He didn't make a mistake... he just went out there, got dirty, someone passed him, so he immediately went on a rampage to take it back, collided with them, and shoved them off the track just so he could overtake them where there was zero chance of doing it fairly.

Grandpa really went too far there... there are some spots where you just can't overtake, especially if you weren't playing it smart a few turns ago...

He got incredibly lucky; this could have ended way worse.
