I wonder, have you had a chance to take a peek at what the Event Viewer is actually reporting?

I honestly don’t know how my liver is supposed to handle these "coaches" who can only offer lines like "he's tired, you got this."

Meanwhile, the guy in the opposite corner isn't even claiming he's in peak condition—he’s basically saying he could go another twenty rounds at this exact pace! Clark Oskar Piechota looks like such an absolute grinder, so how on earth can you look at a fighter like that and just say "he's tired"?
GPU Buying Guide - (Read first post) in Desktops ·
I’ve been looking into some incremental upgrades for my current rig, mostly because I've noticed things starting to stutter a bit when I try to run Tomb Raider or Ubisoft on ultra settings with my GTX 970 🤔

I'm currently torn between picking up an RX 480 8 GB or a GTX 1060 6 GB, though if I'm being honest, I'm leaning slightly toward the AMD side of things at the moment.

Here is what else is under the hood:
FX8350
8 GB DDR3
GA-990FX-UD3 rev 1.1
Corsair PSU 650W
Running at 1080p

I found the 480 for about $667 online, and I figure I could probably offset part of that cost by selling off my old 970.

G4560 seems to be such a popular choice lately, doesn't it? 🙂
iPhone 6 - Dell printer in Computer Peripherals ·
I don't think you quite caught my drift there. See, the printer is actually accessible to any device within the range of your Wi-Fi signal. On your laptop, you can just go ahead and add a new printer, and it should pop up right away, or you could always just download the necessary software from Dell.
iPhone 6 - Dell printer in Computer Peripherals ·
It really just comes down to how far your Wi-Fi signal can reach, you know? It’s all about whether your printer can pick up the connection from wherever you happen to be sitting when you hit that print button.

The whole process is pretty straightforward, honestly—you just download the Dell app, and then once you're inside your document editor or a reader, you just select print and you're good to go. It’s really as simple as that.

Thread Update:

I finally got my hands on an AMD FX-8350 and an NVIDIA GTX 970 G1 and dropped them into my rig today, and honestly, everything is running absolutely flawlessly, just like I hoped it would. 😬 👋
Robert Rodriguez2 said:Man, just grab an AMD FX-8300 as soon as you can—it's available at Best Buy for $338—pair it with a decent GPU, and you'll be able to play pretty much anything you throw at it. 😳
1 x AMD FX-Series X8 8300 3.3GHz, 16MB, 125W, AM3+, FD8300WMHK
1 x Inno3D NVIDIA GTX 970 4GB DDR5 256 bit

$1307

That sounds great. 😬 I think I'll take some more time to look into the specifics and see how everything fits together, and then maybe I can offset some of the costs by selling off these old parts I have lying around.

Bryan Evans77 said:Personally, I’d vote for the AMD FX-8300 plus a solid cooler—if yours is still doing the job, then even better—because if you can push it up to 4GHz, you'll be flying.

Well, if the air cooler can't handle the heat, I suppose I could just tighten my belt and switch over to liquid cooling and see where that takes me! 😁

Adam Moore3 said:Why on earth would you consider changing the whole platform? Why did that even cross your mind? 😲 You've got a great motherboard that supports the FX series, so why go through the trouble of replacing the entire setup? Like the guys were saying, just getting an AMD FX-8300 and the GPU you already have your eye on should be more than enough. 🙂 I might even suggest looking at an AMD Radeon R9 290; they're sitting at a total steal at Micro Center right now, and since you already have a high-quality power supply, you won't have to worry about the power draw.

I don't know, it's just that I'm surrounded by people who swear by Intel and they seem genuinely thrilled with the performance, whereas I don't really notice much of a difference myself, unless you count the fact that Intel chips might run slightly cooler. 🤷

darkowl72 said:First things first, make sure you update your BIOS unless you've already done it. That AMD FX-8300 needs at least version F9 to work properly...

Actually, I think there might even be an F10 beta out there somewhere.😬

Thanks to everyone for all the helpful advice, I think I'll spend some time browsing what's available online these days, maybe take a look at an AMD FX-8300 paired with an NVIDIA GTX 970, or potentially an AMD Radeon R9 290 (though if I go that route, I'd probably have to aim for the X version because, let's face it, I can be a bit of a hardware snob 😛 ), or perhaps I should just hang tight and see how the prices settle for the 390. 👍
I’m currently running a Cooler Master CNPS10X Perform cooler, and honestly, looking at the exact same CPU bottleneck issue you just mentioned, I think it’s probably time for me to swap out both my processor and my graphics card. My MSI GTX 570 TwinFrozr III is such a little workhorse that it still manages to push through almost everything I throw at it, but it’s really hitting a wall lately because that 1280 MB of VRAM just can't keep up with modern titles anymore. Those two factors—the bottleneck and the limited memory—are pretty much the main reasons why I'd be pulling the trigger on an upgrade.

Personally, I'm leaning more toward an NVIDIA GTX setup 😬 since I'm looking for better performance and a much more efficient power draw.
Hey everyone 🙂 I figured I’d reach out to the whole community here because every time I try to get advice from the "experts" in my immediate circle, I just end up getting a bunch of conflicting opinions.

It looks like it’s finally time for me to upgrade my rig, and since things are a little tight financially right now—nothing catastrophic, mind you, but definitely enough to make me think twice—I’m weighing two different paths.

My current setup consists of an AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE, 8 GB of G-Skill Ripjaws RAM running at 1666 MHz (I think, anyway), an MSI GTX 570 TwinFrozr III, and a Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3, rev 1.1 motherboard.

Option 1 would be to go with an Intel Core i5-4590, a fresh motherboard, and an NVIDIA GTX 970.

Option 2 involves grabbing an AMD FX X8 8350 along with an NVIDIA GTX 970.

As for my power supply, I’m assuming my Corsair 650W 80+ unit should be more than enough to handle the jump. My main goal for this upgrade is simply being able to actually run modern games properly. 😬 Personally,
option 2 seems a bit more appealing to me, mainly because I already have this motherboard and its CPU support, though the one little catch is that it only supports PCI-E 2.0—not that I've seen much online suggesting that's going to be a massive dealbreaker.
For the graphics card, I’ve been looking mostly at the NVIDIA GTX 970 WF3 (or just a standard NVIDIA GTX 970🤷), but I keep stumbling across all sorts of comments regarding issues with those specific cards. As a potential alternative that sits in a similar price bracket, I saw this mentioned in another thread and it caught my eye: AMD Radeon R9 390🤷 (though I'm not entirely sure if I'll ever actually need 8 GB of VRAM if I'm not playing anything in 4K).

Thanks in advance to everyone for any suggestions or advice you can toss my way! 👍

I just wanted to check in and let you all know that I think I’ve finally tracked down what was causing all that trouble. A huge thanks to B.B. King for pointing me toward the right path; I really appreciate the nudge. 🙂

My laptop froze up on me again today, but after I went through the hassle of restarting everything, I took a look at the logs in the Event Viewer and found these entries:

The IPv6 failed to configure IPv6 stack.
The IPv6 was unable to allocate bytes of memory. This may indicate that the system is low on virtual memory, or that the memory manager has encountered an internal error.
The DNS proxy agent was unable to allocate 0 bytes of memory. This may indicate that the system is low on virtual memory, or that the memory manager has encountered an internal error.

After doing a bit of digging on Google to see if anyone else was dealing with this, I stumbled upon a ton of people running into the exact same headaches I was. It turns out the culprit is actually Internet Connection Sharing—you know, the feature I had enabled to share my LAN connection via the Wi-Fi card so my phone could get online. So, I went ahead and disabled the service and turned off the sharing entirely... now we just wait and see if that keeps things stable.

Thanks again to everyone for all the help 🙂

I just wanted to drop a quick note and let you all know that I went ahead and uninstalled that software we were talking about, and honestly, everything seems to be running smoothly now. Even booting up Linux from a USB drive is working without any hiccups, which is a relief. I’m going to keep a close eye on things over the next few days just to make sure the stability holds up, but so far, so good.

Thanks so much to everyone for jumping in with all those suggestions and ideas. 🙂

How massive are we talking? It didn't really strike me as a viable option until I started messing around with the calendar and realized the dates actually align up quite nicely 🙂

I might have stumbled upon another possibility here. It seems like things started acting up right around the time my laptop began sharing its Wi-Fi card for internet access. Once I've had a chance to run a few more tests and see what sticks, I think I’ll just go ahead and uninstall the program entirely before attempting a fresh reinstall.

I’ve already tried swapping out the thermal paste, and I even went ahead and gave everything a good scrub with some rubbing alcohol and a standard eraser 😉

I let 3DMark run for about half an hour now, but so far, it hasn't really shown me anything conclusive. 🙂

EDIT: Well, it looks like 3DMark actually powered through all the stress tests without a single hitch—zero issues found.

William Richardson12 said:Not sure what the deal is, but maybe run a 3DMark stress test if you aren't feeling lazy. Just to make sure the card isn't actually dying...

Thanks for the suggestion, I think I'll give that a shot. 🙂
Sandra Cook60 said:Is it possible the cooling system wasn't cleaned out in time?

Have you reset the CMOS?

Best,

We're going to try the CMOS reset later today, though I usually stay on top of maintenance since I cleaned out the heat pipes and the vents about a month ago; the only thing I haven't done is take everything apart to apply some fresh thermal paste to the CPU.

It’s nothing out of the ordinary, really; there isn't even a single warning popping up, let alone any actual errors or critical failures.

Memtest 5.01 says everything passed with zero errors. I think I'll try loading default BIOS settings and then run a boot-time antivirus scan along with an MBR check. Honestly, I’m running out of extra ideas at this point 🤷
I'm not entirely sure if the issue lies within macOS itself, especially since I ran into the exact same headache when I was using both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7. I'm also still leaning towards thinking it might be some sort of conflict with a specific driver or maybe a buggy codec...
