Lisa Davis46 said:Man, you caught me off guard—but I actually dig this stuff you posted from that The Weeknd guy. Your take made me want to go digging through what people call "modern pop" from the last decade just to see what's up. Honestly, I'm totally out of the loop with that scene... but man, let me tell you, I decided to finally dive into Lana Del Rey today, and she is incredible. She isn't just some plastic American queen of disasters, failed romances, and drama; to me, it all sounds like she emerged from this murky, foggy, super atmospheric, almost Lynchian world:

blue jeans

I'm diving into albums all day now. 😁

Obviously it's good—did you really doubt me?😁

I wouldn't even put Lana Del Rey in the same league as the artists I'm talking about. Props to the kids listening to her, though I'm worried it won't lead them to deeper stuff like Joni Mitchell or Joan Baez.

Anyone else into these pros?

I fell in love with them through some compilation back when I was 14, after hearing them on my old man's cassette in The Beatles - Yesterday and in Antonioniev's masterpiece Blow-Up, where Jeff Beck absolutely shreds his guitar.

Edit — if you haven't listened much, I was often forced to listen at work, so check out this pile of soulless nobodies for example. A textbook case of what I mean—zero melody, zero arrangement, zero energy.

I was talking more about the actual texture of the sound—it’s probably a digital thing, but honestly, you just can't quite replicate that specific reverb effect perfectly.

The guy definitely knew how to pull off killer stuff, but let's be real—hardly anyone would believe the album wasn't recorded back in 2005.

Mark Cruz15 said:Her vocals are weak—I definitely prefer Slavica Beatles' version.

Dajana has more of a punk vibe—basically, Dajana is The Rolling Stones, while Slavica Beatles is more like The Beatles.

OT: I'd love if someone could actually capture this kind of sound, but honestly, it feels impossible—modern gear just can't replicate this.

Lisa Davis46 said:man, don't start—what even are these techno singers? I mean, the music video is fine,
but my ears, throat, and nose actually hurt from listening to this—and I'm a serious music guy.

I honestly don't care about that modern pop sound when the production is clean. My issue is that these people just can't write a decent melody to save their lives—there's zero arrangement or flavor. We haven't seen this much pure songwriting incompetence since the absolute worst depths of the 80s. If someone told me back in 2010 that ten years later Hall and Oates and Madonna would look like absolute geniuses compared to the garbage ruling the charts today, I would've told them to go jump in a lake.

Seriously, sometimes I feel like AI is already running the show in songwriting and the masses are just hypnotized by it—because there is no way you can push this much melodic, production, and lyrical genericness on us for an entire decade.

OT: here are some really good songs, catchy enough that even the 80s nostalgia doesn't bother me.

Hold up—didn't I already drop the link to this masterpiece? Whatever—even if we post it once a day, it's still worth it.

OT: This is exactly why I love Kozeleka. One minute he’s telling his bandmates to get lost, and the next he’s recording one of the most beautiful songs ever written about a pet.

Those damn Southerners—man, they can be such jerks. You go there and they charge you for breathing, then act like you're bothering them.
Meanwhile, if you're out in the Midwest or somewhere else, for the same money they're so helpful it’s almost ridiculous.

not really...
the city was absolutely packed yesterday with people looking gorgeous,
just totally carefree—like the whole pandemic thing never even happened...

check out Saint and Johnny, sleep walk , ∞ , or honestly just the whole album .

At first glance, I thought he was linking some rap track based on the image. 😁

And there was no pandemic, nor will there ever be. COVID was actually just:

How can anyone trash one of the greatest songs from the 60s like this?

It's a disaster—this guy is just an immoral hack, right up there with those disgusting losers getting paid seven-figure sums to DJ at Hamptons beaches for some hypnotized, mindless crowd.

Interesting—that’s actually right when that massive, exhausting 80s revival kicked off, lasting a good decade and basically feeding straight into the post-punk revival of the early 2000s. Honestly, the worst part was how they mostly hit all the genres I can't stand—just watered-down synth-pop and commercial R&B—trying to repackage them for modern crowds using an "indie" lens while dodging the actual good stuff like hardcore punk, golden age hip-hop, jangle-pop, college rock, or even the Paisley Underground. In my opinion, most of what came out was mediocre at best, with maybe a few outliers here and there.

Just reading that Chromatics—one of the warmer, more cohesive acts out there—finally broke up. To honor them, check out the killer Kill For Love.

The indie scene here in the States is honestly blowing up with female singer-songwriters—some digging into their own lives, others tackling those classic "guy" topics.

That whole thing was seriously gross to read.

And this thread isn't dead—the mods are basically on vacation right now and won't be back until Labor Day. I've already got my proposal ready.

I'm also pretty stoked for September. This guy is solid—and get this—I just realized he's not just a total knockout, he's actually a great drinker, too.

analogbear40 said:The music section of this forum—sadly—died out a long time ago.

All the attempts to bring it back—no matter how much effort went into them—just didn't work.

I still look back fondly at that stretch about 10 years ago when a huge crowd of us would get together every single week for the "listen and choose" series... where Dila would go deep into the 80s era (with a little help from the rest of us)... week after week... and honestly... if you actually dig through those threads, you realize there’s pretty much nothing left that hasn't been covered over all those years.

Analogbear, there's one thing I've wanted to ask you for years, but I was worried it might offend you. The question is—is there anything you actually listen to that was released between 1980 and 1989?😁

Or, if we're being mathematically precise here—from 1981 to 1990?

Gerald Jackson48 said:To be fair, the topic started off really lively with the first album of the week, but things didn't start getting heated until much later on.

That wasn't hostility—it was affection. Just some lighthearted ribbing between two hypersensitive, old-school romantics whose heyday passed a long time ago. 😁

Casey Flores said:Suburbia was a member who was a total joy to read—eloquent yet concise, never rambling, yet somehow packing so much punch into such short posts. This whole place definitely lost its spark when he left...

And we can't forget the old soul. Regardless of what anyone thought, the guy had impeccable taste and an ear for music that was totally untainted by critical bias or cultural baggage. More importantly, he knew how to prove it. It was tough to argue with him when he’d claim the Smiths and Smashing Pumpkins were basically just theatrical noise, or that most musicians are just a bunch of failed poets who couldn't hit five decent notes if you held a gun to their heads.

So, where's Dila now?

Lisa Davis46 said:guys, just as a little tribute—and a bit late—I actually listened to some Belgrade pop stuff yesterday! Honestly, I love the movie, even though it used to bug me because the songs felt like, you know, half-baked little jingles. But my dad loved listening to them, both before and after the war, so I grew to love certain albums and tracks too. 🙂

Lately, I’ve just been nodding along to Stubljić—we cross paths all the time while he’s wandering the wild coasts of California, decked out head-to-toe with that bandana on his head. He's a sweet guy, even if he seems a little eccentric (and crazy).

So then, NP:

modern girl 🐔🐔

As far as the faculty goes, it's not some academic project—it's a total (and urgent) post-disaster reconstruction. Modern girls wake up at six in the morning in August. Modern girls are recording the first two colleges that will be renovated (soon), the first being Political Science! (Xavi and Inconnu 👋). Modern girls are filming and sketching everything needed, above and below ground, from covers to manholes. But honestly, you're better off living in ignorance and having no clue what's hiding under the streets of New York, especially in the summer.

And, fittingly:

take me away from this city

😁

Okay, I'll just say in bold that we all have the right to freak out against the system once in a while. Personally, I'm always the first one to go off the rails.😁

Don't tell me you're walking around in that leather jacket when it's 100 degrees out...🤦

And they aren't "half-baked"—Film released two CDs full of absolute classics, mostly from the mid-80s. Here's probably the coolest thing from the New York New Wave era:

Props to you for the renovation of FDP (even though I didn't attend, it's basically my school since I spent a tiny bit of time on the air at Student Radio), and as for the NYC underground, I've been suffering for ten days straight because I have to deal with a cockroach invasion right in front of my building. Standard stuff from the grocery store doesn't work, I don't exactly enjoy killing things, the old lady in my building is complaining, and the manager couldn't care less as long as he's collecting rent and chilling out somewhere in central California.

In that spirit—an indie masterpiece:

OT: personally, spending the summer in the city—especially August—makes me want to dive deep into some old childhood nostalgia, and for some reason, one of my favorite soundtracks for that vibe is this classic Paramount Pictures gem:

Anyway, Dennis Hall41, I saw you posting about TV shows over on the movie board... man, I still live for a great series! There’s some decent new stuff out there, though I rarely actually get hooked on anything. Aside from how Chris Isaak always makes me want to revisit Twin Peaks (and Fire Walk with Me), I should probably mention a few others that are just on another level of quality... and this track (from the intro) always hits right when paired with the song above. It totally takes me back to those summer breaks—just waiting up late because there was always some retro summer marathon playing on TV every single night.

I'd definitely watch that again:

woke up this morning

Believe it or not, I haven't seen Twin Peaks, even though I don't think it's really the kind of show I was aiming for when I started getting into this format.

Some of my favorites have to be NYPD Blue, X-Files, Monty Python, or South Park—though honestly, half the episodes in those shows are just okay, nothing special. That’s pretty much all, along with some classic old-school stuff.
