How to edit posts? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
You have the ability to edit your posts as long as the option remains available to you. By default, you get a 90-minute window. However, certain subforums might have different rules in place. For instance, on the Corner for banned users, editing is completely disabled. At least, that's my understanding.

Is this even a question? 🤔
Spelling check in Forum Help! ·
That’s not an issue with this forum, it's your browser. You have the spell checker turned on. If you're using Chrome, type about:config into the address bar, find layout.spellcheckDefault, and set it to 0 (then restart). I don't know about other browsers.

Matthew Grant9 said:Thanks again for the help, because I finally figured everything out! I came up with a brand new, super effective experiment to test this theory.😵 I was poking around my own profile just now and realized there's actually an option to send a PM to myself, just like you would to anyone else on the site. So, I decided to try sending one to myself, and this popped up:
The following errors occurred with your submission:

1. You have reached your stored private message quota and cannot send any further messages until space has been created.
2. Matthew Grant9 has exceeded their stored private messages quota and cannot accept further messages until they clear some space.

So, if anyone else out there is currently wasting their time on silly little troubleshooting experiments like I am...
It turns out you can't send them OR receive them once you're at the limit.😛

Now the only question left is whether you can still DM a moderator if their inbox is totally full. If you want to test it out, feel free to try sending one to me.

Matthew Grant9 said:Oh my goodness, are you actually being serious right now?😲 83 warnings or penalties? I mean, what on earth is this guy doing out there?😕

So, "receive" is the key word there? Does that mean the ones I send don't count toward that 75? Are you absolutely positive about that?
Well, whether you're sure or not, thanks so much for the effort and for getting back to me so quickly!🙏
:you'd make a great admin:

My bad. I misspoke. You can have a maximum of 75 PM's total—that includes both incoming and outgoing. Once you hit that limit, you can only receive messages from mods or admins. Not entirely sure how the sending side works.
Direct Messages [DM] in Feedback & Suggestions ·
You can receive up to 75 PM's (or whatever the current cap is), but that doesn't apply to messages from mods or admins. They can always send you a PM, regardless of whether you've hit your limit or not.

If you actually knew how to use that information, things would be crystal clear. You have the specific term now; just type it into Google and find your answer.

If you can't figure that out on your own, that's not my problem. 🤷

Lisa Hernandez3 said:But since the app was translated into American English, it was supposedly tailored for users in our linguistic region (though I'm not entirely sure which specific parts still feel off, but those are minor details). So, whoever handled the localization probably didn't anticipate that gender would be such a factor within the post itself. Maybe they weren't being intentional, or maybe they were just following standard industry practice.

Btw, regarding that instance where a moderator couldn't tell which gender a user belonged to—honestly, I doubt it would have helped even if their gender had been clearly labeled. Confusion in addressing people happens regardless of whether you underline or highlight their gender a hundred times. And, in my opinion, these little mix-ups are less offensive or significant—they're mostly just communication hiccups—compared to the issues that might arise if the forum were viewed as a population strictly divided into men, women, and non-binary individuals. Why? Well, just look at the original post again.

But hey, it’s fine if you don't see things through that lens.

Whoever did the localization did a sloppy, rushed job just so it would superficially look like American English. The evidence is everywhere. Just look at how some controls are in English while others are translated.

Those things are easy enough to fix. The issues I'm talking about are much harder because the app's design doesn't account for them. The reason is that American English grammar has fundamental differences compared to how we structure things here.

Here are two quick examples:
"The number of messages in Inbox is 17."
"Inbox (17 Messages)"

In the first example—incorrect grammar. The app's architecture doesn't support proper declension.

In the second, there isn't support for different plural forms which exist in our language but not in English. And it goes deeper than that. Even singular nouns can appear in plural contexts.
(1 messages, 2 messages, 3 messages, 4 messages, 5 messages, ..., 21 messages, 22 messages, ...)
Essentially, these aren't just different plural forms. It's about how the case changes based on the number. With 1, you need a specific form; with 2, 3, and 4, it's one thing; and with 5 through 10 or 11 through 14, it's another. This happens regardless of the digit preceding it. But I'll leave the linguistics to the experts... Regardless, it's fundamentally different from English, where everything after 1 is simply plural.

It is impossible to fix these issues without digging deep into the app's core code.

Anyway, back to the point. 😁 We clearly see this differently, so let's just leave it at that. 🙂
Casey Campbell said:Does the admin even check their emails!?

No. 😁 (at least as far as I know)

Casey Campbell said:I've been a long-time user of this Reddit, so I was wondering if all posted content will continue to be stored on the server and remain publicly accessible via search engines in the future?

That's the plan, but nobody can give you a guarantee. If you have posts or threads that are actually important, you'd better archive them yourself.

Casey Campbell said:Is there any way to list all the threads I've participated in (or at least the topics I've started) on a single page, or am I stuck using a search engine to find and save them one by one?

I think you're stuck with the search engine. 😢

Lisa Hernandez3 said:Maybe look at it this way—why would whoever designed the post layout and those little captions next to them overlook how much gender matters for this specific section of the forum? And yet, they still left the option to include it in the private settings—within the user profile.

I never actually said that displaying gender alongside posts was inherently bad or strictly negative; I just meant it’s prone to all sorts of interpretations—which is pretty obvious—especially when the prompt for a discussion is an opening post like the one we have here, which isn't exactly witty, even if that might have been the author's intention. Unknown recently decided to chime in with the complaint that some (lesser) female writers find solace in their gender—which, I suppose, is just a slightly more "sophisticated" version of the same kind of provocation.

It's because the developers of this app are from English-speaking countries where gender doesn't change how you write things, unlike here in America. It's the same reason why other parts of the app aren't properly adjusted for American grammar, specifically regarding cases and plurals. 😉

BTW, I don't consider my gender to be private information. It makes zero sense to hide it. When someone sees me out on the street, they know immediately. I don't need to go out of my way to point it out.

I still don't see how this makes sense:
- gender on profile: YES; gender on posts: NO -> fine
- gender on profile: YES; gender on posts: YES -> bad
🤷

Now, I can actually see the logic behind this:
- gender on profile: YES; gender on posts: NO -> okay
- gender on profile: YES; gender on posts: YES -> better

But whatever. I don't have the energy to argue over trivialities. Everyone has made their point. We can just agree to disagree. 😉

Lisa Hernandez3 said:It’s certainly not a crime—though I suppose it isn't strictly necessary either. If I were to address you as a woman right now, what specific injury would you actually suffer from that mistake?

I've mentioned before that I don't really react when these kinds of errors are directed at me. Honestly, the only ones who seem bothered are the younger crowd, especially women, who tend to take offense and turn threads into off-topic discussions about getting to know one another. For everyone else, it's pretty much irrelevant—if someone gets confused, they'll see the gendered tone of the conversation and just correct themselves.

Besides, that sort of thing doesn't really fit the spirit of communicating on an online forum. The whole concept of identity on the internet is arguably too complex for such a small technical gesture to be seen as anything more than a way to signal flirtatiousness. In reality, it's just prioritizing practicality over complexity (there was a witty post once about the nuance of gender identity, but I think it was deleted—probably dismissed as off-topic trolling, since with these types of questions, technology usually exists to bypass any "philosophy").

Would clearer labels mean we have to pay closer attention to who is who? Maybe. Perhaps those who focus more on the content than the author might find themselves getting tripped up.

Sure, but that info is already available on the profile. Nobody should be looking any harder than they already are. Personally, I check the profile if I'm unsure. It’s quite a hassle when the site starts lagging—which happens almost constantly.

So, your logic is basically this:
- Gender on profile: YES; gender on posts: NO -> fine
- Gender on profile: YES; gender on posts: YES -> bad

That makes zero sense. I might understand if you were arguing to remove gender from both the profile and the posts entirely. But if it's listed on the profile, there is absolutely no reason why it shouldn't show up on the posts too.

William Green4 said:Fine, then give me some actual examples, since you’re making such big threats...

If you had actually followed this thread from the start, you would have seen at least two examples already. I'll say them again:

Let’s look at it this way. First, there is no foolproof way to figure out someone's gender, nor is it necessary. Anyone who chooses to reveal their gender is doing so voluntarily. And people will address them accordingly, whether they are lying or not.

Second, gender settings already exist within the forum software itself.

Third, we are just talking about having the gender listed next to the name, just like the location is. Give me one good reason why you wouldn't list your gender right next to your name. Obviously, I am referring to those who voluntarily added their gender to their profile.

Fourth, just because it doesn't happen to you doesn't mean it never happens to anyone else. It happens.

Fifth, of course, this isn't some critical feature without which the forum would collapse. But it is something that would ease communication in certain situations by removing misunderstandings. To be fair, these misunderstandings aren't catastrophic. But if they can be eliminated, why not? Again, give me one solid reason why this wouldn't be a good idea. Or better yet... give me one good reason why it would be bad.

Btw, a silly example of a conversation:
- "HELP!!!!! My computer slowed down, what should I do???"
- "Did you run a scan? You might have some malware on there."
- "No, what do I need to do??? I AM A WOMAN!!!"
I honestly can't believe I have to list examples of conversations where knowing the speaker's gender is actually helpful. 🙄

Jacob Foster11 said:How can there be "no need" if misunderstandings keep happening? If people are getting confused, then there is absolutely a need for them. If misunderstandings didn't exist, then maybe they wouldn't be needed.

Here is a perfect example of a misunderstanding from a few days ago:

William Green4 said:I honestly don't see where you're coming from... If there's just a linguistic difference between genders, what exactly is the issue?
I assume you're reading other people's posts with enough comprehension that you don't need a manual just to figure out if someone is male or female.
And apparently, clicking on a profile is just too much to ask, isn't it?

It isn't always obvious. Especially if the conversation is short and you don't know the person. I shouldn't have to list examples for you.

What is the goal of all this—to spice up the forum, to have people identify themselves, or whatever else comes to mind...
The community is perfectly fine just the way it is.....

Haaaaaaaaaloooooooooooooo.

Jacob Foster11 said:Good grief...

Gender is necessary because there are linguistic differences between genders.

Besides, nobody is forcing you to list your gender or even provide an accurate one. It’s simply a desire for what is already in your profile to also appear alongside your posts.

William Green4 said:When we talk about general etiquette, it covers much more ground than just gender markers. For instance, you can usually tell from the context of a post whether someone is a man or a woman....
And since birth years aren't visible, there's no reason every single user should feel forced to list them.
If you're going to argue that logic, why stop there? Why shouldn't we require Social Security numbers?
The real issue is that as our ideas evolve, how long would it take for some self-proclaimed genius to decide we need to collect even more personal data?
Adding gender labels isn't going to make this forum any better, that's for sure.....
