Monitor buying guide (mega-thread) in Computer Peripherals ·

Any advice?

Go 1440p. No brainer.

Mark Wright69 said:I'm hunting for a monitor (or monitors) for some amateur programming and sys-admin stuff. A little YouTube here and there, plus the occasional AutoCAD/ElectroCAD session every third year. Zero gaming involved.
Right now, I've got my sights set on a Dell U2419H, maybe adding a second one later.
Specs—non-TN (I need those deep blacks in my terminal), non-glossy, size is TBD—maybe 20-24"? FHD works fine for me; don't think I need more, but I won't complain if I find something better (as long as it's at least 2560x1600@60Hz, which is the max for my ThinkPad T430s).
Must have an internal power supply. I am not dealing with some bulky power brick mess like you get with laptops.
Budget is roughly $667 per monitor, but I can budge. I peeked at some of those massive, cheap junk models, but I'm not sure if they're bad for me or just bad design.
My desk is only about 24 inches deep, and my eyesight isn't exactly top-tier.

Any recommendations on which monitors are actually "healthy" for your eyes? I heard some Dell models have decent PWM management so they don't flicker.
Then again... who knows how much that matters when I'll be spending 8 hours a day at work staring at some bottom-of-the-barrel garbage monitor anyway. 😁

I'm running a Phillips 272b8qjeb$603 at my office in San Diego.

She’s on a tight budget, so she needs something cheap that actually gets the job done—accurate colors, decent resolution, the works...

We’ve narrowed it down to a few options, so I’m looking for some advice on which one is the best bet.

Look, I have the Dell U2412M. It's an older model and honestly? It's garbage for professional photo editing.
It uses an e-IPS panel with only 6-bit color. Total joke.

Also, those links you posted are pretty much broken.

Adam Moore3 said:I'm looking for some recommendations for a business laptop in the roughly $1667 range. If there's a significant jump in quality, I wouldn't mind stretching my budget by a couple hundred bucks.

Here's what I'm looking for:
  1. Ideally 16GB of RAM, but if that's not an option, it absolutely needs an open slot so I can upgrade it to 16GB myself later.
  2. Dual video outputs—HDMI plus DisplayPort would be ideal, though I'm open to mini DP or whatever other options are available.
  3. Something lightweight but built like a tank.
  4. A 14" screen would be perfect, but nothing larger than 15.6".
  5. A 256GB SSD is plenty; I don't need an HDD.

Basically, I want a fast, portable business machine that can drive two external monitors. Price isn't the biggest dealbreaker; I can go a bit higher if the machine is worth it. 🙂

I’ve noticed some brands offer 12 months for business users but bump it up to 24 months for individual consumers.

My old IBM r40 had a killer warranty—I ran that thing for 10 years straight without a single hiccup.

But look, regardless of how much coverage you have, you still gotta back everything up.😒
Jose Thompson61 said:That’s the one. Budget isn't really the main headache here—I mean, if you're asking how much I actually want to shell out, obviously I'd love to spend next to nothing and just get as much music as possible.
I'm mostly just checking in to figure out what my baseline should be, since I'm clearly flying blind on this. Honestly, I wouldn't even mind a used laptop if it does the trick.
Thanks for getting back to me 🙂
Toshiba Satellite L50-B-2HF, 15.6" HD LED 1366x768, Intel Core i7-5500U 3.0 GHz, 8GB DDR3, 256GB SSD, Intel ® hd Graphics 5500, DVD-RW, Bluetooth, Intel ® dual band Wireless-AC 3160, Gigabit LAN, HD web kamera, HDMI, USB3.0, Windows 8.1 64, jamstveno 24 mjeseca, PSKTGE-03H00DY4

That 1366x768 screen? You're gonna be staring at giant pixels all day.
If you're doing any kind of audio or video work, an IPS panel is a non-negotiable, and you definitely want full HD (honestly, that's pretty much the baseline these days).
When you've got your software open, you'll need space to lay out your tools on one side and keep your video or photos visible on the other.
And don't waste your money on a 120GB SSD. For a tiny bit more, you can grab a 240 or 250GB SSD, which is way smarter.

I have no clue what laptops are going for right now, but those are the absolute minimum specs you should look for.
Get an SSD, seriously. 🎉
You could even just pop one in yourself after you buy it. 😉

If you're doing photo editing, you're gonna need a decent monitor,
but how good a laptop screen actually is... that's a whole different story.

Make sure it's an IPS panel. No exceptions.

Ever thought about just getting two separate machines? Grab one fancy MFP (scanner, printer, fax) and one dedicated workhorse printer for high-volume jobs.

An MFP that tries to do both well is insanely expensive.
Since you're running an accounting firm, I'm guessing you'll be cranking out a ton of pages. Toner for an MFP is just plain overpriced, especially if you want color. Honestly, who needs color for accounting paperwork? You'll likely be printing a massive amount of stuff.

Plus, those all-in-one MFPs are usually slow. They take forever to spit out that first page, whereas a dedicated printer is way faster.
That delay really adds up when you're busy, especially if a standard printer saves you 10 seconds per job.

For the Wi-Fi setup, you can always just grab a print server and hook everything up via USB—you don't necessarily need to buy the wireless versions of the printers.
It’s a slightly more technical workaround, sure, but it gives you way more flexibility.

Do some math on your monthly print volume and run the numbers.

Frank Barnes said:Look, I’m clearly a bit slow here, so maybe walk me through this whole "two-year warranty" thing because it doesn't add up $73. Here's my math: you buy a brand new printer and it comes with four toner cartridges, all bundled in for $667. But if you go out and buy four fresh toners separately, you're looking at paying 4 * $185
.
http://www.amazon.com/hp

So basically, every single time, you have to shell out extra $73 just to maintain the warranty that supposedly came with the damn printer.

I haven't even figured out what that two-year warranty actually ends up costing me yet.

Either I'm an idiot, or some genius designed this specifically to fleece idiots like me.

God, it's fun playing dumb.
Someone who's been posting on this forum for years and selling inkjet systems shouldn't be this clueless about the fact that you don't actually get full-capacity toners when you buy a new printer. 😒

Neither of those printers has auto-duplexing. Most of those MFPs have color scanners, though. Do you actually need color printing, or just a color scanner?

Do your homework on the maintenance costs: check the toner price and how often you'll be swapping out the drum.
Usually, you pay a bit more upfront for the machine, but then the toner ends up being way cheaper.
Plus, you can always dial back the print resolution to something acceptable—it'll make prints faster and the toner last longer.

Otherwise, if you guys start pushing the printer too hard, you're gonna be pissed because the thing is crawling.
Make sure you check the "first page out" time. That matters.
Having Wi-Fi definitely bumps up the price. Do you really need it?

Also, you can always hook a device up to a print server (most routers have a USB port for that kind of thing).
So maybe you don't even need a networked printer.

Frank Barnes said:Look, why don't you be a pal and explain how the belt warranty actually works if you start using third-party toners?

So, I burn through those first 60,000 pages with the OEM stuff, and once that coverage hits its limit, then I switch over to the cheap knockoffs. Or does it work differently?

Come on, enlighten us here.

It’s exactly like having a 10-year warranty on a Ford, provided you only take it to their dealerships and happily pay three times the price for their parts.😵

I’ve been running a Kyocera for years now. Started out strictly on original toners, but now I use generics and the thing runs like a dream. 🎉

The drum is rated for 100,000 prints. So, besides watching what I spend on toner, I have to keep an eye on the drum costs too—that's still part of the total cost of ownership.

I wouldn't touch an inkjet even if they paid me. Once you go laser, you stay laser.
I had an inkjet for a hot minute, just like a lot of people. Now? I run the other way.
Printer issues? in Computer Peripherals ·
Check out this Boeing 737 (about $667)

The drum comes with a 60,000-page warranty life.
It prints way faster than the competition and you get two years of coverage.

Also, take note that these printers actually support generic toner.
Though, I’m pretty sure you aren't supposed to touch those while the warranty is still active.

Not sure why anyone even needs Wi-Fi on this thing. Just plug it into the Ethernet and call it a day.
