Well, that all depends on what kind of bands you're talking about.
If you're talking about rock, you're wrong. History shows that rock resurfaces every few years and finds its footing as a major genre. For instance, it was king in the 70s, dipped off in the 80s, then had that massive explosion in the 90s... and so on.
If you're talking about metal, you're wrong again. Metal is more of a constant. There have always been people who love it, and there always will be, regardless of whatever trend is currently passing through. That isn't really the case with rap. I'm not saying nobody genuinely loves rap, but most people just listen to it because it's what everyone else is doing right now.
If you mean punk, you aren't just wrong—you're spot on. It's true that the golden age of punk is long gone. Punk isn't dead by accident, either. It probably won't ever reach the mainstream heights it saw during the era of The Clash or the Sex Pistols, but there will always be a crowd listening to it.
