen. And Guy Pearce? Absolutely incredible. He brought such a specific kind of desperation to the part... it's hard to watch sometimes, but you can't look away. It makes you wonder how many other films capture that level of pure, unadulterated tension without relying on cheap tricks... honestly, I haven't seen anything quite like it since.
I honestly don't even know where to start... 🙏 🙏 🙏 Honestly, the only thing left to tell him would have been to go ahead and snack on some earwax or maybe something from his nose if he was really that desperate for a solid meal... 🤣
Larry Cooper40 said:The movie actually pulled some great reviews—Herzog is clearly back in top form and everyone's raving about it—but it bombed hard at the US box office. Probably means we won't even see it in theaters over here...
Honestly, that’s what fascinates me about Christian Bale. I don't think he's ever made a movie that isn't a total blast to watch. I mean, he's got absolute masterpieces under his belt—Batman, The Prestige, Memento... the list goes on. But somehow, his films (unless there are a few outliers) constantly tank at the box office, just like this one is doing. 🤷
He's a low-key, happily married guy, so maybe he's just missing that flashy Hollywood glitz needed to actually make some bank...🤷 🤷
I also read somewhere that Bale actually starved himself for this role, dropping maybe 20 or 30 pounds just to get the look... kind of similar to what he did for Disappearance.
I mean, there’s definitely something going on with all those Terminator movies, Aliens, Blade Runner, Flash Gordon... all that stuff about aliens and killer robots from the future. But honestly? I’m pretty sure we’re gonna tear ourselves apart way before that happens, just because of how reckless we are with everything on this planet—climate issues and all that. We’ll probably rebuild some kind of society first, and then maybe the Terminators can come for us...
The day after tomorrow 🙏 🙏 🙏
If we actually make it through that, then the rest of the 🙂 should be a breeze.
So I saw that Rescue Dawn is hitting US theaters soon. Starting a thread for this film since I've been seeing a ton of rave reviews, especially because my absolute favorite, Christian Bale, is starring in it, but if I'm being totally honest, I don't have the slightest clue what this movie is actually about...
Why isn't it in theaters yet, and is it even going to show up considering it was filmed back in 2006? Why is there so little buzz about it, even on major American sites? And how did they even get the title translated for the American market? Help me out here. 🤷 🤷
The movie isn't exactly a masterpiece, but there’s this little something about it that just hits me right in the feels... I don't even know how to put it into words. It’s basically watching people who think they're misunderstood by the rest of the world. You can criticize it all you want, but it's definitely not a bad film.
Also, quick question: why on earth was the English title *Kelly's Heroes* translated as *Gold for the taking*? 🤷 I honestly don't see the connection at all...
Interesting tidbit—didn't realize that about Sutherland. Did a little digging and found out they actually shot the movie in California because those rolling fields there look just like Normandy...
Also, I’m totally with you on this—networks should be airing movies like this way more often. I don't see any real reason why it's an issue, though I've seen similar debates on other forums that usually just go nowhere... 🤷 🤷 (For instance, I can't even remember if they ever aired Brubaker with Redford, or maybe Bullitt with McQueen?)
There’s this little video rental shop just outside the outskirts of Chicago, and they specialize exclusively in Netflix releases. They basically have everything released in America on disc—everything from the classics and new hits to those weird movies you really wish had stayed unfilmed... though I don't know if that actually helps you out. If you ever find yourself wandering around the area, you should definitely check them out 🤷 🤷
