Honestly, who actually cares if someone’s just standing there with their hands in their pockets, catching up with friends, sipping a beer, or just vibing in the front row... There was always a decent number of people doing exactly that compared to those dancing hard, so you definitely didn't feel like an outsider if you just wanted to unwind and listen to the music... I know this is a forum and everyone has the right to vent their little complexes and talk trash without being judged, but some people really take it way too far. Like, what difference does it make when Moby, Foo Fighters, or Yee are playing and ten thousand people are losing their minds, that those ten people chatting at the back with a drink in hand are bothering anyone? And that whole idea about 70% of people showing up just because there was nothing else happening in town is honestly just ridiculous. If you didn't realize, tickets were $183 on the day of the show—who on earth has that kind of money just to wander around and see what's happening? Even though all this talk about idiots throwing wristbands at the stage makes it sound like a random crowd just stumbled in, I think it's highly unlikely anyone ended up at this festival by accident, since even the cheapest ticket at $83 is pretty steep for us, especially during these weird economic times...

The outdoor stages could only run until midnight, though they pushed it back to 1 AM later on, so that delay wasn't really avoidable. It isn't the organizers' fault, it's just people not wanting the loud music to keep the retirees awake... On the first day, Dorfmeister put on a totally solid party, even if it isn't my usual style, and the tent was packed, plus it went until a little after 2 AM so nobody had any reason to complain...
Gary Baker3 said:Can anyone who drove in tell me what the hourly rate is? It's kind of urgent since I'm heading out in about two hours... Thanks!

$1.00 it’s about twenty bucks an hour. I’m actually planning on driving in today too, but it’s such a pain that there isn't really any parking right by the entrance, so you'll probably have to leave it by the small lake near Aquarius or a bit further out by the big one near where the old Jure used to be, though I have a feeling those spots will already be taken... If you think you're going to be staying for a while, I'd honestly just park over by the Middle area and take the fifteen-minute walk to the festival, which is what I did yesterday...
Gary Baker3 said:Does anyone have an idea what Moby’s setlist might look like? I wonder if he’ll be playing tracks from his old albums like >, >, >, >, >, or >... or if it’s just going to feel more like a techno party...

Honestly, it’s a bit silly they haven't announced whether Moby is doing a live set or just a DJ set, but since this is the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, it'll most likely be a live performance... and honestly, that's probably for the best, because I've heard he isn't really much of a DJ anyway (though his production isn't exactly top-tier either)... At the end of the day, he’s one of those artists I wouldn't go see alone, but since he's already on the lineup and if his set doesn't clash with someone more interesting, it won't hurt to go check him out...

Hehe, it’s funny how the older crowd used to talk about 80s music when the boy band craze first started hitting us all...

Lady Gaga is basically just a white version of Rihanna...

Exactly. Let's be honest here, the music was honestly pretty trash and the whole movement was basically just designed to squeeze every last cent out of teenagers, but man, you can't even argue if you wouldn't trade all these modern Rihannas and Lady Gagas for someone like Beksić and his crowd. If I turn on the radio and hear Tearing up my Heart, or if I flip on the TV and see those guys doing those weird little dance moves on that giant silver sphere—now that I think about it, aside from the fact they couldn't sing, play an instrument, or even actually dance, how did they even manage to sell it? Edit: oh right, the looks...

They just stayed stuck in the 90s, along with Dance, Guns N' Roses, Grunge, AIDS, and all that other nonsense...
They really should have just brought out Katy Perry instead...

Just because you listen to serious music doesn't mean you have to be such a serious person yourself...
You really ought to try tapping into that sense of humor a bit more...

And yeah, back in his 8mm days, Machin used to get all revved up listening to Aphex's Come to Daddy, which honestly feels like much more fitting music for him, though he still had that whole boy-next-door vibe where you'd never suspect a thing...

Carl Mendoza87 said:That's an interesting way to look at it, I guess, though I suppose if you follow the logic that whatever you personally enjoy is top-tier quality while everything else everyone else listens to is just total garbage... then yeah, that works too 👍 if that's how you want to play it

So, what part of this sentence was actually confusing to you:

Carl Mendoza87 said:And look, I don't get him either, but I could easily say you just don't understand hard techno or schranz because it's simply not your thing...

The thing is, my dislike for schranz isn't about thinking the whole genre is garbage, it's just not for me. It's kind of like how I don't really vibe with The Velvet Underground, but I'm certainly not going to start an internet war over them just because I don't "get" it. At least I can be honest about that, unlike most people on this forum who act like they've mastered all the world's wisdom, and I'm not just talking about you...

Carl Mendoza87 said:Then please, just walk me through what exactly defines minimal

It's just a concept that someone leaning toward schranz or hard techno probably won't be able to wrap their head around...

Carl Mendoza87 said:I don't really consider minimal to be techno, though there are a few tracks I can get behind and some minimal producers or DJs that I actually enjoy...
I'm not hating on the whole genre, I just personally can't stand it, especially that repetitive plink-plonk stuff where you go five minutes without hearing even ten seconds of an actual melody...

Yeah, sounds like you just haven't wrapped your head around it yet...

Carl Mendoza87 said:everyone has their own taste, and you can't really argue with what someone likes...

That's usually the excuse people use when they just have bad taste...

Man, you're heading in the wrong direction. You really need to switch things up...🤣

And don't be so quick to dismiss minimal, there's a pretty good chance you haven't actually heard the real stuff yet—not the cheap "mnml" garbage everyone and their cousin is spinning and producing these days. Instead of treating Kröcher and Liebing like they're the only gods in the game, maybe give some old-school Hood, Bello, or Dixon a spin instead...

Anyway, Detroit techno is usually seen as the predecessor to house music. You’ve also got techno which is the German version, and its predecessors were Kraftwerk (though Kraftwerk definitely influenced Detroit techno too)...

For me, Atkins and Saunderson were at their best during the Inner City project (stuff like Big Fun, Good Life, Set Your Body Free). Saunderson was part of the group while Atkins handled the production...

Then you have Phuture from Chicago, who are considered the first acid house group, and their acid tracks actually helped make Ron Hardy famous...😉

As for those homemade mixes, Detroit techno was actually known for being composed of all these homemade tracks, and that's basically how it all started:

"Midway through the 80s, many Chicago DJs and clubgoers started experimenting with creating their own rhythm tracks. DJs would play these homemade tracks, and (in short) this is how house music was born"

😉

Jesus, looks like someone's trying to act like an expert again without really knowing the facts...
Nobody besides you considers Detroit techno to be the precursor to house music, and even though those first primitive techno sounds popped up in 1981—well before the first house records—there's almost no real connection between that early techno and the later house sound. The official techno story kicks off in 1985 with Atkins' Metroplex label and those first releases under the model 500 moniker (no UFO's, Play IT cool), whereas the first house record appeared a year earlier, and house itself was already happening at various parties in the Warehouse and Music Box. Besides, techno has always been about futurism, space, electricity, and darker themes, while house grew out of disco and blended in influences from funk, soul, and other "warmer" Black musical styles. Vocals and piano lines have been there since house started, but they didn't show up in techno until 1987 when May and Saunderson began flirting with what we call Detroit house—a blend of the two genres. That was really the first time house and techno actually met. Atkins never really embraced that sound, and he never actually produced for Inner City, the most prominent Detroit house project (though he did do a couple of friendly remixes)... Techno moved to England in the early 90s, then to Germany (where they immediately created their own version of techno—faster, darker, and much less melodic than Detroit techno), then to Belgium and the rest of Europe. Personally, I'm most into the British version of Detroit techno, that broken and beatless style used by people like Kirk Degiorgio, Matt Cogger, the Black doga crew, B12, and John Beltran... The ultimate techno album for me is The Philosophy of sound and Machin...

Two more corrections: there's no such thing as the "Belleville Four," it's the "Belleville Three," and while Fowlkes went to that high school, he wasn't part of that specific crew. Though the guy definitely belongs among those three in terms of importance and influence. Also, Phuture didn't make Ron Hardy famous; it was the other way around. Ron Hardy was already an established DJ by then (probably alongside Knuckles as the most important figure in Chicago), whereas Phuture hadn't released a record or had any impact on the scene until Ron started playing them...
Look, that’s just life, you know? Stuff like this is bound to happen, and honestly, it would be weirder if things were any different... The only real sting is feeling like you lost face in front of everyone. Just try to push through it and you'll see that things settle down later on... Of course, there will always be some assholes out there, but they definitely won't be as much as they were back in high school. College is really your first real chance to test that out
How do I stop biting my nails? in Psychology ·
I honestly don't even think about my nails unless I'm sitting there trying to study... then suddenly they become this huge distraction. Once I start hitting the books, I'll spend half an hour just fidgeting with them, messing with my technique, or picking at them... I guess it’s just my own little way of procrastinating instead of actually getting work done...
